The countryside of the municipio of Jalostotitlan is
beautiful at this time. I had always gone to this area during the months
of November & December as a child. When I went two years ago in July,
I was astounded at the beauty of the countryside. I even asked my dad who
I accompanied on this trip why he had left such a beautiful area. He
reminded me of the other times of the year where its arid and
dusty.
Since I've never been to "El Rancho Los Portales," which
ranches is it near? My sense of direction is not that
great. I only know individuals who do not live there anymore.
In other words, they immigrated to the US, in the 1950's when my folks
left. I currently have living relatives in the following ranches: La
Estanzuela, La Parada, El Aguila--as far as Jalos. I went to La Parada on
the last trip. They also raise cattle, and grow corn (Las Milpas) for
their cattle.
Las Fiestas de Agosto bring many people back to
Jalos. I recall going many years back. I also recall rain just about
every evening, and beautiful, pleasant, sunny days. I prefer "El
Carnaval" in Feb. Now that's the daddy of 'em all! Bull fights, cock
fights, La Serenata, Las Bandas (although I prefer Mariachi music),
etc.,
I can't wait to see the pictures, and look forward to
hearing more!
Hi Alicia:
Thank you for your offer to help, I think I am
going to need some time to digest the information that I have up to this point.
If I do get stuck, I might take you up on the offer. thank you
again.
I also lived in San Jose! I went to
Elementary, Junior High, and High School there. I used to live on
North 12th St. just a couple of blocks from the school. The
elmentary school used to be on Empire St. between 10th and 11th St.
It was I real heartbreak to go back and find that the school had been
demolished...I went to Roosevelt Jr. High and James Lick High on Alum Rock Ave.
(Jim Plunkett, of football fame, Raider's Quarterback, also went to James Lick
High) By that time, we were living a few blocks East of White
Rd. On Sunday I used to walk all the way from my house to downtown to the
movie theaters on First St. and then walk all the way home. I wasn't old
enough drive...I could have taken a bus, but I enjoyed the walks. Alum
Rock used to be one of my favorite places, until it was taken over by young,
gang members from Oakland.
In 1969 we went back to Santa Clara and then
bought a new 4 bedroom house in the Berryessa Area for $ 28, 000!!! A
year later we sold it and went to Guaymas, Sonora for the next 10 years. I
can just imagine what that house is worth right now $$$
I did not ask about the ownership of the land, so
I have no idea who owns what at "Rancho Los Portales" There are still a
few families living on the ranch and most of them have dairy herds. The
land is pretty arid to grow corn or anything else. Right now the
countryside is pretty green and lush, it is the rainy season...It rained just about every afternoon and evening all the
time we were there.
