Hi Esther, can you tell me who and what dates you have for Portezuelo, Zapotlan del Rey and Sayula? I've found these towns in the records for Tamazula and Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman. I have some records from these town but not the others.
My Gutierrez family maried into the Ornelas family and they lived in the Tamazula area, my Gutierrez and Mendez family also lived in Portezuelo in the late 1800's. My records for Zapotlan El Rey and Sayula are from mostly the mid to late 1700's.
Daniel (Mendez del Camimo), does this Ornelas family belong to your Ornelas family?

I am very excited to be in this genealogy group. I have been reading all your e-mails and I like learning about the history. Thank you! I was born in Jamay, Jalisco and came to the U.S. when I was 6 years old. My history knowledge is not good but it is never too late to learn.
What I know of my great-grandmother: Maria Guadalupe Vaca Velazquez was born 12 DEC 1882 (However, the date may have been changed because she did not want it known that she was older than Great grandpa Lorenzo Gutierrez.) She was born in Portezuelo, Jalisco. She died 11 MAY 1965. My great grandfather's family were from Ocotlan, Jalisco but I am not sure whether he was born in Ocotlan or Portezuelo. A live relative told me that he was born in Portezuelo and I would like to know for sure. They were married in Jamay 26 November 1902. My Great grandpa died March 1939.
His father was Secundino Gutierrez married to Maria Juana Ruiz on 5 SEP 1855 in Zapotlan del Rey, Jalisco. His family were also from there.
Rosendo Vaca married Anastacia Velazquez at Portezuelo, Jalisco. Rosendo was shot and killed before my great grandma was born. Anastacia later remarried with some one named Cerda. I have other details but I am visiting my dauther in Virginia at the present time.
Maria Dolores Davila Diaz was born in Sayula, Jalisco around 1869. Her father was Teofilo Diaz, born 9 JAN 1834, in Sayula. Hw was married 25 SEP 1854. Her mother was Maria Davila. I have her brothers and sisters but again I have the info at home.
I am happy to share whatever information I have.

Dear Esther-
It is hard to keep up with all the emails one receives
when on vacation. I read this one with interest
today.
I do not know where Sayula is because my husband does
not apparently have any ancestors from there. I did
see the information sent to you by Jonathan. Seems
like some of the area you are seeking information
from, is in the same places that I have search in
years past.
On one of our outings, we stopped by La Barca. It was
on a Sunday and in the plaza, people were voting for
local leaders. We went by the church, which is off to
the side and not on the plaza square.
On our way to the Guadalajara airport on Friday, we
passed through Jamay and I can report that Lake
Chapala does have adequate water at this time. I have
visited there in the past when the water level was
quite low.
I have also done research in Ocotlan but never in
Zapotlan del Rey.
Looking forward to getting together with you on your
return to California.

After you sent me the information of my 5th generation grandfather, I found a brother of his. I visited the Genealogy Library in Bonita and with the help from Patricia B. Godinez and some films that are on permanent status from La Barca and Portezuelo I found the info and also found Antonio Lopez' father and mother. Thank you for guiding me to where I am now! I am really excited about this!

I tried accessing your site a couple of times and couldn't get past your home page, can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I did contact you before since I have Rolon ancestors from Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman as does your wife but we never made a family connection.

Dear Researchers--
We just arrived home from a trip to Jalisco, Mexico.
We stayed most of the time in Santa Rita, Ayotlan.
However we did make some day trips out to a few
villages in the Atotonilco el Alto municipio, and to
the town of Capilla de Guadalupe.
In order to reach those places and to go on a better
road, we went the back way from Santa Rita and passed
the village of Portesuelo in the La Barca municipio.
A number of years ago, we went to Portezuelo (it can
be spelled either way in the old records) because some
of our Godinez ancestors lived there.
I was surprised to see that there were so many other
places called Portesuelo in Jalisco. I am glad we can
share information with one another and learn more.

My Grandmother's Background: Carmen Ornelas Born 28 NOV 1900, Guadalajara, Jalisco. Died 7 NOV 1996; Her father was Doroteo Ornelas, Guanajuato; I don't have anything else for him.
Her mother was Rosa Cortez born in Santa Cruz de Astilleros, Jalisco; Carmen had a brother named Heriberto who married Margarita Hernandez, Alfredo who married Soledad Gonzalez and Adela who resided in Chicago for many years. I have other info but not with me at this time.
Rosa had brothers and sisters as follow: Guadalupe, Maria Nestora, Refugio, Baldomero, Savas, Casimira (7 MAR 1867),Maria Merced, 24 SEP 1871. This info was given me verbally by my mother, so I don't know how accurate it might be. Rosa's father was Santos Cortez, Santa Cruz, Jalisco and mother Leocadia Garcia de Leon also from Santa Cruz.
I will try to get info on Secundino Gutierrez from Zapotlan del Rey, Jalisco, I have about 8 brothers/sisters for him but not with me at this time. His father was Antonio Gutierrez and his mother Maria de Jesus Navarro.

Daniel, yes, please send me whatever info you have. This is exciting news for me! Regarding my grandmother Carmen Ornelas... she believed in keeping her origin pure. She disowned my father when he married my mother because she was not in her class.

Wow! Well Jonathan.. I guess finished my job. He did a lot! for you. Anyway, wow! I can relate you
about the class thing. In my ancestry you'll hardly find any other than SPanish or European blood.
I have like 1 black and 2 or 3 indian lines. My mother's family went to the extreme! They cared so much
for "pure blood" that's what they called it. THey married inside their on family. Until this day 2008, we still
do that, I really don't want to marry my cousin! They believed very strange things. All my mom's ancestors
are related until 1750 or so. I find Theodoro García de León about 17 times on my tree! My mother's family owened
an hacienda, i think that's way they only mixed with other land owners. I think it was my grt gf Francisco Méndez
that didnt approve of my gm Cuca because she was mestiza. Her father was spanish (white skin) our family for
some reason dont call people Mexican, we still call them Negro, Mestizo or Spanish or Indio, not sure why. and her
Elena de Moran was also mestiza. My gf came out oliveish color. Im not sure why but when someone marries other
than European blood they make sure their descendants to hide their lineage of other than Euro. I didnt now I was
Black! Lol! My friends tell me "im whiter than a white person" LOL! I think it's fun learning your other lineages especially
