Hello and Thank you for accepting me into this group.
My name is Stephanie Sexton and I am originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am currently researching my Dad's family surname of Angel de Ocana. The first person in this family appears in Santa Fe, New Mexico purchasing property in 1738, then, family in a Church Census in 1750 and marriages for five children in the same city. Information I can deduce from the above records: Francisco Xavier Angel, (born about 1704) spouse: Maria Ramirez (born 1704 to 1710). See this link for the Tree: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/SCSexton
It is thought the families of Angel de Ocana came with settlers from Mexico City or Zacatecas with or after the reentry into Santa Fe, New Mexico of the Spaniards and Diego de Vargas in 1693. I can find no records for parents for Francisco Xavier Angel. He may have had a brother or cousin who gave the name of Marcial Angel de Cana. Francisco Xavier was married to a Maria Ramirez. Santiago Ramirez gives himself as a brother in law to Francisco Xavier and was married to Maria Luisa (Petrona/Petra) Leyva. Marcial was married to Maria de la Candelaria Ramirez, a daughter of Santiago Ramirez about 1750 in Santa Fe, NM. I can find no records for parents for Ramirez or Leyva.
My thought is, perhaps, records or family genealogies for these families exist in Zacatecas or the surrounding areas. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Stephanie
Marcial and Francisco Xavier are most likely close relatives.
José Marcial Ángel de Ocaña has a grandson named Francisco Xavier Angel De Ocana so I believe that you are correct in that they most likely very close relatives. Marcial’s wife, Maria Ramirez passed away on 20 October 1762 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Rick...thank you so much for your comment. If you know anything else or come upon information, I would appreciate the send to me. I will also add, that the Angels were listed as Mulattos & Color Quebrado in the 1790 census. My DNA also shows North African ancestry as well as some from the Middle East and "Jewish". My guess is that the Angels were "Marranos" or "Anusims", maybe from Morocco, Algiers or Tunisia. I see the Angel, Ocana and Ramirez names listed in Inquisition files quite frequently.

New Mexico was considerered a safer place for Anusim to blend in as it was what we in the United States grew up calling “the Wild West.” I descend from Toribio Hernández Arellano who had cousins with the surname Sanchez who were Anusim that settled in New Mexico. I have a Villalpando ancestor that was born in Taos New Mexico because his parents had gone there to visit relatives. After his birth the family returned to Jalostotitlan, Jalisco. My Robledo ancestors moved from New Mexico to Los Altos De Villa Nueva, Nueva Galicia.( modern day “Los Altos De. Jalisco”).
I did much research of New Mexico ancestries when I researched the ancestral family tree of NFL quarterback Jim Plunkett. This past year I did some more research on New Mexico ancestries when I worked on my cousin’s husband’s ancestry. Work on his family tree was easy because he had many ancestors in common with Jim Plunkett.
Marcial Ángel de Ocana and María Ramirez are the parents of Juan Lorenzo Angel De Ocana.
Juan Lorenzo Ángel de Ocana and María Antonia Jimenez are the parents Francisco Xavier Eugenio Angel De Ocana.
Santiago Ramirez and Maria Petronila De Leiba are the parents of Vicenta María Ramirez.

Lorenzo Angel
I will add that Lorenzo Angel was the son of (Francisco)Xavier and Maria Ramirez. Lorenzo is not listed in the 1750 census of Santa Fe, but his wife and child are in the home of Xavier and Maria Ramires. There are 4 other children associated with them: Maria Ynes, Gregorio, Maria Juana Caterina and Miguel.

Further proof of (Francisco) Xavier Angel exists in a 1738 Land sale where Santiago Ramires gives himself as the "Cunado" or brother-in-law to Francisco Xavier Angel. (I can send you the file...to large for here)
Marcial Xavier appears in the same 1750 Census in the house of Santiago Ramires and Petra Luisa. Marcial was married to Santiago and Petrona's daughter, Maria de la Candelaria Ramires.

Frank Duran fedjr67@gmail.com
My research will start by centering in the Cienega de Mata and Ojuelos de
Jalisco area and probably Aguascalientes as well looking for Durán and
Muñoz surnames. I'm still new to this, before finding "Nuestros Ranchos," I
recently began my search after finding a written copy of my grandfather's
birth record dated July 1877, at "Hacienda Cienega de Mata. Recently found
grandfather's parents marriage cert. from May 1868, Ledesma Ojuelos de
Jalisco on My Heritage site. Can't find much else on the area thus far,
don't want to encroach on anyone's research in this area of Jalisco, can
anyone point me where/which direction to go from here?
Thanks, Frank
Introduction
Frank,
Cienega de Mata and Ojuelos are close to Aguascalientes. You may want to look there. Also if you tell us who you're looking for, we may already have them researched.
