Actually, I found five individuals whom I believe are siblings for Yolanda's grandmother, Maria Ruano. There may be more, but the IGI database for Nochistlan only goes up to 1875. Unless the microfilms for the years after 1875 are indexed, it will necessitate going through them entry by entry to find any others.

ok Yolanda, Deena and Alicia and others have opened some very very big
holes in your Brick Wall. . .even if there are indexes to those films
you need to go through each frame by frame and hunt for the relatives.
Don't just look for your straight line relatives but look for the
branches as well. In fact looking for the branches is what gives you
some of your best information and helps get you past some of your future
brick walls.

Order a film and start researching. As you get about 1/3 to 1/2 way
through maybe order your second film. If you find that the film has many
many of your relatives consider putting the film on permanent hold at
your closest and most convenient Family History Center.

Joseph. I'm planning on taking some days offa few days
at the end of the month. just so I can go to the FHC
that is 50 miles away from me. I go to college at
night, four nights a week. The only day I have free in
the evening they are closed. I can't way to go there.

I do have a question I was going to ask Deena or
Alicia. I'll just ask you. When you go to the FHC
what do you take with you. I will be taking the
information on the films that everyone have sent me.
But what else do I need to take. Since this is the
first time that I will be going I want to make sure
that I have every thing I need. I'm like a little kid
at Christmas time I just can't wait.

This is what I ideally take over to the FHC. I assume that since you have never been there, you do not yet have any films waiting to be read. As such, you will likely just need the film numbers and their descriptions so that you can fill out the order cards. Of course you will need $5.50 in cash per film to pay for the order/loan.

They may have other materials that you can peruse while you are there but most likely they will have nothing too specific.

What may be useful is to have one of the volunteers there show you how to use the IGI and VRI. They usually have a PC version and of course you can use the online version at familysearch.org from their computers as well. I find the latter much more user friendly.

Once you have received films, these are some items that I have found to be useful on my trips to the FHC:

- A notebook to write down notes from a film or transcribe entries from the film.

- A couple of pens and a pencil.

- A printout of the ancestry data you have that includes specific dates and places.

- A USB drive to carry your PAF/GEDCOM and search/update it at the center as you read a film. This is also VERY useful if your center has a digital film reader that allows scanning to a PC. You can then take "snapshots" of the film entries for FREE and they are much better quality than the photocopier style film printer ones.

Excuse my ignorance but I must ask anyway. What is this USB Drive that you talk about, it sure sounds like something very useful and what is the cost and is it any USB Drive? Is it something easy to use for a computer ingnoramus like me.

Now onto your suggestions for things to take with you, if you are making copies at your FHC, I have and use a 6 digit stamper that stamps the film # on every copy I make. When taking a pen I take a colored pen usually red in case I have to write any comments or notes on the copy, red stands out and is easier to read. I also take highlighter pens as some copies have multiple records on them, I highlight the record that is of interest to me. I also carry one or two magnifying lenses as some films or records are very difficult to read.

When reading the film, I keep a notebook for Genealogy only and record the film #, whether it's for baptisms, marriage, census or other. It usually takes me several trips to view the entire film, each time I go I write down what page numbers I have read and I record the last page I viewed EXAMPLE Pages 1-122., last page viewed 122, matrimonio de Refugio Duran con Maria de Jesus Sigala, 2 Sept 1842. This saves me from having to go through the same pages a second time, I record the names and the date because some films have many years of records and each year will begin again at page 1.
I also record what films I have ordered and when. When new films arrive, I record the date they arrived. When I re-order I record the dates of the first extension or the last extension. I began to do this because I was being charged twice for the extension of the same films. The lady at the FHC did not do this intentionally she did it because she would get confused as I was ordering and extending too many films and she didn't appear to have a good method for tracking it.

You can see what a USB drive looks like here. It is basically a pretty small solid state (no moving parts) memory card that plugs into a USB port of any computer and works just like another hard drive, so you can save and load files from it. They come up to about 4GB (expensive) but you can get some for 64 MB that are pretty inexpensive. The film scans usually take up 2 MB so even a 64 MB one will fit a dozens of them plus your PAF file.

The one listed here is 256MB and costs $20.

I have two USB Drive they are 512MB. I was going to
use them to do my school work on. But for some reason
I alway seem to erase the information that I put on
them. So I erase my homework. Plus I was putting my
Daycare information on there to. And I did the same
thing ERASE. I'm going to have to get someone to show
me what I'm doing wrong. That would be great if I
could learn how to work with it.

name. My greatgrand mother on my father side is a
Ramos. But not from the region for this site. If you

When you unplug your USB Drive you must always make sure to first go to the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" Screen. There should be a little light on the USB Drive. You should never unplug the device when the light is on. If you go to the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" Screen. This will shut down the drive which at some point will turn the light off. When the light is off then it is 'Safe' to unplug the USB Drive. If you unplug it when the light is on, it will sometimes erase the drive. It is also 'Save' to unplug the USB Drive when the computer is turned off.

Call them before you go. Ask them if there is any way you can order a
film before going there. If you go those films won't be there until you
order them. Maybe just maybe they will let you mail them the money and
order a film or two. After the films arrive say in about 3-5 weeks then
they will call you to tell you they are in. If they don't allow you to
order other than in person then your first trip there will be only an
educational one to learn how to use the center. You can go and order
your film and then get a tour of the facility. Also you'll be able to
use the computers there and use their free access to Ancestry.com which
at least lets you look at the US Census records.

But later after you order your first film and it arrives you'll need a
note book and pen/pencil. Also you will need to have good reading
glasses if you need them. They should be able to get you started on how
to load the film on the readers and should have a way you can make a
copy of the those records of your family on the particular film you borrow.

Also be prepared for some records that might be difficult to read. You
never know but they might be easy and they might be hard. You need to be
ready in your mind for all possibilities. I remember the very first film
I looked at. . .I just couldn't believe it, my heart just dropped to the
bottom of my chest I was so disappointed because i though it was a
terrible mess to look at. Not because it was in Spanish but becuase the
handwritting was bad and the ink was smeared and the ink was to light or
to dark BUT then I later learned that those first films were some of the
best films I had. Boy was I glad that I got used to reading them real
quick and found that they were easier and easier with more time looking
at them. Don't be surprised just be ready for a film that might be a
challenge, but don't give up as the rewards are great.

I'm going to upload a few different scans of films just to give you an
idea of what some of the possiblities are. I'll put some good ones and
some bad ones you look and get your mind to accept whatever comes your
way, because on those films good or bad are your people and you have to
accept that.

I have broken a brick wall on my Saldivars, thanks to the information
that Ed Serros posted at our Research files. Now I know who my Josef
Saldivar's parents (late 1600s, early 1700s city of Zacatecas) are AND
that Josef is definitely the brother of the Pablo Saldivar who is shown
as the padrino to his son Juan Saldivar from Jerez!!!! I had suspected
for years that this was the case but now I have the proof!
