I just received a message from the manager of Indexing Operations of FamilySearchIndexing in Salt Lake City and he has informed me that they have Mexico projects on their docket for the online indexing project they have started.
I have asked him for more information and will try to keep abreast of when the projects go online and notify the group. I know that there are several members that have already done some indexing, but for those who have not and think this might be a worthwhile project for which to volunteer, please go to:
htttp://www.familysearchindexing.com
You can download the software and try indexing some census pages to give the system a trial run in preparation for the Mexico project. It would be great if we as a group could make a significant contribution to a project like this.
Esparza Y Chavez
I have the following limited information regarding these two names. My grandfather, Manuel Chavez (DOB 2 June 1904)is the son of Enrique Chavez and Genobeba Romero. Enrique's parents are Jacinto Chavez and Guadalupe Ruiz Esparza. All I have for Guadalupe is Father Ruiz and Mother Esparza. Enrique was born in 1868 and died in 1960. He lived and was laid to rest in Gomez Palacios which is in Durango. I have a photo of Guadalupe with her son Enrique.
Zacatecas is close to Durango, but it may be a stretch.

Arturo,
Is it a requirement that you be an LDS member? If it is, this would most likely exclude many of us.

No it is not necessary to be an LDS member to participate in the online indexing projects. As with the family history library resources, they are open to the general public.
I have done a few census pages myself just to try out the system and one of the main reasons why they have been pushing the digitization of films and the online indexing technologies is so that they can expand the base of volunteers that they use for extraction.
Everyone, if you have not yet tried out the indexing software, I encourage you to do so. It is pretty nifty.

Arturo,
Just how do you join/do the online indexing for LDS. It sounds very interesting and I would like to know more about it.Thanks!!!!!!!!

For Juanita and anyone else who wants to get involved in the online indexing project, I strongly encourage you to do so.
All that is required is a PC (they do not support Mac at this point) and a DSL or Cable internet connection (the image scans are large files that will take too long to download via a modem).
You can then go to http://www.familysearchindexing.com
and download the software, register for an account as a volunteer and as soon as your application is approved (very quick) you can begin downloading scans to index. It would be very helpful if members of the group got familiar with the online indexing software and system before the Mexico projects come up so that we have a group ready to go when they do come up.
I have done U.S. Census pages from New York and Ohio and it is pretty straight forward.
FamilySearchIndexing.com
Arturo,
I applied for the family search indexing and today I received my username and password, next I will download the software and I'll tell you how it goes............I know i'm crazy for adding one more thing to my already very busy as in overloaded schedule.

Not long ago I registered with Nuestros Ranchos; I am trying to find
information on Esparza & Chavez from Zacatecas. However, I have no idea how
to even begin using this site or what this family search indexing is...
Thanks

Mary, I was hoping I could help you but it's a different part of Zacatecas than I work on.. maybe someone else is working on Chalchihuites, by the way, where is that? What's the closest large town? Have you checked the members files to see who's working this area?

Mary, I just checked the Internationl Genealogy Index (IGI) on Familysearch and since your gr-grandparents marriage is listed with a film number is there a history center near your home for you to order the film from? That would give you their parents and information you don't already have. If you haven't used the center before they are very helpful and always glad to help a newcommer.

Esparza and Chavez in Zacatecas Mexico
Mary,
I am a new-comer to the group. At first I was just lost, seeing all these messages between these very smart and savvy people. They talked about things I had no idea of, but I am learning from all of them. And it is not a bore reading through them, but a pleasure because you see how much dedication is put into all these searches. Just don't give up.
I am researching in Zacatecas, also. I have a Chavez in the family, so who knows we may each be able to contribute to one another.

Family Search Indexing Projects
For the DNA experts out there:
I am very much interested in getting my DNA. I have a question. Recently, my great-granddaughter got DNA testing for a paternity issue. Is that information valuable, not valuable, etc. for genealogy purposes?
Also, where would I get the test?
Thanks for any information. Juanita

Chalchihuites and DNA Tests
Mary and Juanita:
It is great to have you in the group and whenever you feel lost please, please ask questions... For anyone new to the group, I suggest you download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide (Files - Reference Materials). While it is still not yet complete, it will give you a good starting point.
Mary, as Linda mentioned, your great-great grandparents are listed in the IGI and that means that you can easily order the film where their marriage is recorded and find out where they were born and what their parents' names were. Just go to the nearest family history center and order Film 0605005.
There are also some Chalchihuites films listed in our Films section:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/films/Zacatecas/2007
CRUS ESPARSA
Marriages:
Spouse: MA. DE JESUS CHAVES Family
Marriage: 01 JUN 1883 San Pedro, Chalchihuites, Zacatecas, Mexico
Batch No.: M601021 Film No. 0605005
FYI Chalchihuites is named after the ruins of what is believed to be a Toltec settlement... probably a trading post for the trade routes to what is now the American Southwest. That is definitive proof that Mesoamerican civilization reached as far north as Zacatecas at some point.
Juanita:
As far as DNA tests, the ones that are valuable for genealogical purposes are Y-DNA and MtDNA tests. That is because these parts of the DNA fingerprint are immutable from generation to generation except for mutations, i.e. offspring have the same Y-DNA as their father and the same MtDNA as their mother instead of half of each as is the case with most of the DNA fingerprint.
I am not sure what they test in a paternity test for a female child as females do not get the Y chromosome from their fathers and thus cannot have a Y-DNA test done.
If your great granddaughter is your descendant through your daughter's daughter she would have the same MtDNA as you and your mother and your mother's mother. MtDNA mutates much more slowly that Y-DNA.
I would recommend getting the test done with Family Tree DNA either directly or through the Human Genographic project:
