So after a long grace period away from this, I decided to run a search and see what comes up and I found 2 things of promise. Problem is, they are very vague mentions in the posts that came up.

Does anyone know much of the surname Llanos Y Valdez(also spelt Llanos Y Valdes) and its connection to the surname Rivas? If there is information on the family itself in terms of a history, thats what I'd prefer to know. It was mentioned they are "old families", so, I'm guessing there is a lot behind these.

I don't recognize your online name, who are you? If you submitted a genealogy file I'd like to  read it since I track Tovar/Tobar from Jerez.
 
I do have one entry from Jerez Zacatecas Mexico, not sure if it's the area or time frame you are looking for:

I am Cole. My family history comes up if you search
"Rivas/Salas/Flores/Llanos Y Valdez"...I included the whole family up til my
grandmother's generation(as she is the oldest living link). Our family
supposedly had a rancho by Val Paraiso, but, nothing really has come up for
that...I do know that my Llanos y Valdez were very wealthy though...

The Llanos y Valdes in the Jerez area are descendant from a certain Juan Jose Llanos y Valdes who was a captain in the Spanish army, son of Spanish immigrants born in Michoacan around 1652. Note that the name is composed, i.e. it is not that one parent was named Llanos and the other Valdes. The two have been used in a composed manner since the immigration of the first Llanos y Valdes to Michoacan in the early 1600s.

Juan Jose Llanos y Valdes married the daughter of a matrimony of two of the most prominent and wealthy Jerez Spanish families, the Carlos de Godoy and Carrillo D'Avila.

His descendants largely go by simply the name Valdes these days as after the independence "composed" Spanish surnames like Llanos y Valdes were out of fashion. They are very wealthy landowners throughout the Jerez region. Much of the land in the town where my father was born, Villa Guerrero, is owned by Llanos y Valdes.

You will have to trace your ancestor back to one of the documented branches. Have you searched through Jerez records to try to find a connection. If your ancestor is indeed a descendant of this family, the connection will be found there since that is the nucleus and one of the older towns in the region... certainly where older records from Valparaiso are likely to be.

How do I find these records or research this potential connection? I'm a
university student, and living in California(San Diego), so my access to
records in Mexico is not exactly very good. If my finances were better, I'd
probably cheat a little bit and do a mtDNA test to determine potential
matches who might have a better idea of family history(and also get some
perspective on long term migratory patterns), but I'm not able to afford the
$125 pricetag that the weakest of the tests runs at :(

That said, I've noticed your family comes up in connection to this larger
family as well. Do you have a comprehensive history of the Llanos y Valdes
family of the area?? It'd make for an interesting contrast between where we
were and the hardship that we went through after Aurelio Rivas passed away
and couldn't fund Jesus Rivas' education as an engineer anymore, which
ultimately led to the family crossing to the States.

I am descendant from the Llanos y Valdes through one of my paternal great-grandfathers, Juan Gutierrez Jara. As far as searching through Mexican baptism and marriage records, it is quite easy to do through an LDS family history center in San Diego.

You should start from people you know and go backwards, i.e. start in Valparaiso until you get to the end of those records and then start looking in older parrishes of the region, i.e. Mezquitic, Tlaltenango, Jerez:

Filmed chuch records in Valparaiso go back to 1831 (for baptisms) and 1864 (for marriages). I don't think any are indexed and thus they are not searchable online, but if you know the approximate date of birth of your grandparents or great grandparents, you should be able to find their baptism certificate which will then list their parents and grandparents names...

Her parents were: Jose atanacio Laureano Ureña abt 1770 and Ma. Narcisa BIscarra; the grand-parents were: Jose Juna UREÑA and Maria Luisa ABILA (both abt 1750).

What is interestin is the fact that there is a place called "Rancho de los Ureña" which means it belongs to this family. Hope the person who has this family lines get in contact with me and see if we have a posible connection.

grandfather Vidaure. Her first husband was named Pedro. They were both from
Jerez, Zacatecas. Any possibility that you are related to this branch?

Is the Rancho you mentioned in Jalisco?

I was able to find her baptismal certificate; although, the priest had the
parents and grandparents names totally screwed up. My nana's parents were
Crescencio CEBALLOS and Rosita ORTIZ.

She was married to Pedro URENA, but I don't know where or when.

I too am descended from this couple, as are Sally and Hector, two other members of Ranchos. I got help from them and also from a man in Mexico named Salvador Cabral. I will send you that family tree to your e-mail address as an attachment later. I haven't figured out how to upload it to WorldConnect or to the files here yet. I can't concentrate lately. My husband had surgery for his prostate cancer, and I am busy being his nurse and doing some chores he used to do.

I received Emilie's tree(thanks Emilie!) and went through it. I don't have
any names or dates that match though :( It would seem that my farthest link
that I have a name for would be in her 8th or 9th generation listed. The
problem is, I don't know anything about those individuals except names and
dates and where they're from, so, I can't discern if they're truly related
and are unlisted siblings. Theres the additional issue of name-matching; by
that generation, hers are no longer "Llanos Y Valdes" by name...whereas mine
retained it up until the marriage with the Rivas family.
