I know this has been addressed before, but I can't find the solution in the records. Please, what do I do to remove the "?" from the words in the emails? I use a Mac computer and I've looked all over my preferences for the solution. If you will please tell me where to find the directions for eliminating the "?'s" it will make my life easier, and my translations much clearer, even though they are quite comical at times.
Thank you for revisiting this problem and helping me find the solution.

Help with the "?" in the emails
If you are talking about the Spanish characters being replaced by ? then it
might be a setting in the email program that needs to be changed. I couldn't
fix it that way so I started to use gmail (Google email www.gmail.com)
which doesn't have that problem. It's ridiculous how one of the most widely
spoken languages in the world and the U.S. isn't supported by default by
email programs.

Character incompatibility in emails
The problem some of us (mostly mac users) are seeing with ? in emails instead of accents and other marks is that UTF-8 (or UTF-16) text encoding is not selected by an email sender using an older Windows version, for which the default encoding is ISO 8859-1, an older text encoding scheme which is not fully compatible with other systems.
For maximum compatibility and fewer such issues, set your email (and website) text encoding to UTF-8, which will make things easier and more compatible for all of us. [In Mac OS X Mail, the last item under the Message menu lets you set text encoding: pick Unicode (UTF-8).]
So, for users who encounter messages in which ? appears instead of accents (á, é, í, ó, ú, Ā, É, Í, Ó, Ú) and other typographical marks (ç, ñ, ü, Ç, Ñ, Ü, ¡, ¿ ), I suggest copying the message from the Nuestros Ranchos website and pasting it onto your system. All the special characters should work fine. You can use the list above as a test case.
For more details, WikIpedia has articles on text encoding and the various ways it's done. Here's an excerpt from the UTF-8 article: " ... UTF-8 has become the dominant character encoding for the World-Wide Web, accounting for more than half of all Web pages.[2][3][4] The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) requires all Internet protocols to identify the encoding used for character data, and the supported character encodings must include UTF-8.[5] The Internet Mail Consortium (IMC) recommends that all e‑mail programs be able to display and create mail using UTF-8."

Character incompatibility in emails
Hello Bert,
I am not a Mac user but the Spanish characters would not show up correctly
in my email from Nuestros Ranchos even though they would show up correctly
in all my emails in Spanish to my friends and relatives, I had brought this
to the attention of Joseph Puentes. He had said the same thing, that all I
had to do was change the email to UTF-8, but that didn't solve anything for
me. As soon as I switched my account over to my gmail account the problem
was solved. If the solution is switching to UTF-8 why didn't the emal from
Nuestros Ranchos get corrected when I set the encoding to UTF-8? I still
have one of them and I tried it again and it still didn't correct. If it's
because of the person that sent it why do I never have the problem anymore
with gmail?
Opening a new account with gmail or maybe live.com (hotmail) is a very easy
step as is changing the email account. I have my gmail forwarded to my Yahoo
account so I don't have to use two accounts unless I want to reply in gmail.
So those that don't replay a lot won't need to log into two accounts.
Saludos,
Armando

Getting ? in emails instead of Spanish characters
There's one point I failed to make in my previous post. It is the sender of the message who needs to set text encoding to UTF-8 as well as the recipient. Once the message gets reencoded (with the ?s) as part of the aggregated post and sent via email, it's too late to change it. If the person assembling the combined message notices that it contains ? wherever Spanish accent and typographical marks should be, then he or she can try to change the message's text encoding at that point, which may work some of the time.

Getting ? in emails instead of Spanish characters
Why is it that I never get garbled messages with gmail ? I don't change
anything and neither do the senders and I never have problems with it. We
can't expect all of the senders to change their encoding to UTF-8 even if
Joseph were to send all of the members an email asking them to change the
encoding.

Character incompatibility in emails
Thank you for this forum posting. It was very informative. I went back through my browser and outlook to make sure I had the settings at UTF-8.

Getting ? in emails instead of Spanish characters
Thank's for the added information. That explains why I'm still getting some emails with ? in them.
Though I'm 69, it looks like it will be easier for me to take Spanish language classes than to put up with ?'s and comical online translators.

Character incompatibility in emails
I copied your email from the Ranchos website and emailed it to me. Everything came out alright using UTF-8. So, everything works when I send an email from me to me. Now I'll wait and see if a new email from Nuestros Ranchos or someone else will appear correctly, too.
Thank you for all your help. I hope you have solved this vexing problem for me and other's, too.

Character incompatibility in emails
Thank you so much, Patty. The letters came through fine. I'm so pleased. I appreciate the help you and Armando have given me. I changed my email message text encoding as Armando suggested, then changed the text encoding in Safari under View to UTF-8. I now received your email with the test and it came through without question marks. Hooray! It seems the text coding must be changed in both the web browser and the email program.
Thank you both and everyone else who worked on this problem.
