For clarification, some questions for the group along this same line:
Expuesto y criado en la casa means left at your door
step and raised by the household, but what surname was the child given?
Hijo natural meant the child was born out of wedlock, but the mother kept him and raised the child; was he given the mother's surname?
Padres no conocidos means the child was left at the church's doorstep?  Or "found" and brought in for baptism?  There are often padrinos named in these cases.  Was the child given their surname?

The phrase means: "Raised in the house of", a child the was not a natural born to the family.
