I tire of the right wing screed that is Somos Primos.

But first, let's talk about terrorism. It's not like the Muslims have a
corner on this market. Most terrorism in the USA is by white Christian
males. Shall we talk about the atrocities that our own soldiers have
committed? In the ME, in Vietnam? Here's the legacy of our involvement
in Vietnam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj72E8Xr_xw Look at those
children and tell me we have no blood on our hands.

As Christ himself said, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the
first to throw a stone."

Let's revisit 2000 years of Christian history and come up with examples
of Christians doing horrific things. I'm sure we could fill volumes.

Ridiculous statement "Islamic Inspired Wars"

I believe that Somos Primos is a valuable source of information but it does have a poor choice of words in this issue.

I can see why many people are offended by the statement: "As I view the brutality and devastation caused by Islamic inspired wars" because it implies that the terrorism that is being done is inspired by the Muslim religion when it is fanatics that are not in any sense spiritual that are waging this war. The terrorists are not following The Islamic faith. This statement is the type of statement that would come out of Trump's mouth.

Somos Primos was the first to make a political statement here so people responding to this outrageous statement should not be told to not respond to it. Nuestrosranchos can't expect a post of "Somos Primos" to make such an inappropriate statement and not expect someone to respond.

This is a repeat of when some members made inappropriate comments regarding Jews and then we were told to stop the discussion as it didn't have to do with genealogy. It did have to do with genealogy. I am a descendant of many of the founding settlers of Nueva Galicia and many of them had ancestors that practiced Islamic or Jewish religions. People have a right to stand up and say that their religion is not being treated with the respect it deserves. I am not Jewish, and I am not A Muslim but I will speak up for them. Most of the ancestors that we are studying have some Jewish or Muslim ancestors.

Why is Islamic Inspired Wars ridiculous? Again, did I miss something? Were they Lutheran inspired wars? Presbyterian inspired wars? Perhaps the Methodists were the cause? The only ridiculous statement is suggesting that it's a ridiculous statement and of course the other ridiculous statement suggesting that white Christians are responsible for the majority of terror.

Dear Paige,

I have a French ancestor who fought against heresy in France in the name of Catholicism. He committed a terrorist act when he locked the townspeople in the church they had all gathered in thinking that it was sacred land and that they would be safe. He burned the church down with everyone still in it. When someone said that many of the people in the church may have been true Catholics he responded by saying that God would judge their faith and if they were true Catholics then they would go to heaven.

This was an act of terrorism and not had nothing to do with what Christ preached. But according to your standards it would be appropriate to call this a Catholic inspired war. But I disagree. Just because a terrorist states that their inspiration is their religion that does not mean that the religion was the actual inspiration. Catholicism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism are not inspirations for terrorism. These religions do not condone terrorist acts.

Well, yes in your example if someone commits an act of terror in the name of the Catholic Church, than that would be Catholic terror. I assume you must be an academic of some kind, and probably Laura too, since you both seem desperate to prove a point that is relatively unprovable. Sadly, in the case of Islam, I don't have to go back to the Dark Ages to prove my point. In fact, that seems to be the problem, while most religions have moved out of the Dark Ages, one seems most committed to staying.

It is my hope that Mimi Lozano continues posting "Somos Primos" on this site as the political slants don't bother me. However, I do hope that Mimi Lozano understands that the words that are used could be taken as an attack on a religion and that has no place on a site dedicated to genealogical research.

I recommend everyone send their concern to Somos Primos and let them know your dissatisfaction with the way their newsletter is heading. I know I did. I let them know the magazine should remain a genealogy information newsletter without personal opinions about politics. I completely enjoy their very informative genealogy platform.

I'm pretty sure she's been called out on this before, but it seems that she continues to exploit her audience that comes to Somos Primos for genealogy information. She needs to remember...somos primos. Irony?

OK.  I'm on the mailing list, and Mimi sends me Somos Primos every month a day or two before the first and I love receiving it.It's the best, most comprehensive way of knowing what's going on in the varied arena of our Latino interests.  The only time I wasconcerned was when I read the International section (usually the last one) of the newsletter .  For a while, it seems that it did concern itself in a very angry way with the perceived negative aspects of the spreading of Sharia Law in different parts of the world.  I don't know enough about Sharia Law to have an intelligent opinion, so I made it a point to omit reading the International section, notwanting to be influenced one way or another.  The vast majority of the Somos Primos content is, in my humble opinion, balanced and fair and Iwouldn't want to lose this valuable resource and therefore thank Mimi for all her efforts.Alice Bravo-Blake

I think we can all agree that SP has been a good source of information at times.

What concerns me that a website dedicated to genealogical and historical research veers off into political and religious personal opinion so often.

Someone here wrote that this is a "free country" and that Mimi and her contributors can express themselves as they see fit....and that person was correct. But, then SP should not be presented as a research newsletter, but more of a blog or forum with the disclaimer that the entries are the personal opinions of she and her contributors.

The other thing that concerns me is that there is no sign of fact checking, nor is their counter point to some of the content.

Some on also wrote about not knowing enough about a subject ( Sharia Law in this case) to have what they considered an intelligent opinion. In this regard, maybe the one positive in all of this is that people will choose to learn more about certain subjects than to take the opinion of Somos Primos as the only "truth" . Real knowledge on any subject comes with hard work and study, and that has it's own rewards.

Given the fact that others have taken the time to share similar feelings, there is obviously a problem.

The irony in this is that to promote something called "Somos Primos" then dedicate time to thinly veiled rhetoric against certain groups is disturbing. Fanaticism of any kind is deplorable, whether it's Christian or Muslim.

If we're going to reflect on history that is pertinent to all of us here, let's look to a brief moment when in Al-Andalus (Medieval Southern Spain) Jew, Christian and Muslim found a way to live together.

It was by no means paradise and not without it's share of conflict, but there are lessons to be learned nonetheless.

Going forward I'd like to see religion and current politics left out of this "genealogical and historical" research newsletter. If not, call it a blog and have full disclosure on the content. I'd like to read something that will take me away from the strife going on in the world. If I want political or religious rhetoric it's not in short supply, not hard to find.

Many here have said "If you don't like it....don't read it." You are all correct, I'll choose not to read it.

Finally, for anyone who has had their DNA analyzed, I'm sure more than a few members here have some genetic kinship to those ethnic groups who are being vilified....Somos Primos indeed.

Many of the first settlers were cutthroats. Many of the first settlers did some things that we descendants find very offensive. Many people, from the left and right, are going to be very offended by the actions of some of their ancestors.

Politics and history are a part of the study of genealogy. Though I consider myself a moderate, I present both "right" and "left" sides of my ancestry. In my chapters on my De la Torre Ledesma ancestry I present both sides at the same time in a very dramatic piece of history. I descend from the main characters on both sides of this World changing incident. I say world changing because even though the events of that day only had immediate consequences for Spain, the repercussions of that event were felt many years later as the Europeans spread out to the Americas. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella would not have been on the throne if not for what happened that day in history. History was changed by an "Amiga", and a flip of a wrist.

As to differing political beliefs, I find it invigorating to challenge the beliefs of people on the right, left, and even moderates. A good debate of opposing views is a wonderful opportunity to expand your horizons. I advise you to engage people in conversations, maybe even try taking the opposing side in a discussion as it can do wonders in helping create an understanding of why others hold an opposing opinion.

I have also been offended from some views expressed on this site, but this community is a diverse one as it is represented by people from all walks of life, and all levels of education. The antisemitism expressed by some members on this site bothered me so much that I even left nuestrosranchos for a few years because of those comments. I got over it because I find it very rewarding to collaborate with many of the members of this site.

I continue to find Jews and conversos in the ancestry of the first European settlers in Nueva Galicia. My book is of interest to those who want the truth about the ancestry of many of the founding families of Nueva Galicia.

Joseph, I whole heartedly agree with you, but with all due respect, that is exactly the point.

Much of what is featured on Somos Primos has little if anything to do with genealogy or history, and what small percentage does seems to be lacking in historical validity.

I am very interested in a web publication that enriches my knowledge and understanding of our wonderful culture, but have no interest in weeding through someone's political opinions, religious fervor and social views to get a morsel.

You are completely correct, there are plenty of sites out there which would welcome the political, religious and social views expressed on Somos Primos, let's please stick to historical and genealogical research exclusively.

Until then...I'm no longer interested in receiving it.

Laura,

It's not Joseph's newsletter, he only forwards what he receives from Somos
Primos. He's not responsible for Mimi Lozano's comments. I would say that
you should take it up with Mimi Lozano, the owner and publisher of Somos
Primos.

Just remember, it's free speech and it's her newsletter and she can publish
whatever she wants to publish in her newsletter, whether we like it or not
or whether we agree with it or not.
