It is one of my family names on my paternal grandmother's father's
side. I just typed the name into Google and up pops the meaning that
it pertains to thorns. It made me think of the crown on Jesus' brow
as He hung on the cross for us.
Ricardo Espinosa-reo
I belong to a Espinosa Family from Guanajuato and Zacatecas (from ca 1813), in my research there is a possibility that the surname can be from a a jewish origin from Spain, when the jewish was expelled from spain in 1492 many of them converted to Christianity, they where called marranos, many Espinosas come from Burgos, España, some are Espinosa de los Monteros.
One of my family names is Espinosa. Thanks for the information above.

I started a family tree awhile back of the descendants of Leonor de Caceres, who was a member of the Sephardic Jewish Carvajal family who survived the Auto de Fe of 1596 in Mexico City.
One of her descendants married a "Tomas de Espinosa de los Monteros" in the state of Hidalgo in the 1660s, and they had several children. I was able to get to the 1700s for several descendants. It would be interesting to determine if some of these descendants ended up in Zacatecas or Jalisco and might be some of our ancestors. If anyone here recognizes any name as a possible ancestor, please share.
I started this family tree before FamilySearch started putting all of these records online, so I'm sure you all can find clearer images now. Some of the images are fuzzy because I was literally using my cheapy camera to take pictures of microfilm at the local family history center when I started this project back in 2008 when I was in school in Massachusetts. At some point I'll try to update it.
While I'm sure that most, if not all, of us have sephardic jewish ancestry in Mexico, we need to start backing up such claims with documentation, which is why I started the above project. Just my two cents.

Yes, the name pertains to spine tree, thorn bush, and the like. It is a name in my mother's paternal lineage which traces back to Santa Maria de los Lagos, Jalisco in 1666.
Espinosa in Zacatecas

Here's the family tree I made: http://texmexroots.blogspot.com/2008/12/sephardic-jewish-carvajal-famil…
