I have already posted some of my research on Juana Nunez de Sotomayors ancestry. I would like to add some of the information that I have discovered concerning her husband, Diego Ochoa Garibay y Solis.
1). Martin Uncella ( born in the 1300's) is the father of
1.1) Ivan (Juan) Martinez Uncella (born about 1385) escribano de la villa (There is a story about him being banished by the king of Castilla that I go into more detail in my book)
1.1.1). Martin Ibanez Uncella (born abt. 1430
Married to Juana Etxebarria (born abt 1435, daughter of Pedro Etxebarria, Señor del solar de Etxebarria. (Pedro is born on or before 1410 surname also later
spelled Echevarria.
They married and lived in Mondragon. Martin Ibanez Uncella and Juana Etxebarria are the parents of:
1.1.1.1.1). Reverend Juan de Mondragon (Catholic priest but not the Cardinal. The Cardinal is his nephew.)
1.1.1.1.2). Maria Martinez de Uncella. Married in Mondragon to Martin Fernandez de Mercado
1.1.1.1.3). Martin Martinez de Uncella ( el Viejo)
1.1.1.1.4). Teresa Ibanez de Uncella (born abt. 1465) married in Elorrio to Pedro Garcia de Esteibar ( born about 1465)
Teresa Ibanez de Uncella and her husband Pedro Gartzia de Esteibar are the parents of two daughters: Juana Ibanez de Esteibar and Marina Ibanez de Esteibar
1.1.1.1.4.1) Juana Ibanez de Esteibar (born abt. 1490) married to Juan Otxoa de Ybarlucea (born about 1490) (in Spanish:Juan Ochoa de Ibarlucea).
These two are the parents of 4 children that I know of :
1.1.1.1.4.1.1). Cardenal Juan de Mondragon, (named after his uncle). (Catholic)
1.1.1.1.4.1.2). Reverend Pedro de Mondragon (Catholic Priest)
1.1.1.1.4.1.3). Martin (Machin) Ochoa Ybarlucea (born in 1513) ( also known as Martin Ochoa Garibai) Ybarlucia and Garibay are both names used for being from Elorrio, one refers to the valley, while the other refers to the banks of the river where the fern grows.
Martin Ochoa Ibarlucea is married to Maria Suarez de Solis y Rodriguez, daughter of Juan Bueno de Solis and Catalina Rodriguez.
Martin Ochoa Ibarlucea also had a daughter, Magdalena Garibay, out of wedlock with an unknown Indian. Magdalena married Diego Lopez. It is unknown which sibling was born first so gave her the #1.1.1.1.4.1.3.2). As if she was born second to Diego.
Martin (Machim) Ochoa Garibay and Maria Suarez de Solis were the parents of:
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1). Diego Ochoa Garibay (born abt, 1531) married to Juana Nunez de Sotomayor
Diego Ochoa Garibay and Maria Solis are the parents of :
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.1). Francisca Ochoa Garibay married to Juan De La Mora Mendoza.
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.2.) Joseph Nunez de Sotomayor y Ochoa Garibay married to Gerónima de Calderón y Castañeda
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.3.) Juan de Ochoa Garibay y Nunez de Sotomayor married to Cecilia Vázquez de Solís y Pérez de Sandoval
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.4). Juan Bautista de Ochoa y Garibay married to Mencía de Castañeda y Calderón
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.5). Diego de Ochoa Garibai y Nunez de Sotomayor married to Juana de Bejines y Romero
1.1.1.1.4.1.3.1.6) Miguel Ochoa Garibay married to Francisca Zamora
Diego Ochoa Garibay and Maria Solis may have more children that I am not aware of.
I saw a posting on the internet that they also had a daughter named Magdalena but I have not verified that information. No marriage or children were listed for her.
1.1.1.1.4.1.4) Ana Ibaluzea y Untzella (baptized 9/May/1529)
(Important to pay attention to the numbering, She is a younger sister to Martin Ochoa Ibarlucea. (AKA Machin Ochoa -Garibay)
1.1.1.1.4.2). Marina Ibanez de Uncella married to Juan Erenuzqueta. Again, it is important to pay attention to the numbering, she is Teresa Ibanez de Uncella's younger sister. Juan and Marina left descendants that I am not going to list here. Their descendants stayed in Spain.

The “testamento” was written in French and the meaning of the French words was that she was leaving the money for Sol who was "carrying" her son Juan's child.
So although Juan de la Cerda did not leave a Legal male heir, Sol Martinez did give him an illegitimate son named Martin Gonzalez de la Cerda. Juan de la Cerda is grandson to the king.
Martin Gonzalez de la Cerda married Violante Gonçalves Pereira who was the illegitimate daughter of Alvaro Gonçalves Pereiral . Iria’s brother, San Nuño de Santa María, is a famous saint, known as the “Protector de Portugal” , His baptismal name is Nuñez Álvarez Pereira.

Thanks again and have a Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Ricci,
First of all, thanks for all of your work, it is greatly appreciated. I started working on my ancestry last year and as of now I have been able to trace it back to 11 generations (Jalisco, Nueva Galicia, Espana). I'm a descendant of Martin de Ochoa y Garibay Ibarlucea ( 11th great grandfather). I see that you have some information on his mother's side (Juana Ibanez de Esteibar) but I was wondering if you knew Juan Otxoa's background.
My direct line:
Enrique Ochoa Cardenas nacido en Colima, Colima 1988
-Mi padre: Enrique Ochoa Casillas nacido en Pihuamo, Jalisco 1964
-Mi abuelo: Jesus Apolinario Ochoa Magana. Pihuamo, Jalisco 1923

-11mo Bisabuelo: Martin de Ochoa y Garibay Ybarlucea.

In this journey, I've discovered some very interesting things. Like the fact that my great grandfather was the son of an "uncle/niece marriage" (not cool).
Enrique Ochoa Cardenas ancestry
Dear Enrique,
I have Juan Otxoa de Ybarlucea (born about 1490) (in Spanish:Juan Ochoa de Ibarlucea) as the son of Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea from Elorrio. Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea was an Escribano. It is most likely that Martin Ochoa is a converso. Though it is a high probability that Martin is Juan's father, it is not conclusive. I still need to do more research to say that it is 100% that he is his father.
In the Jewish culture, all men were required to read and write. It was a requirement that they be able read the Torah. Most non-Jewish people in those years were not literate. The Black Plague killed off many escribanos as they also became infected when they went to visit the sick to record their last testaments and their deaths. Since readers and writers were scarce, the more escribanos that died from the plague, the more Jews and conversos were recruited to take their place.
The direct line that you provided has a little different information than the family tree that I have put together on your line.
Here is what you posted plus my corrections:

I don't have your uncle /niece information. I have the spouses in the generations before them. Please provide her information so that I can add it to my records.
I took a look at your ancestry and I see that besides the Ochoa Garibay, we have many other ancestors in common. If you look at some of the work that I have posted from last month to a few years ago, you will see many of your ancestors in Spain.
I haven't posted all of my work as it is too much. I am writing a book with your Ochoa, Nuñez de Sotomayor, Lomelin, Coria-Lopez Peralta, Ha-Levi /house of David, Villaseñor, Boccanegra and other ancestries that go back many, many centuries.
Thank you for your comments,
Rick A. Ricci
RE: Enrique Ochoa Cardenas Ancestry
Wow. Thanks again for the info Rick. I'll add this to my tree.
You're right about my 5th great grandfather's name: Joseph Francisco Ochoa y Oseguera, I copied his wife's name by mistake when I wrote the comment. Good catch.
I'm interested in reading your book once it comes out.
Happy Holidays!

Maria Eulalia Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza and Ma.Isabel Mendoza
Dear Enrique,
-4to Bisabuelos: Diego Eugenio de la Trinidad de Ochoa Padilla. Tamazula, Jalisco 1754, and his second wife, Isabel Mendoza
It is believed by some people that Diego Eugenio de la Trinidad de Ochoa Padilla had two wives. The two wives had very similar names and more research needs to be done to discover whether they were actually two people or just one.
The two names are Maria Eulalia Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza and Maria Isabel Mendoza.
In the first town that they lived in the wife is named Eulalia Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza or Isabel Eulalia Hurtado de Mendoza. In the second town she is named Maria Isabel Mendoza or just Isabel Mendoza.
Enrique Ochoa's Coria connection
Dear Enrique,
When I looked at your family tree I looked for other connections to my research. Even though you asked for Ochoa information, your family tree provided another piece to the Coria puzzle. Even though it was only a small piece to be added to the many pieces that I already have on the Coria family, it was a very welcome addition. Your small piece pushed me to go back and try again to solve the Coria dilemma. The pieces didn't seem to fit together until your added piece, plus a comment from Marcelina (Fabiola), helped me arrange the pieces so that it all makes sense.
Marcelina had stated that we should look at a couple of other places for more information. I had responded that I already had those sources. When I added your piece to the puzzle, I took another look at all the information that I had, and came up with a solution where all the pieces fit. I still need to revisit all the sources and make sure that there aren't any mistakes.
Thanks again,
Rick A. Ricci
RE: Enrique Ochoa's Coria Connection
I'm glad my family tree helped you, but I'm curious. What was that piece in particular?
Thanks!

Change in surnames according to location given
Someone asked me to explain the change in surnames in the Ochoa-Garibay pedigree.
If someone here in West Los Angeles asked where I live I would say Mar Vista. If I was in Northern California I would answer Los Angeles. if I was in another state, let's say a state clear across the country on the eastern coast, I would answer California. If I was in another country, I would answer the United States of America. This is how the surname sometimes changed from one generation to the next for Spaniards in the 15th and 16th centuries. The surnames didn't always change permanently. This was a naming pattern in these basque provinces. Some families kept their same surname even if they moved around. Some other families changed their surname often. In some families everyone changed their surname if one person changed his surname, in other families, every sibling may have a different surname.
Juan Martinez de Uncella de Mondragon de Aramayona de Alava
Ivan (Juan) son of Martin residing in the church jurisdiction of Uncella in the Villa Mondragon, from the valley Aramayona, from the Alava province, Basque Country, Spain.
Iglesia de Uncella from the Valle Aramayona, provincia Alava,
Villa de Mondragon
Later! Ybarlucea and Garibay show up as part of the surname. We have Martin Ochoa Ybarlucea becoming Martin Ochoa Garibay. The change is Ybarlucea to Garibay, from the banks of the river where the fern grows in Elorrio (Ybarlucea) to the valley where Elorrio is located (Garibay)
The banks where the fern grows in Elorrio= Ybarlucea
Valle de Elorrio= Garibay
Provincia de Guipozcoa
Basque Country
I hope this helps,

Eight generations
1). Martin Uncella ( born in the 1300's) is the father of
1.1) Ivan (Juan) Martinez Uncella (born about 1385) escribano de la villa (There is a story about him being banished by the king of Castilla that I go into more detail in my book). Ivan (Juan) is the father of
1.1.1.4). Teresa Ibanez de Uncella (born abt. 1465) married in Elorrio to Pedro Garcia de Esteibar ( born about 1465). Their marriage and life in Elorrio, Basque Country strongly influences the change in surname
Teresa Ibanez de Uncella and her husband Pedro Gartzia de Esteibar are the parents of:
1.1.1.4.1) Juana Ibanez de Esteibar (born abt. 1490) married to Juan Otxoa de Ybarlucea (born about 1490) (in Spanish:Juan Ochoa de Ibarlucea). They are the parents of
1.1.1.4.1.3). Martin (Machin) Ochoa Ybarlucea (born in 1513) ( also known as Martin Ochoa Garibai) Ybarlucea and Garibay are both names used for being from Elorrio, one refers to the valley, while the other refers to the banks of the river where the fern grows.
It is unknown which sibling was born first so gave her the #1.1.1.4.1.3.2). As if she was born second to Diego. A marriage dispensation of descendants of the two half siblings helps organize the family tree.
Martin (Machim) Ochoa Garibay and Maria Suarez de Solis were the parents of:
1.1.1.4.1.3.1). Diego Ochoa Garibay (born abt, 1531) married to Juana Nunez de Sotomayor
Diego Ochoa Garibay and Juana Nunez de Sotomayor are the parents of :
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.1). Francisca Ochoa Garibay married to Juan De La Mora Mendoza. Second marriage to Alonso Romero Chavez.
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.2.) Joseph Nunez de Sotomayor y Ochoa Garibay married to Gerónima de Calderón y Castañeda
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.3.) Juan de Ochoa Garibay y Nunez de Sotomayor married to Cecilia Vázquez de Solís y Pérez de Sandoval
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.4). Juan Bautista de Ochoa y Garibay married to Mencía de Castañeda y Calderón
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.5). Diego de Ochoa Garibai y Nunez de Sotomayor married to Juana de Bejines y Romero
1.1.1.4.1.3.1.6) Miguel Ochoa Garibay married to Francisca Zamora y Lopez de Fuenllana

Diego Eugenio Ochoa Padilla (Tamazula 1754)
Saludos Pariente

You can find Martin Ochoa y Esteibar on the list of Pasajeros where they name his father as Juan Ochoa and his mother as Juana Esteibar.

Francisca Ochia Garibays second marriage
I forgot to add that Francisca Ochoa Garibay y Nunez de Sotomayor had a second marriage to Alonso Romero Chavez. I descend from the first marriage many times. I also descend from Her brother Juan Ochoa. My wife also descends from the Ochoa Garibay family.
Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea
Juan Otxoa de Ybarlucea (born about 1490) (in Spanish:Juan Ochoa de Ibarlucea) is most likely the son of Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea from Elorrio. Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea was an Escribano. I believe that he is the same escribano that works for the King. This would mean that Juan Otxoa Ybarluceas son was named after his grandfather. The grandfather is not found with the Garibai surname but the grandson Martin Otxoa Ybarlucea was also known as Machin Ochoa Garibay.
Juana Nunez de Sotomayor is the wife of Diego, not Maria Solis
By mistake in two places I named Maria solis as a parent with Diego when Juana Nunez de Sotomayor is what I meant to write
I wrote this mistake above where I list their children. Maria Solis is Diego Ochoa Garibays mother
I also made the same mistake when I mentioned that Diego and his wife may have more children then I am aware of. Again it should say Juana Nunez de Sotomayor and not Maria Solis.
Sorry for the errors,
