Hello Everyone,

I think I may have found a lead on our Leonel de Cervantes married to Leonor de Orozco. Their son Jose de Cervantes (married to Isabel Carranza) was a testigo For the dispensa of Miguel Hernandez Goyas and Luisa Becerra. As part of his testimony he admits to being a relative of Miguel's in the 4th degree (though, I think it is really 3rd and 4th degree). Here is the link to the dispensa and Jose's testimony:

Miguel Hernandez was the son of Antonio Hernandez Goyas (Vasquez) and Leonor Casillas, the grandson of a Francisco Vasquez Hernandez, and a great-grandson of Martin Vasquez de Lara and Isabel Hernandez. Martin was the son of Martin Vasquez Zermeño and Ana Garcia de Miranda, the brother of Baltazar Vasquez de Lara (Luisa's ancestor) and of Elvira Gil de Lara Vasquez. Mariano Gonzalez Leal cites Elvira as married to a Jeronimo de Cervantes Orozco, with at least one daughter named Maria who was under the guardianship of her grandfather Martin Vasquez Zermeño before he died. I believe that Jose de Cervantes's testimony suggests Jeronimo and Elvira were also the parents of Leonel Cervantes (married to Leonor de Orozco).

The testimony of the other two witnesses, Nicolas de Ornelas and Tomas Sánchez de Mendoza exclude the parentesco being from Leonor de Orozco. Both of these were Jose de Cervantes's cousins, the sons of Leonor's two sisters Petronila and Maria discussed earlier in this thread. However, they both stated that the generales did not apply to them, leaving the relationship with Miguel Hernandez Goyas to be through Jose's father Leonel.

What do you all think? Does anyone have more on this Jeronimo de Cervantes Orozco?

There is one other aspect that might help us go further with this family. There was another Geronimo de Cervantes Villaseñor in Jalostotitlan who was married to Ana Muñoz Lozano de Hermosillo. They lived with their family at La Cañada de Don Geronimo de Villaseñor. Could he be a descendant of the earlier Jeronimo de Cervantes Orozco that was married to Elvira Gil de Lara? The only clue I have to his ancestors is the testimony of Joaquin de Anda Flores de la Torre for the marriage of Geronimo's daughter, where he says he is her relative.

Joaquin Is the great-grandson of Esteban de Anda Altamirano and his wife Catalina. Esteban also had three daughters with his first wife Beatriz de Barroso y Vera who married Cevantes Villaseñors. Their daughter Bernarda married Francisco Villaseñor and were involved in a lengthy legal battle over inheritence with Bernarda's half-brother Pedro. One unnamed daughter was married to a Tomas Cervantes (who seem to have lived in Puruándiro). Another named Beatriz was married to none other than a Leonel de Cervantes! These three were the albaceas of Beatriz's will according to Gonzalez Leal. Could Geronimo de Cervantes Villaseñor be a descendant of one of these three? Could they also be related to the Jeronimo Cervantes married to Elvira Gil de Lara?

Hello,

I don't have much to contribute other than the padron for Puruandiro, Michoacan from 1668. It will give you an idea of some of the families that lived in the area. You'll find the Vargas (Machuca) Berbers, Alcalas, Cervantes, Villasenors, Orozcos, etc. from this time period and location. Perhaps it might bear some fruit or help to rule out or confirm a theory:

Hi Sus, thanks for posting these links! I have gone through them again and it looks like I had some errors in my previous post regarding the Barroso-Cervantes-Anda families.

It looks like Beatriz Diaz Barroso married twice. The first was to Leonel de Cervantes in Valladolid (Morelia, Michoacan) in 1609. Leonel seems to have been the son of Francisco de Orozco Villasenor and Leonisia de Guasca. He was dead before 1658, probably in Puruandiro where the family owned an hacienda called Carano that was sold by Beatriz and later disputed by her and Leonel’s son Tomas de Cervantes.

Beatriz and Leonel had the following children:
1) Matias de Cervantes Vera, b. Mar 1610 in Morelia.
2) Ines de Cervantes Vera, b. Feb 1612 in Morelia.
3) Magdalena de Cervantes, b. 1615 in Morelia.
4) Tomas de Cervantes
5) Leonel de Cervantes
6) Beatriz de Cervantes

I am not certain, though it seems likely that Beatriz’s son Leonel de Cervantes is the one who baptized a daughter named Beatriz in Lagos de Moreno (May 1645) with Maria de Villegas. Her padrinos were Lazaro Ortiz and Catalina de Ulloa.

Beatriz then remarried to Esteban de Anda Altamirano, also a widower of Catalina Lopez de Portugal. The two had at least one daughter: Bernarda de Altamirano who married Francisco de Cervantes Villasenor. I still do not know the parents of this Francisco. They had at least two children mentioned in the diligencias testamentarias:

1) Jose de Villasenor Cervantes
2) Teresa de Cervantes

It is possible they had additional children. In the 1669 padron of Lagos de Moreno, there is a Teresa de Cervantes (soltera) with a house of Cervantes girls, Ines, Mariana, Micaela, etc. (all doncellas). Immediately after Teresa, there is another house headed by a soltera named Antonia de Cervantes, who is joined in the house by Josepha de Cervantes (soltera), Isabel and Mariana de Cervantes (doncellas), as well as Angela and Nicolas de Cervantes (who have not yet received communion). Could these two be the daughters of Francisco de Cervantes Villasenor and Bernarda Altamirano? Who are all these other Cervantes ladies?

The last Nicolas de Cervantes might be the one who married a Francisca de Ledesma in 1670, Lagos de Moreno, though he may be too young. Nicolas is listed as hijo de padres no conocidos in the marriage record and Francisca is identified as a criada of Antonio de Araujo. Their padrinos were Francisco de Cervantes and Dna Maria de Cervantes, su hermana. This might be the Francisca de Ledesma listed as a mulata in the household of Antonio de Araujo in the 1669 padron, on the same page as the household of Teresa de Cervantes.

I think there is a gap of about one generation separating these Cervantes from Geronimo de Cervantes Villasenor cc. Ana Munoz Lozano. We will have to see if the Jeronimo de Cervantes cc Elvira de Lara is connected with this family, though with the coincidence of names it seems likely.

One other thing to consider is the possible relationship between Leonor de Orozco cc Leonel de Cervantes and Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos cc Juan de Vargas Machuca (Cervantes?). The second couple are also mentioned in this post:

Juan de Vargas and Leonor has the following children:
1) Nicolas de Vargas Avalos, b. Mar 1648 in Guadalajara.
2) Juana de Vargas Orozco, b. May 1652 in Guadalajara.
3) Diego de Vargas Orozoco, b. Feb 1653 in Guadalajara.
4) Antonio de Vargas Orozco, b. Feb 1659 in Tlaltenango.
5) Juan Ramon de Cervantes m. Luisa Flores de Alcala in Puruandiro, 1674.

The last two required a dispensa, which connects Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos with the Orozco-Morcillo family of Michoacan. Here is the tree:

Could this Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos be the daughter of Alonso de Avalos and Catalina Orozco confirmed in Lagos in 1624? That would make Catalina the sister of Leonor de Orozco Morcillo, both daughters of Juan Lucas Morcillo and Isabel de Orozco Aguilera.

It is also worth keeping in mind that Juan’s use of Cervantes is likely on his father’s side, rather than Leonor’s. Could he be a member of the Vargas Machuca Berber and Lopez del Castillo Villasenor family? They also had connections with Guadalajara and Tepatitlan via the de la Torre Ledesma and Venegas de Torres families.

Now, what does that do for Leonor Orozco cc Leonel de Cervantes? Could they be the same person?

On the one hand, I could not find a primary source lister the name of her husband as Leonel de Cervantes. The only thing I have seen listing him is Retoños, but with no specific source for this couple. Does anyone have something that names him specifically?

There is also the possibility that the testimony with which I started this thread was a misdirection. Jose de Cervantes says he is a relative “en quarto grado de consanguinidad”, but could this be referring to the consanguinity of his wife? Isabel Sanchez de Carranza would also be a relative in quarto grado igual via the Sanchez de Lara family. Though I would guess he would have said por afinidad if that is what he was referring to alone, right? There is also a slight possibility that Leonor could have had two marriages, or that these are two separate Leonor’s altogether.

More questions than answers, but still it seems we are getting closer.
