I just wanted to share a recent experience in my research with the group.
Until recently when I wanted a copy of a document, I would take the film off the viewing machine, sometimes wait to use one of the copiers and then usually get mediocre results from the printer. Some films will not print at all at my FHC because they don't have enough contrast and the printer does not like that.
So a couple of weeks ago I saw a couple taking photos of the projection of their film. I decided to try it out with the Tlaltenango marriages film that I am going through (which is a negative so it makes it somewhat trickier) and other than having to hold the camera really steady, it works great. I am posting a couple of the images that I have from that film in the Albums section so people can see.
If anybody would like additional instructions or tips, let me know.
Problem copying films.
I had a problem with films that I could barely read on the projector, when I
tried to print them, the results were very disappointing, I couldn't read
them at all. I hope these instructions will work for you and anybody else
who is having the problem.
This are the instructions I was given by the FHC.:
If you are using film that has a gray background do the following procedure:
1.-Click on "Scan from fiche/film"
2.-Click on "Settings" in lower left corner
3.-In "User Preference" block click on "positive". (Use arrow at right of
block to change from "negative" to "positive".)
4.-Set "Brightness" level to desired level
5.-Click "Scan" in lower left.
6.-Continue to adjust brightness and scan until desired image is obtained.
7.-Click "Finished Scanning"in lower right.
8.-Delete all other images before printing. ( if you don't, all images will
be printed.)
To delete images click "Delete" in upper right. This will display the
"delete a file" block.
9.- While in the "Delete a file" block, hold down the "Ctrl" key while
clicking each image you want to delete, then click "delete".
10.-Click "Print" in upper left.
I recommend that you make a hard copy of these instructions and take them
with you to your FHC next time you have some "tough" films to examine.
Good luck.

Type of Machine: was-Problem copying films.
John,
I don't think all FHC's have the same machines for copying. Sounds like
yours has a scanner copier set up.
Can you do me a favor and tell me the exact name and model number of the
piece of equipment you are using for the procedure below? Also if the
director has any idea of the cost? Who knows but maybe my FHC will get
one. We just have the kind of copier where you roll the film to the
right place. there is a darker/lighter selection and you click on print
and its done.

Copier Info
I have no idea how many FHC's have the equipment that we have here. The
Murrieta , CA. FHC is pretty small, they only have four "Standard"
projectors plus the one attached to a computer. So I figured that possibly
most of the FHC's have the same equipment.
I'll get all the details on the equipment being used at the FHC next
Tuesday. That is the earliest that I can get the information. They have
been closed all week.
The projector is coupled to a computer that has a printer.

Copier Info
John,
I would say that your center probably has one of the more modern viewers and I will venture a guess and say that it is probably more of an anomaly than the norm.
The Fremont FHC is even smaller. They have 2 regular viewers and 2 smaller ones for smaller film sizes. The viewer that makes the copies is not computerized and in order to change from a positive to a negative you need to change the toner cartridges.
I have learned to take photos of the documents. I bring a sheet of white mat board and set this on the shiny glossy viewer to eliminate the glare. I place a small brightly colored post it note with the film number before I take the photo so the film number is recorded on the photo. I do need a tripod to steady the photo and I will do that soon.
Thanks to all for your good tips.

Digital Cameras Instead of Copies
Amazing Arturo, I'm just uploading a Tilt setup you can use to reduce
the angle needed to take digital films. I've almost completely converted
to using digital shots of my records. I bought one of those mini tripods
and that elimates that need to a great extent of needing to hold
perfectly still. Before the tripod I got mixed results now I get almost
100% clear shots.
look in the albums in a few minutes for my tilt set up
