My family is very large, my father is the youngest of 11 siblings. his father was born in zacatecas mexico, his name was benjamin. he had a brother named ramerio. I am researching our family but no one seems to know what my grandfathers, fathers name was. I have heard that he was very tall light skined and very strict. it is exciting to find out new information on my heritage. about the people and the many stories I have read. I am very happy to be a member of this group. I have been stuck for a while now on my research, and this gives me a new hope of learning more about my family history.
still searching for viramontes
i have become very frustarded lately, i have spent hours and hours online searching various websites in search of some sort of links to my family. with no luck. about the microfilms can anyone tell me, do you order them through the mail or do you or can you look at them online i am not sure how to do this? i have also been trying to ask family members about my great grand parents again with no luck. is it common that hispanic people didnt care about such records or is it because of some other reason. it seems important to me to pass your heritage down to your children but it is difficult when you cant find it to pass down. jovana

Don't get frustrated, be patient. You should start by ordering the social security application for your grandafther. That will list his parents, birth date and birth place. I know that on my grandfather's it actually listed his mother with her maiden name so once you have that I am sure it will be rather easy to find the correct place to look.
Many films are not yet indexed so you cannot access the information online. You will have to head over to your local family history center (www.familysearch.com) and order the film. You cannot check the films out so you have to look at them there in the family history center. The people who work at the centers are very helpful.
You should find where your closest center is and perhaps visit it in anticipation of getting the social security application for your grandfather. That way when it comes you will be ready to go.

Welcome to the group. I am sure there are people here who would be more than glad to help. We will just need a bit more information. Unfortunately in genealogy physical descriptions of people are not very useful. I suppose what we need to start with is whether you know the name of the town and the approximate date that your granfather was born.
I am pretty certain that the name Viramontes is an alteration of the name Miramontes, which is very common in Zacatecas and I have been able to trace it back to the original immigrant from Spain in the late 1500s, Juan de Miramonte who married Maria de Haro y Saucedo and had several children in Tlaltenango, Zacatecas.
If you do not know the exact birthplace of your grandfather and if he immigrated to the US, you can try the Social Security death index. You should be able to get his SSN and then order his application which will list his parents and birthplace...
I think this may be your grandather:
BENJAMIN VIRAMONTES 20 Oct 1901 Sep 1973 90650 (Norwalk, Los Angeles, CA) (none specified) 554-16-1732 California
Give us some more info and we will go from there....

Arturo,
In your last group letter, I was very happy for all you shared with the
group about illiteracy & name misspellings.
Facts like those that you shared makes so much sense and are a big help to
those of us who know NOTHING about searching .In my own search the various
spellings of names and date inaccuracy have helped me to understand the
whys and where's.
Thank you,
Hope

Arturo/Jovana,
This is why I like our group! Members will come out of the woodwork to help a fellow member with research.
Jovana, there are many knowledgable people in this group who have helped me in my research....it's awesome how much these people know and how much they're willing to help.
You may also want to check the census records. Maybe you can find your grandfather and his parents on one of the census records. They're helpful up to a point...then at least you'd have a name.

Jovana,
The surname Viramontes is very prominent in Jalpa Zacatecas. Unfortunately for you, Jalpa's records are not far reaching in time, they date back to the very late 1800's. In some instances you may be able to find some records for Jalpa in Tabasco, Villa del Refugio, Zac and some in Nochistlan, Zac. and possibly some in Juchipila Zac. You may have to look in nearby towns, cities and municipalities to get information going back further than 1864 which is the earliest year for informacion Matrimonial. The year 1884 has the earliest records for civil/birth records. We have a few people in this group who have Viramontes ancestry from Jalpa, Robert Hernandez & Yvonne. See the files section in Nuestros Ranchos, you might be able to contact them directly. I have highlighted the films you can order through your local family history center for Jalpa Zac.
Good Luck and welcome !!
