The Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake City will be held Friday, October 13th
and Saturday, October 14, 2006. There is no charge for any of the
seminars and you do not have to pre-register. All the presentations will be
in Spanish and the speakers are bilingual. The schedules will follow in a
separate e-mail.

1. Salt Lake Plaza Best Western Hotel has a limited number rooms for us at
$82.00 plus tax for a room for two persons. It is located next door to the
FHC Library. Their website is:
www.plaza-hotel.com and their toll free number is: 1-800-366-3684. You have
to mention "Ranchos Genealogy Group" to get the discounted price since there
are a few rooms reserved for us. There is NO free continental breakfast
but they have a nice restaurant that serves a buffet as well as good menu
selections. Since October is a very busy time for them I was only able to
hold a small block of rooms from October 8th through October 15th. You can
choose to stay ANY number of days between Oct 8th - 15th but you would have
to check with them to see if rooms are available for any other dates.

2. Howard Johnson Express Inn offers us a rate of $35.00 plus tax (total
$39.32) for a single queen bed room and a rate of $49.00 plus tax (total
$55.05) for a
room with two double beds for 1 to 4 persons. Go to "Google" and type in
"Howard Johnson Express Salt Lake City" to see their facility. Their toll
free number is: 1-800-541-7639. Ask for Mira or Connie and mention
"Ranchos Genealogy Group" for the special rate. They offer a FREE
continental breakfast (coffee, juice, bagels, cold cereal, etc) and they
are walking distance from the Library (about two blocks). There is a free
trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you do not want
to walk. This hotel is able to provide rooms for us for any number of days
you might need......provided reservations are made EARLY.

Both hotels provide shuttle service to and from the airport. Upon your
arrival at the Salt Lake City airport you can call 801-521-3450 for shuttle
service to Howard Johnson Express Inn. For those staying at the Salt Lake
Plaza Best Western you can call 801-521-0130 for their shuttle service.
There are courtesy telephones available near the baggage area of the
airport.

Each person will be responsible for making their own reservations, travel
arrangements, etc

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Express during my one and only visit. The rooms are very comfortable and it is within walking distance. I would like to stay there again if I go and would like to know if anyone else is staying there? I would rather not share a room with anyone and this is affordable for me. Only problem is walking home alone late in the evening. It is not the best of neighborhoods at night, typical downtown with vagrants etc. If there is someone to walk back with I will make my plans to come to the conference and stay a couple of days to do some research and meet and socialize with my fellow Ranchos members.

I will keep you posted when I hear from others as to where everyone is
staying.

On another subject, In April 2006 you responded to John on the subject of
viewers at the FHCs. You mentioned that you have learned to take photos of
the documents at the viewers using a mat board and that you needed to use a
tripod to steady the photo. How did that turn out? I tried this today at
the FHC but I must be doing something wrong because it did not work.......I
used a mini-tripod. Please let me know if you have had success doing this.

Josie I'm butting in here.

I'm not sure what happened in your situation but I'm guessing that a
couple of things were possible:

1) did you have your "macro" set on your camera. . .that is the setting
that allows you to take pictures close up (check your manual).

2) did you have the camera set for "no flash" (check manual)

3) I have to use my mini tripod only with two of the three legs
extended. So there is still a bit of holding it steady but the
differenece in quality from holding it in the open with just my hands is
100% I was getting so many blurry photos before and now they are a rarity.

4) you might need to make the image a little smaller on the reader as
sometimes the image is way too big for being that close.

I have just booked my plane ticket to go to the conference. Unfortunately due to work schedule and some other trips that I have to make around the same time, I will not be able to be in Salt Lake very long. I fly in on Thursday evening and fly back out on Sunday afternoon. So basically, I plan on attending some of the sessions and getting a few hours of film viewing... probably Zacatecas informaciones matrimoniales from the mid-1600s.

Who else is confirmed thus far and where is everybody staying? If there is a critical mass of Ranchos people in one hotel or another I will go there.

The schedules for the conference itself and the daylong session done by George Ryskamp the day before the conference are available on the website in Spanish and English in easy-to-read formatted PDFs.
