FamilyTreeDNA.com has lowered the price for the Family Finder test to $99.
Since there are so many of us that have at least one ancestor in common
this can be an additional tool in our research by helping each other out
with DNA matches and triangulation.

I just signed up for the Los Altos de Jalisco DNA project on Family Tree DNA and ordered the kit for Family Finder + mtDNAPlus. I am really excited to find out the results. Finally, I hope to have some answers or at least clues.....

Thanks Armando for all the info and for taking the time to answer all our questions. Its something I've thought about for a long time. The wealth of info you provided has been invaluable.

I look forward to sharing my results in the near future.

Do you or anyone else have any idea how many or what percentage of Nuestros Ranchos members have had any of their
DNA tested?   It might help me decide whether or not to proceed with the autosomal test, as ones chances of finding a match is limited to their data base.

The number and percentage of people that have tested seems to be small. The
number of people that share their family tree and respond to inquiries is
even smaller. My hope and expectation is that someday the number will be
high enough that we can have some concrete evidence that certain chromosome
segments are extremely likely to belong to a specific line. That will never
happen if everyone waits for someone else to test. You also don't know who
you have as matches until you test.

Another thing, many people are concentrating on just their male line and
that is only a small percentage of their ancestry. What about all of the
other lines? Family Finder is what can help us with those.

Hola Armando , I am really slow to comprehend, I read some and if I understand it the test goes back only 5 generations. If that is correct it doesn't seem worth it or am I missing something.

That is what the website states but when you take the test there is a list
of matches that show as 2nd Cousin - 4th Cousin, 3rd Cousin - 5th Cousin,
5th Cousin - Remote Cousin which means they can it even goes further back
than 5th cousin using their own wording on the matches. Even if it is a 5th
cousin that is 6 generations and not 5 which is a 4th cousin. Also, I have
found people that match both my DNA and my uncle's DNA and we have
ancestors in common that go back more than 5 generations. I also had my
mother tested and there are people that match my DNA and her DNA but they
don't have a common ancestor with us in the last 5 generations either. More
people that match us need to test in order to be able to triangulate to the
line that matches us in all of the cases. You will also need that and since
you and I likely have ancestors in common we might have inherited a segment
of DNA from a common ancestor. The only way you are going to see what is
available is by getting the test. Additionally, you might end up helping
people other than yourself.

When I had FamilyTreeDNA test myself and my husband, they did not provide percentages, but they did provide a list of people they had tested that "matched" us. All the people on my list live in NM, which I expect since I am Haplogroup C, Native American, Pre-Columbian, and my mother's Piro/Manso/Tewa ancestors have been in NM for hundreds of years. So I always knew of my Native heritage, down to the specific tribe. On my husband's list there was a man who lives in Texas that "matched" him, T1 Mesopotamian. The lists give us the contact e-mail addresses, but the man in Texas has never responded. I did get a response from an NR member who had the T Haplogroup, but couldn't find a common ancestor.

I had my MTDNA done and it came back Haplogroup A.. Native American
I had my Fathers Castanon DNA done and it came back Haplogroup R1b1
I had my mothers paternal line done through her brother Gutierrez it came back Haplogroup N.
I would like to have the test done that show's percentages.

Yes, the Family Finder test will provide percentages. Once you get the
results for that you will want to upload the raw data to Gedmatch.com or
email Doug McDonald at dmcdona@illinois.edu for a proper and free analysis
of your admixture. Their results are closer to what the Genographic 2.0
results would provide. The wording on the Population Finder in Family
Finder can be very misleading.

You might also find DNA matches and since your ancestors are well
documented you will have a higher likelihood of finding a documented common
ancestor. This could help other people as well.

I take it you haven't had SNP testing on your Y-DNA. Additionally I can't
find the Castanon or Castañon surname in ysearch.org. Did you upload your
results to ysearch.org? It would be great if you would join the Los Altos
de Jalisco DNA project with the Y-DNA and mtDNA testing you have done. Even
though the name of the project is for Los Altos they are also looking for
people from Zacatecas and Aguascalientes to test since many of the families
have common ancestors. You can order the Family Finder test and join the

I have never been tested for dna period,I would like to have it done but man it very confusing for me to make a choice of which one to get. As far as I know I don't have any castanon surname or connection . The bulk of mine are rooted in Los Altos , in Aguascalientes stemming from the late 16oos and early 1700s ,the same for Zacatecas. I trip cause I wonder if I would confuse the DNA testing because I have so much inbreeding its not funny or normal. Well if do have it done I guess I wiil try the 99 dollar special

the Castañon surname.

Since you have not done any DNA tests I recommend that you get a Family
Finder + Y-DNA37 under the combined tests at
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=losaltosdejalisco

It doesn't matter that our ancestors practiced endogamy. Not all of the DNA
was passed down to us. Some of it got lost through the generations. Using
triangulation with other people that match our DNA is what allows us to
narrow down common autosomal DNA segments to a specific line.

The relation to other people along the Y-DNA line is determined by STR and
SNP markers. You have to get the regular 37 marker test first which is for
the STR markers then a determination can be made which SNP tests are
recommended.

You should also upload a gedcom file once you have an account with
Familytreedna

my results are on the Gary Felix DNA site. It's the only one I registered with since he is doing Mexico DNA. My Castanon is from Zacatecas, my Gutierrez from Michoacán then went to Jalisco mid 1700's and my Maternal from Michoacán to Jalisco also also.

You should never feel bad abt bloodlines that connect over and over to the same families in Mexico.  In the earlier days it was very important to many families to keep the blood line pure.. meaning pure Spanish. If I remember correctly in los Altos the 10 or 12 founding families made a pact to only marry Spaniards to keep the blood pure and the land in the family.
 
In my family in Jerez, Zac we go to the Caldera family at least 3 times and if I can connect the families it will be more like 5 times!  I also have family from San Felipe Guanajuato in the late 1600's who went to Jerez, Zac. Antonio Lopez de Nava and Dominga Chavez and also Antonio Losano and wife Maria Gonzales Hidalgo.

If you click on the Join Request at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/losaltosdejalisco you can become part
of the Los Altos de Jalisco DNA project at no cost.

You should also have an option at FamilyTreeDNA to upload your Y-DNA to
ysearch.org

I see you only did a 12 marker test. In order to narrow down your
haplogroup to a specific subclade you would need to get the 37 marker Y-DNA
test and then an SNP test or two.

Wow, Armando. God Bless you for being an active contributor to NR. You are a great source for our education. Endogamy---I had never heard that word before, yet I think many Jalisco ancestors (my husband's) practiced it since I find that in researching his family tree.

So Ronnie, don't think your ancestors were not "normal", since endogamy seems to have been a common practice at a certain time in Jalisco, or Los Altos as it is called. So do get the $99 special, and let us know the findings. I am looking for more people with my husband's T1 Mesopotamian ancestry.

When you log into the FamilyTreeDNA page there is a dark blue menu bar at
the top. If you hover over Family Finder a drop-down menu appears and
Download Raw Data is the fifth option. Once you click it you will be taken
to the following page
https://my.familytreedna.com/download-files.aspx?Type=FFO that gives you an
option to download Autosomal Raw Data - GZIP, CSV. That file can be sent to
Doug McDonald at the email address I had posted previously.

Gedmatch.com is not accepting uploads until August which is when results
would be back for people that are just now ordering the test. Gedmatch has
5 calculators made by Dienekes Pontikos. The Globe13 is the newest one that
Dienekes has made but it is not available on Gedmatch.com

The Globe13 calculator tells you what percentage of the following markers
you have - North_European Mediterranean West_Asian Southwest_Asian Siberian
Amerindian West_African Palaeo_African East_Asian Australasian Arctic
South_Asian and East_African. This is a much better terminology than what
Familytreedna and Ancestry.com have decided to use.

If you send me your raw data file I can put it through the calculator for
you.

He responded to me in November 2012 at that address and that is why I had
posted that one. Now that I look at the email I had sent it shows that the
email address I sent the email to to be mcdonald@scs.uiuc.edu so try that
one. Give it a week or two for a response.

If you want me to put your file through one of Dienekes Pontikos'

The small number of folks at NR or other sites that take part in DNA testing might be due to economical reasons. As someone on a fixed income, I found even $99 hard to squeeze out of the budget, but I finally did it for both my husband and myself. He is T1 Mesopotamian, ancestors from Jalisco. I am C, Native American, pre-columbian, mother born in New Mexico. I have no way to find out my father's DNA (born in Zacatecas) since he had no brothers and no cousins living and I had no brothers. Due to failing health I can no longer keep up with things. Others might be in the same boat.

I once tried joining the free DNA testing offered by the LDS church, but they turned me down because I could not provide a complete family tree due to brick walls.
