I began working on my own family tree and slowly began to branch out

I go on to tell them my parents and grandparents names and make them

Help in Jerez Zacatecas

There is a site posted by Mr. Berumen de la Torre that you might
enjoy, it helped me since my Spanish is poor and reading the really
old records is a learning experience for me. When I compared my notes
with what Mr. Berumen posted online I found I had missed some
important information. His site is

It seems to still be under construction but his posted records were
very helpful to me.

Help in Jerez Zacatecas

Linda,
I couldn't help notice the name of Leonardo de la Torre
Berumen from Jerez.  Rich and I are researching Berumes (s instead of n)
from Jeres, Zac.

Bernardo BERUMES and Maria Marsela
ORTIS
One of the children Joseph Francisco Xavier
BERUMES was born 18 Dec 1757 in Jeres,
Zac.
followed by two children  Joseph Melchor BERUMES de
Vera b. 7 Jan 1765 and Lorenzo de la Trinidad BERUMES b. 5 Aug 1760 both born in
Tepetongo, Zac.
Another son, our ancestor,  Santiago BERUMES m. Maria
Josefa SALAZAR, but we don't have birthdate or birthplace for
Santiago.

My question is in the mid-1700s could  BERUMES
and BERUMEN be the same?  I am aware of S and Z interchanging, but not
aware of S and N interchanging.
I think I will go look for a Santiago Berumen. I'll also
take a closer look at our documents of the  siblings.
I would have copied Leonardo de la Torre Berumen in on this
e-mail, but I noticed he doesn't read English and my Spanish is nil.

Let me give you  a quick run down of the Gonzalez family that I am

Pedro Gutierrez married to Candida Gonzalez, they

Rosario married Simon Gonzalez.  Simon's

Simon Gonzalez and Rosario Gutierrez had three

Patricio married Josefa Cornejo and they had 8

Josefa Cornejo  parents were Jesus Cornejo

This is a pretty rough summary of the Gonzalez

Reading Old Handwriting

Viewing old church records:
I learned something about reviewing old church records
whenever trying to read them: You have to read them
real slow and look for key letters that make up your
ancestors first and last names. The overall
penmanship of the priests was very good, but the
copied documents are usually in poor condition because
of time.

A couple of years ago I was looking at the 1700s Jerez
church marriage records, and I noticed my
greatggggggmothers last name of Sanchez. The letters
S,a,c, h and z, stood out, and then I looked closer
and found my greatggggggfathers last name (Duarte)
which was spelled like Quarti. Upon further review of
the record I found other names that were barely
identifiable (Salazar and Sanchez)which were the last
names of my greatgggggggparents. They got married in
1797 in Jerez, and after years of research I was also
able to identify the other names listed on the record
as my aunt and uncle (Gamboa family).

After many years of researching, I have

Emile;  I agree with you post about old Handwriting and wrote that effect earlier. I am extracting - Our lady of Candelaria Cahtolic Church in Gatamala. I think I have the lettering right and the priest changes ! One priest will write and "T" by crossing a "J" another priest will come and the "J" becomes a semi-"J" with a "U" above it. SEEESH !  You are not the only one with this problem and I just wanted to express my frustration along with you.  One thing that gets tyo me is the thin pens used so the entry is faint and the letters undestingguishable. I prefer the broad sweeping strokes of some of the priest who us a standard caligraphy.

Happy to see your entry.

Hi John,

Of the Jalos surnames you mentioned, the only surname I
don't have is Cornejo, but I know two Jalos families with that surname who live
in a nearby town in Northern Calif.  Two brothers of which one
married a Gonzales and the other married a Gutierrez of
course.    I am distantly related to the wives.
 :)

My closest, most direct relative who was born in "El
Rancho de los Portales" was my G Grandmother Tomasa Gutierrez born March 6,
1844.  All of her siblings as well as her father, Dionicio Gutierrez were
born there.  Its a pretty large, tight-knit  group.  Dionicio
Gtz's wife was Maria-Lauriana-del-Refugio Perez (married June 7, 1841 in Jalos)
which ties me into the Franco & Perez clan.
I have many of both branches in my database..., and I
personally know other descendants from this rancho.

Of the Gonzales, I'm a little more confused & scattered
due to the common surname.  My closest, most direct relative was my G
Grandmother, Paulina Gonzales
