Do folks have an idea who is going to go to the SLC trip in October?



Josie has worked hard to get you information and it would be great if
you gave that trip a serious look if you are thinking you might go. I
for one will not be going as much as I would like to go.



If you think you might be going there is the matter of choosing a topic
for Professor George Ryskamp to speak on during that special session of
the seminar. If I was going I would love to hear a whole session on
nothing more than the Notario Records and how to get
a little better handle on how to research them.

The Hispanic
Conference in Salt Lake City will be held Saturday, October 14, 2006.  I
am expecting to receive the program schedule soon and will post it
then.  In the meantime, I have been informed that the Salt Lake Plaza
Best Western Hotel is now under new ownership. This has caused a price increase
in the hotel rate I had quoted in my previous e-mails. I contacted another
hotel and got good rates there as well.  I am providing both for your
convenience.
 
1.   Salt
Lake Plaza Best Western Hotel changed their price to $82.00 plus tax for a
room for two persons.  (Previously they had quoted $80.00 plus tax for a
room for up to 4 persons.)  Their website is: www.plaza-hotel.com and their
toll free number is: 1-800-366-3684.  You have to mention "Ranchos
Genealogy Group" to get the discounted price since there are a few rooms
reserved for us.  There is NO continental breakfast but they have a nice
restaurant that serves a buffet as well as good menu selections.  Since
October is a very busy time for them I was only able to hold a small block of
rooms from October 8th through October 15th.  You can choose to
stay ANY number of days between Oct 8th - 15th.

Howard Johnson Express Inn offered us a rate of $35.00 plus tax (total $39.32)
for a single queen bed room and a rate of $49.00 plus tax (total $55.05) for a
room with two double beds for 1 to 4 persons.  Go to "Google" and type in
"Howard Johnson Express Salt Lake City" to see their facility as well as
comments made by other guests who have stayed there.  Their toll free
number is:  1-800-541-7639.  Mention my name (Josie Trevino-Trevino)
and "Ranchos Genealogy Group" for the special rate. They offer a FREE
continental breakfast and they are about two blocks from the Library. 
There is a free trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you
do not want to walk.  This hotel is able to provide rooms for us for any
number of days you might need......provided reservations are made EARLY. 

 
Mickey and I have
stayed at both hotels in the past and like them equally well.  The
convenience of the Best Western Plaza Inn is that it is located right next door
to the Library.  Of course, you pay a little more for this
convenience.  The convenience of the Howard Johnson Express Inn is that you
can have your FREE continental breakfast, (coffee, juice, bagels, cold cereal,
etc) in your room and then either walk to the library or ride the free
trolley.
 

Each person will be
responsible for making their own reservations, travel arrangements,
etc
 
Please let me
know if you are interested in going, the number of persons attending, the
dates you will attend, etc.  Mickey and I are planning to arrive there
Sunday, Oct 8th and leave the following Sunday, Oct. 15th.  The Library is

Gomez Schirmacher from the FHC in Salt Lake City sent me the following
e-mail:
 
"Right now, we are looking at having some
advanced classes on Oct 13th and our regular conference for the local people and
anyone else on Sat. Oct. 14th.  George would be giving the classes Friday.
So I would imagine that your group would want to be here for the advanced
classes that will not be given on SAt. It will be nice to have this extra day of
classes. If your group has a topic which they want George to teach you can
suggest it. Also remember that as we get closer to the conference we will need
to know what films you need so we will have them at the library. Just inform
your group of the dates and have them block them out and we will have more
information as time goes by. It will be good to see you guys again."
 
The classes she refers
to for Friday, October 13th will be given by George Ryskamp.  This
is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best! 
 
Please let me know if there are any specific topics you
would like addressed so I can let them know.  You can also be deciding on
which film you will be using there so it can be ordered prior to your
arrival.

Hispanic Conference in SLC in October.  It is very nice of them to offer to
help with the film orders because sometimes the film you need is not there and
needs to be ordered from the vault.  This can take a day or so and reduces
our research time.......

Notice the 1-800 number above. We usually start
calling a month or two ahead of time so the films will be there for sure.
Always tell them you are from out of state.  It puts you higher up on the list. I order 5
films in my name plus 5 films in my husband's name. Then my sister also orders
films for us. So gather the
groups film numbers that are needed and send
themto me, We can
help you order them.

The first thing we do when we arrive at SLC is make
sure ALL films we ordered are in. If they can't be found in the regular location
nor the overflow location, then we go to the window and re-order them. If this
is done early enough, they could be in by
2:30 that afternoon.

Or if the film you order is not clear, faded, not the
right one, then get to the window as soon as possible to order a better copy or
the correct one.

I am definitely going to try to make it. I think it will be a wonderful experience and a chance to meet some Ranchos members.

I for one have only ever seen a few in Guadalajara but I understand that these were kept in many places, i.e. their collection was not centralized. I know that there are many notarial records in Zacatecas for people who lived in the region where I am concentratin (Colotlan, Totatiche, Tlaltenango).

Estaban Valdes Salazar was also telling me that they are now in the process of organizing and cataloguing all of the municipal archives in Tlaltenango and he believes there are some notarial records there as well.

That would be a great start... how does one find out who the relevant notary would have been and where he would have archived copies of the documents he created?

I am tentatively planning on attending in October but not sure. We will be going to Zacatecas at the end of September for Las Fiestas Patronales of Tlachichila and hope to be back by then.   My sister and I are planning a trip to Salt Lake in May and we are preparing for our trip in accordance to Rich and Kitty Cortez' lesson. I don't believe anyone presented the minutes of the March 4 Northern California meeting in Sacramento. Kitty gave a presentation on how to plan and prepare for a trip to the Salt Lake City library. I am so excited that I know I squeak every time I think about it. We are generating an Excel database that can track all the documents we need to find by family group, film number and dates, whether marriage, baptism or other, this after having identified in our database if it's a document found on the IGI or by some other method.   We are lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two
truly remarkable and talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not only bring their gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those who come into contact with them.   Thanks Rich and Kitty!!!

the group to help them prepare for SLC in October 2006?  The first time I
went I bought the book "Going to Salt Lake City to do Family Research" by J.
Carlyle Parker and it helped me tremendously. ( I am not suggesting
everyone buy a book )  It helps a lot to be PREPARED in advance and it
saves a lot of time and frustration, doesn't it?  :-)

preparing for our trip in accordance to Rich and Kitty Cortez' lesson. I don't
believe anyone presented the minutes of the March 4 Northern California meeting
in Sacramento.  
 
  I am so excited that I
know I squeak every time I think about it. We are generating an Excel database
that can track all the documents we need to find by family group, film number
and dates, whether marriage, baptism or other, this after having identified in
our database if it's a document found on the IGI or by some other method.
 
We are lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two truly
remarkable and talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not
only bring their gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those
who come into contact with them.
