Congratulations again Arturo....the piece was fascinating, albeit it took me
awhile to decipher it (I am more versed in English than Spanish)
You were right about the review of Guerrero - I certainly didn't know about
his indigenous/African background.
I will be going to a "Cultural Tour" in Monterrey within one week as a
representative of our school district in Illinois The Chicago Mexican American
Fine Arts Museum will be taking their exhibit to the Museum in Monterrey. They
will be featuring the African presence in Mexico. I am excited about
bringing back lessons and photos that will highlight the African presence in Mexico
- there is very little known about this within our Mexican history -- If I
can, I will share whatever was shared with me with this group.

Esperanza: African Presence in Mexico
Esperanza,
if there is any way possible can you scout for opportunities for the
http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com podcast project in the area of the
"African Presence in Mexico." I have a section (
http://nuestrafamiliaunida.com/podcast/coyote.html ) on the podcast
called "/*Coyote*/" that has Audio on this topic. I would very much like
to find more people or organizations to contribute audio material for
this area of the podcast. So if you see anyone that is particularly
fluent on teaching the history of the African Presence in Mexico or just
someone interested in contributing what they know I'm interested in
talking to them. Also if you have a digital recorder please take it with
you as there might be opportunities to do some interviews while you are
in Mexico or even the next time you are in the Chicago Mexican American
Fine Arts Museum.
thanks for considering this,
joseph

Book
Hi Joseph:
Just want to let you know that I followed your advice about obtaining a book through the "interlibrary loan system" and was able to get "El Libro de La Cofradia de Santiago de Burgos" form the University of Southern California, library. It only took two weeks.
Thank you.

Hi Joseph:
The book is basically the history of the Cofradia de Santiago de Burgos. It includes a transcription of the by-laws and the main part of the book is the collection of paintings of the some of the members, most of them on horseback and dressed ready to do battle. There are four paintings of the caballeros on each page. One caballero was Gonzalo Gonzalez de Fermosa (originally Hermosilla was called Fermosilla in the X century) It has nothing at all about his lineage, it states that it was founded in 1338 and Gonzalo Gonzalez appears on the first list of its founders.
At the end of the book, there is a short section with some genealogy information on a few of the members of the Cofradia.
I have already returned the book to the library, it should be available again probably in a couple of weeks or sooner, I did not want to keep longer than necessary, thinking that maybe some other members might want to check it out. I did get a picture of the painting of what could be my oldest ancestor, he was probably born around 1300...That's about 670 years ago!
The book might be of interest to anyone who has traced their ancestry to Burgos and the ancestor was a member of the Cofradia de Santiago de Burgos.
I am still waiting for my Y-DNA results. I found two sisters in one database who are a match to my Mt-DNA, which came back as Haplogroup A2, Native American. They were Gonzalez de Mendoza, from Coalcomán, in southern Michoacán. That was a surprise because my mother was born in Jerez, Zacatecas. my mother and these two sisters must have had a common female ancestor way back when...

John,
I would certainly be interested in a copy of the photograph of the image of one of our common ancestors.
