Hi people,
I'm tired of my old version of Family Tree Maker, and want to take advantage of some free or cheap websites that allow you to create your own page to share your family trees, stories, photos etc. I'd like to be able to share this with my family to have a place to document everything, share with family and hopefully get some of them excited and interested in doing more work. Anybody using or know of a good online program to use? The closest I can find to what I'm looking for is Tribalpages.com. Anyone using that?
Thanks,
Roberto

I uploaded my FamilyTreeMaker online to Ancestery.com for free. It's great because I can invite anyone to view it and contribute. I upload photos galore, write stories in it and can even upload video, etc.

Ancestry has a sister site called MyFamily that is very much like what you describe below, and it is free. You have to approve who can view your trees, etc, and signing up for passwords by guests viewers is required.
I've become disenchanted with putting my trees on Ancestry because if you leave them as "public" anyone can just pull your information over to their trees, and there is so much corrupted information in their databases now.
As an example, somebody trolling Ancestry pulled all the information on my maternal grandfather, Jose Marquez, all his ancestors, and added them to their tree. I know that the person who did it also had a grandfather by that name in another county in NM, and upon further investigation of her parents, I found a cousin of hers who had the correct information on their Jose Marquez. I have tried to contact the person who pulled my grandfather's information through the Ancestry system, but they do not respond. I have cousins who are diligent researchers who complain that they also have cousins who put up wrong information. Ancestry has been inserting messages on some family members that show all the contradicting information, but novices would just be confused by that.
I know through my local genealogical society that many people have had their information lifted in the same manner. Ancestry's transcribers also lift information and throw it out anywhere in their databases. Complaints to Ancestry go unanswered. We do not appreciate being linked by novice genealogists to people who are not related and do not do their own research. The best thing to do is to keep any trees on Ancestry as "private" so people wanting information have to contact you. If the person who contacts you proves to be a fellow descendant of your ancestors, you can open the tree for viewing just by them as a "guest", or you can just provide only the information relevant to their lines.
Every once in a while I see whole sections of my trees from Ancestry put online without being linked to me, and I suspect that the transcribers at Ancestry have done that in order to get around the "private" trees and make more information available to their subscribers.
Because of all the above, I just have been leaving messages on the message boards and on the genforums for each county and leave a list of the surnames I have researched and in what areas, then they can contact me for information. I just have become leery of sharing trees online, except with Nuestros Ranchos. Novices just find it too easy to find a name similar to their ancestor's and just add that info to their trees without doing any of the tedious research we have done.
