Mickey;
My wife had an uncle named Harold Duff, of Austin Texas. He was an oil man who did very well and lived there in Austin by a lake. He died and now all the people that were related are dead. I want to find him and add the details of his death to our genealogy records. Mickey, who would I contact there to get some information, like what is the name of the Austin news paper, local funeral homes etc. He may have died then was buried next to the rest of his family in Arkansas. He had a big mansion in Austin and some some property in Mexico.
If you or anyone else could give me some concrete leads to help, I would appreciate it very much. He died in the 1980's in Texas. If you can think of any other way to do what I want to do, let me know what you think.

Harold Duff
I am over at NARA looking up some border crossing records and saw your message so I looked him up on Ancestry.com...
I think this is his birth record:
Harold Ray Duff 19 Jul 1940 Male
Birth County: Floyd
Parents: Ollie Harold Duff, Dorris Glyde Childers
As far as his death, there does not seem to be a match on the Social Security death index for any Harold Duff born in 1940 and who died in Texas. There are the following close matches for deaths in Texas:
Ollie Harold Duff 05 November 1991 POTTER M
Chester Harold Duff 21 March 1993 HARRIS M
Harold J Duff 02 December 1993 BEXAR M
Harold Harrison Duff 03 August 1995 NAVARRO M
In addition, there are the following matches in the Social Security death index, these are the only matches in Texas and Arkansas:
Name: Harold J. Duff
SSN: 431-70-9676
Last Residence: 72444 Maynard, Randolph, Arkansas, United States of America

Jose Luis--
I looked him up in the Texas Death Index, but there does not appear to be a match. Are you sure he died in Texas, and is the name correct?

Rosalinda; What a peach to write back and try to help me with Harold E. Duff /AKA " H.E. Duff". I know that he was living in Texas when he wrote to his sister Ruth Frances. She said that he was reallly well off and his mansion in Austin seemed the size of a city block in Maywood, Calif. No, I am not sure that he died in Texas, I just assumed. I am sure that he died in the 1980's because Patsy and I had not been married too long when his sister Ruth Frances was so sad that he died. At the time, not having met him and just new to the family, I didn't think to ask for details. You know "not the right time" and all. Rosalinda, how do you check a "death index" ? Is there a site in every state ?
Also, When I came to the meeting last Saturday I felt odd at first and thought that I should maybe leave . How very, very sweet of you to be so kind as to welcome me and make me welcome. I know that you probably did it for all that came, but it ment a lot to me. Thank you, Rosalinda.
With respect,
Jose Luis Macias

Mickey in Texas
Jose,
Did you not see my message about the H. Duff I found in the SSDI that died
in 1984 in Austin, Travis County, TX?
Emilie Garcia

Forgive me, Jose, for the delay in my response.
I believe someone located a possible match for your uncle in a previous Ranchos message, but here is the Texas Death Index: http://vitals.rootsweb.com/tx/death/search.cgi . Rootsweb also has the California Death Index : http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi and the Social Security Death Index : http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi . Not all states have an online index. Another website to check is http://www.vitalsearch-worldwide.com/ . That website requires a user name and password; if you pick up the xerox copy I made for everyone at the meeting, I list them there. This site is more difficult to handle, but once you do, it can be very helpful. It's just cumbersome.
I think the H. Duff found is probably your best match, based on your family's knowledge. As I said in a previous Ranchos message, you need to be an acceptable legal party to obtain a copy of the death certificate in the state of Texas; otherwise, the state will only confirm a death date. I learned this the hard way. You have to wait until 25 years after the death has passed before you may obtain a death cerificate. Check this website: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/vs/default.shtm to see if your wife qualifies as niece of the deceased. This is not true in California, just so you know.
I was more than happy to make you welcome, Jose. I know meeting a new group of people is overwhelming, but I knew we would be a great bunch of people. I wanted to speak more to you about what you had; maybe at the next meeting. It was a pleasure to meet all of my online cousins, even if we haven't identified a relationship yet.

Mickey in Texas
Rosalinda,
It was me, Emilie, who found the SSDI records for Jose's wife's
uncle, and I posted that information you saw to the group and I also sent Jose
an e-mail at his e-mail address. I wonder if he has seen that post or my
e-mail, since he has not acknowledged them. I am pretty sure the one I
found is the person he is looking for because I traced the family to Arkansas to
check birthdates, etc., and I am looking into cemetery records to see if I can
find where he is buried.
If Jose contacts you, will you ask him if he ever got my e-mail? In
that e-mail I copied the information that I found on the SSDI.
Thanks,
Emilie Garcia
