Well it is that time again............time to do your shopping and get ready for Capirotada. Tomorrow is fat Tuesday as they say in New Orleans but for "nosotros los Mexicanos" it is time to prepare for Ash Wednesday. Not only do we prepare capirotada but we begin to prepare all the other lenten meals which means meatless pero muy sabroso. Today we purchased el pan bolillo at the panaderia La Sonorense. Tomorrow we slice the bread lengthwise and toast it in the oven. Hubby diced all the dried fruit today to use for the capirotada. He shelled the peanuts and will toast them tomorrow. He went to Supermercado Mexico today and purchased Canela, piloncillo, tomatillos, queso Oaxaca and we will be ready to roll tomorrow. For the rest of the meal we bought nopales, dried favas which in spanish are habas and the dried, powdered shrimp. We will make tortas de camaron con nopales en mole rojo. We will shell
and clean the favas and boil until soft, then will saute with chopped onions, minced garlic and diced fresh tomatoes. In the morning we have one very light breakfast as this is a day of fasting which means you have lighter than usual meals. For lunch we will have the favas and for late afternoon the tortas de camaron con nopales y mole rojo. Will have the family over in the late afternoon to share a meal and a prayer and then off to church for Ash Wednesday. These are my family's traditions from Tlachichila Zacatecas. My Zacatecan grandmother used to make capirotada and atole. I didn't
like them as a child, now that she's dead, I can't tell her how much I
enjoy my heritage that she gave me. Marge:)

I know that our first and foremost task as a Ranchos member is the research of our families, but I think it would be interesting to look at the various family customs/traditions that have been passed down through the generations, including the different foods and their variations. Is anyone else interested?

Yes please do start a recipe area in the files, start a customs area in
the files, start a music area in the files, start a cuentos area in the
files, start a baile area in the files, start a ???? in the files. But
remember we are aiming at Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. Even
though we aim at that target area doesn't mean we'll always hit it, but
with a steady aim we should hit it more often than not.
Thank you Olivia you have found your niche in the Ranchos group,
oversite of the "Nuestra Vida" project. . . i appreciate you taking
over this part of our research by volunteering to be in a complete
overview position of this new path. . . .that is what you just
volunteered for isn't it????

ps: Now do you see the posibilities? If this new path takes off and
becomes popular we can eventually create a new email list for these
kind of postings. That way if the few in the group that are not really
wanting to read this type of posting they can choose not to subscribe
to that mailing list. That, THAT is what Arturo was trying to
accomplish when he created the multiple mailing lists within the
Nuestros Ranchos site. . .diversity and the ability to choose content.

easy, just start a few catagories like the ones I suggested and have
people send in their stories related to each in relation (somehow) to
their relatives who came from our target area. In the story below you
have my mom who was from El Paso and my dad born in Santa Paula, but
the influence--my grandmother-- was from Jalisco. .
for example my mom used to make nopales in the plain style without
chile sauteed after being boiled even though from her childhood she
liked the style of them being cooked in a chile sauce. Why did she do
that? Well because my grandmother who was born in Las Animas, Santa
Maria de Los Angeles, Jalisco, was a strict mother-in-law when it came
to the wifes of her beloved sons (anyone else ever hear of how much the
mothers loved their sons?) and though this marriage survived until
death did part them there were other marriages from my uncles that
didn't because of the macho domineering type of attitude the sons of my
grandparents had about how they should be cared for by their wives. In
my marriage my wife doesn't cook for me. . .she just cooks. And for
that matter when I sometimes cook I don't cook for her I just cook. but
that wasn't the case in my parents lives. I think I said to the group
before that one day I caught my mom eating her nopales with chile not
many months after my dad died. And she was crying while she ate them. I
asked her why she was crying and she said that she was eating nopales
the way she liked them. I didn't understand and asked for an
explanation. She said my father liked them plain and for all the years
she had been married to him she hadn't eaten them like she liked them
with chile because she knew he liked them plain. Now as she was eating
them her preferred way with chile it reminded her of his death.
it was different customs and ideas and traditions that produced us and
Olivia taking the reins of a project like this is extremely important.
I don't know if you know folks or subsets of the Ranchos group
personally but if you could gather some oral history that would be
great. Oral history especially when its just stories of what happened
during a time of youth are full of the customs and traditions that
influenced us today.
basically we would need to take stories like above and put them into
each catagory and upload them into folders on the new site. No sense if
we are going to "soon" be moving over to the new site to build anything
new on the Yahoo site,

Thanks go much for sharing you menu. It has been so long since I've had the torts de camaron. My mom and grandmother used to prepare these but they're no longer living and unfortunately neither my husband or my kids appreciate seafood. As for the capirotada, I've never been able to duplicate that which was prepared by my grandmother, mother or aunts. Fortunately I have a couple of aunts who are still living and they always remember me at this time.

I invite anyone who is in the Northern California Bay Area, that when your travels bring you this way, please let me know and you can be our guests in our home. now take me to Switzerland (by air!) where my youngest daughter lives. In fact,
I will be leaving around March 23rd or so.....maybe sooner.......to stay with
her for 3 months. She is due to have her 2nd child the end of March or so
and I will be playing "grandma" for a couple or three months, returning in
June. We plan to sneak in a trip to Italy while we are in the
area.....I will have my laptop with me and will keep in
touch.

What I would like to request, again, is that ANYONE who

responses from Arturo Ramos, Maria Cortez, Alice Carrillo, Helyn, Lydia Corona
and Francisco Sevilla stating they might be interested. I do not need a
definite "yes" right now, only to get some idea as to the number of rooms to
request from the hotel. I also need to know if anyone will be
sharing a room, and the number of people for each room. I was told that
