I am descended from ancestors with the last name Lomelin. It turns out that is an italian name. Would anybody have information as to why Italians were migrating to Mexico in the 16th and 17th century?
To talk about Italians in the 16th and 17th century is not entirely accurate as the Country that we know as Italy came together in the 1800’s The Italian Peninsula consisted of many rival city-states in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Lomellini was a family of Genoese origin that spread branches of the family to Portugal and Castilla in the 16th century. This family was deeply involved in business and the transporting of goods over the seas. This Lomelin family that came to what is now Mexico was from Castilla and Genoa. Genoa was closely associated with Castilla at that time. Some other property that now belongs to Italy was aligned with Aragon.
Before Ferdinand and Isabela married, Castilla and Aragon were also rival states. Even through their marriage they had separate administrations as Ferdinand let his personal administrators manage Aragon in his absence. I believe Toribio Hernandez Arellano descends from one of these administrators.
I have written many posts in the past on this website on Carlo Lomelin and Luis Lomelin. They both came from the Lomellini Castilian branch of the Genoese family. They both considered themselves to be both from Castilla and from Genoa. Most of the Lomelin /Lomeli from Jalisco and Zacatecas descend from Carlos Lomelin. My family tree also has a line of Lomelin that descends from Luis Lomelin
