Mary,

Depending on the type of record you have at home it may not be as
accurate as the baptismal record. For the purpose of establishing a
date of birth a baptismal record would be considered the primary
source, than say a death record. The person giving the deceased's
date of birth for the death certificate was anyone but the deceased,
so they could easily make a mistake. The spelling of the name
(Refugio vs. Refugia) I wouldn't be too concerned with either. I've
seen records where the priest writes the name two different ways in
the same record! If all the names and the place and time period
match up, then it is likely the same Petra Romero you are researching.

Victor--

That's great news, since I found a couple of documents that look interesting.  I'm still searching, but could you email me his name and what steps I need to take to pay him for his services (since I'm in California)?

Thanks,

Rosalinda

Rosalinda,

If you or anyone else ever needs to research a document at AGN, I met
a gentleman (via another genealogy forum) that resides in Mexico City
and can provide that kind of services for a very reasonable fee.

I recently asked him to get me a transcription of a couple of
documents from the 1740s and I was very satisfied with his
paleographic work.  He also got and sent me via email an scanned image
of a section from a 1594 "Testamento".

Linda,

FYI, there is a free edition of Legacy Family Tree software.
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
It lacks some of the functions of the Deluxe Edition but it still does
so much, including the report I wrote about.

Trip to Jalisco, Zacatecas

Arturo,

I've been to the Ixtlahuacan del Rio parrish twice. My first time
going I called about a month prior to my trip and asked for the
specific records. The girl agreed to have them ready when I got
there. When I arrived the girl was very nice, but said she hadn't had
time to get the records, but she still had the list of names and
dates. There were quite a few and I offered to help her look through
the books. She allowed me to look through the books and get xerox
copies! The books were from the early to mid 1800's and were in
fairly good shape. The cover appeared to be a piece of leather and
for a clasp it had a string wound around a button. I had taken a gift
to her and she was very happy. I offered a donation at the end, but
she would not take it.

My second trip was not as fruitful. There were two teenagers working
there who were not very helpful and the office was full people
waiting for help. I had a fairly long list, and they were having
trouble finding the

Help With Questions

To Michael Gonsalez:

Thanks for the information you provided to Joseph below.  I had to
laugh at the part where you say "those of us who are still in
the early 1900s researching our great grand parents and their brothers and
sisters".  It made me feel so old.  I am trying to find an immigration
record for my father. He came from Zacatecas in 1913 through the border
crossing at El Paso TX.  I would so much like to see a record of his
crossing, but NARA has been no help.  The NARA office across the Sound in
Seattle said they do not have the films for border crossings at El Paso for that
period of time.  They said that their office in Berkeley, CA or someplace
had them.  Since my sister was living in San Jose at the time, she went
there and looked but was not able to complete her search and now she has moved
to Las Vegas. You said you lived in Ft. Worth.  Might you have a NARA there
that has the El Paso border crossing records for around 1913?

Thanks,

Emilie Garcia

Franciscan Covenant Records: was-Trip to Jalisco, Zacatecas

Only 1720 on are filmed and in the databases, because those are the
actual parish records of the San Luis parish.

However, Esteban Valdes Salazar refers to Franciscan convent archives
that are held at the parish when citing marriage and baptismal
records from the mid and late 1600s. They may go back further than
that.

I was just looking at the Colotlan films today and was very
pleasantly surprised to find that the majority of the records are for
indigenous people and that they are assigned to their historical
communities in the city... Tlaxcala (which was the Tlaxacltec
section), Tochopa, Sayotlan, etc.

I bet it is possible to trace the Tlaxcaltec lineages down to the
modern times.
