Description

These forum posts are from the old “Ranchos Archives” which was part of a Yahoo Groups system that operated between 2003-2006. This was a hybrid of electronic mailing lists and internet message boards. The files are “Read Only” and many of the users of the Yahoo Groups are not part of the new NuestrosRanchos membership, so keep this in mind when viewing these message posts and replies.

File - Updating Genealogy Files

Hello Everyone,

Here is another friendly reminder. Since reaching near maximum capacity
in the files area I have needed to close them to new members and place
their genealogies in YahooBriefcase. I will make up a folder in this area
for them and place a link in the "links" area of the group to these folders.
As always only group members will have access to anyone's genealogies. The public will not have access.

To prevent new members from voluntarily putting their genealogies in the files area and running us dangerously near our limit I've closed the files. They are still available for viewing by the members but additions, subtractions, and any updating needs to go through me. I'm sorry about this but it's a problem created by trying to keep this group 100% FREE to the members. If we had lots of money to blow we could purchase file space and hire an IT person to run it and just concern ourselves with Genealogy. Unfortuneately that is not the case and these limitations need to be

Thanks to everyone who entered their information. I think it will
become very benificial to all of us.

What I think is good about the database is that when you open it up,
you are given that "Search This Table" input box. If you type in a
surname or a location, it lists out all the people searching that
surname and or location. A very useful feature, be sure to try it.

The fields in the table are: Name
Email Address {optional}[but provide it anyway, jp]
Research Surnames    {Surnames you are researching.}
Research Location    {Cities, Towns, Ranchos that your ancestors are from.}
My Location    {Your current location - optional}

Immigration to Mexico from Spain

The Ministry of Culture in Spain has a website that has many of their
archive documents online. I am just now trying to figure out how to
use it. Try this link... it has instructions in English. The
webiste is only in Spanish:

http://www.ldelpino.com/aeren.html

The "catalogue" is a seven volume publication for of the passenger
lists through 1599... Below is the Library of Congress entry for the
books, as well as a link to other LOC resources on Spanish
immigration to the New World. I live in Washington DC so that is
where I will probably access these (if I can't do it online) but I
imagine other large libraries have copies as well. I believe that
the LDS has filmed the entirety of the passenger lists through the
18th Century but those films do not circulate to local Family History
Centers... so you will basically have to go to Seville or Salt Lake
City to see them unless the online access works. I am crossing my
fingers that it does.

Immigration to Mexico from Spain

I'm told these  books are available at the Salt Lake History Center but not accessable online.. you have to go there to read them and I'm told it's not a bad idea to reserve them or you may find them not available when you arrive.. This was shared by one of the volunteers at the history center here in Wa.  You have to admit it's a lot cheaper than going to Sevilla Spain!  I'm also told that not just anyone can see the books in Sevilla, they are old and delicate, you have to be a professional researcher or credentialed person..

Arturo,

Have you tried "Archivos Españoles en Red" (www.aer.es) ?
As expected, you have to register first in order to gain access.
The navigation is not very user friendly but if you try hard enough
you'll eventually learn your way around. Of course, you can also ask us!

If you want an easier route to the passenger lists, check your library
for Peter Boyd-Bowman's "Indice geobiográfico de más de 56 mil
pobladores de la América Hispánica". I think this book is currently
out of print but my understanding is that it has the same lists that
you'll find in the "Archivos General de Indias".

Immigration to Mexico from Spain

Has anyone attempted to find their ancestors' immigration records from
Spain, i.e. ship passenger lists of immigrants to Mexico, etc.

>From what I have been able to tell, the best bet is the Catalogue of
Passengers to the Indies published by the Archive General de las Indias
in Seville... Catalago de Pasageros a Indias... compiled from Libros de
Asientos (Books of Seats) of the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla)

Anybody have any better ideas, or know if these catalogues are indexed
electronically anywhere?

Francisco Zerega and Francisca Arce

I hope this helps you a bit, someone is submitting your family lines
to the Familysearch site, I'm including the one for your
grandparents but I would suggest you go to your nearest LDS history
center and they will show you there if you can access the records.
The least that can happen is you can find who is entering your
family and get together with them for the information you want.
