Manitos speech and Ladino

Victor, the only one who still speaks with that accent and uses those words
that sound strange or are unknown to Mexicans is my Aunt Emilia who is 92 years
old and is the last of her generation.  I have heard that many descendants
of 16th and 17th century Spanish settlers have discovered their Sephardic roots
which explains to them many of their ancestors particular habits, but my mother
and her other siblings would not hear of it if they were alive.  They
considered themselves "Spanish" and denied being Indian, but lately my aunt has
spoken of their Indian blood (Piro/Manso/Tewa---Pueblo tribes).  I haven't
heard that speech since my mother died in 1985 and I live far from my aunt who
has remained in the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico all her life, so I can't think
of any particular word or phrase.  I will ask my husband, since he used to
make fun of their speech (he would imitate them to their faces!) and he would
ask me where my mother got certain words that he had

can you contact the Westwood FHC and ask them if they know who you
are talking about? Maybe he is a regular patron of that FHC. I would very much
like to interview him for the NFU Podcast Project. I
contacted the "Somos Primos" group trying to find information about this
person. They had no record of him and he is not, at the present time, an
active member. They have no idea of his whereabouts.
John.

I would also like to
interview any member of Ranchos who feels they could concisely put their
research into a nutshell of 10-15 minutes in an audio file. What do you think
John Gonzalez?

Thank you for the invitation, I
appreciate it.  I feel that at the moment I am not ready
because I would like some more time to gather  more information

Meeting in Southern California

Hi Deena,

I just sent a message to the group about this.  You can respond to me directly.  To answer your questions, I'm in charge (I guess I volunteered :) ), and my message asked about three dates in February-- either the 4th, the 18th, or the 25th.  I want to hold it at a restaurant (see the message for types of cuisine), and I'm looking at possible locations along the 10 freeway, perhaps in Covina or Ontario.

So who exactly is in charge of putting a meeting together in southern
California?

Has a specific date and time been set and a location chosen?

(My vote is for anywhere along the 210 between Claremont and Pasadena, and
the best day for me is either the first or second Saturday in February.)

What's the agenda?

Will there

John,

Thanks. I actually live in Redlands, so I went down to their warehouse, which contains an
enormous amount of Spanish language books: history, fiction, art, you-name-it. The
people that work there are very intense and appear serious about what they are doing.
They have been around for 20-25 years. Some of the reference books, property of the
owner and not available for purchase, are to die for.

These people periodically go down to Mexico and purchase the books that are requested
by people, assuming the requested book is not already in stock. Obviously, these Spanish
language books are not cheap since it takes much effort and cost to find these books and
transport them back to USA. I was impressed with their organization

Manitos speech and Ladino

Emilie,

What you refer to as the peculiar speech of the manitos sounds very
similar to Ladino, the dialect spoken by the Sephardim. Have you
compared some of the words/expressions that you remember in both?

Mary Allen's successful trip

After replying, I hit some key and erased everything I had written with so much passion.  That is good; now I can take a deep breath and be calm.

I do think you are correct in your evaluation.  Wife #2 was very possessive. I am certain of it.  When Petra was a lovely 22 year old living with her madrina, she received a photo of her father with this attractive very young woman he identified as his wife.  I can only imagine what Petra felt as she noticed that the woman had not only linked arms with her father but was holding his hand, rather awkwardly, as well.  She is hanging on to him!  I would consider the photo rather indiscreet.  Most photos of the time were rather formal.  Now when I see the photo it really annoys me.

I am trying to find out who the madrina was.  I think her name was "Mariquita" but that is all I have.   After having
enjoyed a rather affluent life, when Petra moved in with her madrina, she had to help her in her little store.  I don't think she was

if any of the ranchos members would like to participate let me know. .
.this would not be an interview but a monologue of you describing your
beginning, middel and end discoveries and the process involved. . .
.call it your own genealogical research oral history. It could be in
English or Spanish. Steven? Victor? Francisco? Rosalinda? Angie? José
Roman? Arturo? Kitty/Rich? Arturo? Connie? Deena? Lorenzo? Maria? Irma?
Nena? Alicia? Helyn? Ronnie? Gloria? Gloria? Peggy? Ed? Evie? Javier?
Josie? Mickey? Carol? Carol? Jonathan? David? Alberto? los demas? the

Agapito (Augapito) ought to be really glad he bears that
name!  Somebody loved him! That only means Loved One (from
agape, the word for real love in the Greek language.

Zenobio= Cenobio(a)
Senobio(a)= Zenon=Cenon(a)=Senon(a) a variation of the
same name which roughly translated means devoted to Zeus.
Also spelled Xenon, Xenona.  I have those and
plenty of Aurelios and Aurelianos in my family.
