Hi Elysia!
About Guadalajara!
The places they told you are great, if you can stay at "El centro histórico" you can walk all of it.
It has a few of streets for tourism and walking called "La palza tapatía" between catedral and "El instituto cultural Cabañas", there is too "El mercado de San Juan De Dios" with lots of food and "artesanías" there are not problems by the day. By the night are some streets litle insecure, but you will know it before you in in they. Is not too bad, just is better to avoid the risk.
A good place to hear mariachis is "el parian" at Tlaquepaque, it is about 15 minutes by car from the center of Guadalajara. There are artesanías too.
Another place for artesanías is "El tianguis de Tonalá" The trafic is terrific, but if you have time, it worth it.
Zapopan has "La basilica" if you want to visit "La generala" (La virgen de Zapopan)
Most of the recent insecure problems in Guadalajara are with "los cárteles" between they selfs. Practically you don't notice it if you don't see the news.

Visiting the region
Hi Elysia,
I just visited the beautiful city of Guadalajara last month and stayed at the Hotel de Mendoza at the recommendation of Mickey, another NR member. The hotel was perfectly located in the heart of the historic district and across the street from El Teatro Delgollado, where my friend and I attended a marvelous symphonic concert. Directly across from the Teatro is a large plaza which has all kinds of things going on all the time. Surrounding the plaza are various municipal buildings with paintings, murals, and interesting historic displays, & the Regional Museum. At the end of the plaza is the gorgeous Cathedral. And across from the cathedral, and also to the left of it, are two plazas which have live music and are great places to people watch.
A must see is the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, located at the end of the street (a pleasant walk about 1/4 mile) which is to the right of the Teatro, as you face it. This is a world heritage site which has probably the greatest, most amazing Orozco mural on the ceiling. Of course, shoppers enjoy going to Tlaquepaque
We never witnessed any problems and found everyone to be very helpful & friendly. You should have a wonderful time. I will be thinking of you and wishing I was back.

Visiting the region
I'm glad to hear that Guadalajara is still beautiful. With what we hear up here about Mexico, we wonder what places we have been to there are like now.
Back in the late 60s and early 70s we would go see my husband's aunt in Mexico City and we would take side trips to see pre-columbian ruins and the pyramids out of town, also to Cuernavaca where Cortez had a castle, and to Acapulco. In Guadalajara we too enjoyed a concert and the other art venues. I do recall lying on a bench in some building to better enjoy the mural on the ceiling. We didn't visit Tlaquepaque, but when I was younger my father did take us there on one of their trips.
