Research Helps

Victor,

The only thing I know about [Film Number] Field is what it says in help:

"If a record contains both a batch number and a film number, then use
only the batch number for your search. Film number searches are valid
only when there is no batch number."

And as far as [Serial/Sheet Number] I have only ever seen it to be
[00]. So I don't think that is any help.

Personally, I have never used either field in my searches.

Angie

P.S. I knew you were jk ... ;-)

Guadalupe(s) born in 1932

Alicia,

Yes there was some signifiance in that name. December 1931 was the
400 year anniversary to the Virgin de Guadalupe. So I imagine all
the children in the early part of 1932 were given that name. Funny
you should bring this up since about a week ago, I was talking with
my uncle who was born in 1931 and has the name Guadalupe.
Anyway...someone else started talking to us and he asked my uncle
were you born in the year of the Guadalupe's. My uncle laughed and
said he was born before. Later when the man left, I asked my uncle
what was that all about. He explained to me that most of the
children born in 1932 were given the name of Guadalupe in honor of
the Virgin de Guadalupe.

Hope this helps...

Year 1932, Virgen De Guadalupe

Regarding my earlier question about a particular significance in the year 1932 of the name Guadalupe. I just googled Virgen de Guadalupe and I found a web site with a lot of information about the Virgen but I think I might have a response to my question about some significance to the year 1932. The Virgen appeared to Juan Diego in the year 1531 and maybe they were commemorating the 400 year anniversary of her appearance. Tlachichila belongs to the Diocese of Guadalajara and I know that our lady is much revered in that region. Has anyone else encountered this naming phenomenon for this year in your area of research?

Angie,

Thanks. I was just joking!
And speaking about research tips, I don't have a clear idea what's the
purpose of the fields [Serial/Sheet Number] and [Film Number] in the
IGI search page. Have you found any use for those?

I've tried entering data into the [Film Number] field in a similar
fashion to the [Batch Number] as some recommend field but nothing happens!

Alicia and the prieshood records of the church

Jose Luis,

I'm sorry, I did not even think of that but as we all now know it's very possible and I'm sure you're right there will not be any formal church records. As we all know in the early Catholic Church the church was very powerful. For that and for many other reasons Mexico had the Cristero Rebellion. My mom and aunts tell stories about how dominant the parish priests were to the point of naming the children. Mom said that when I was born she took me to have me registered because my dad was in El Norte and the priest told her that my name should be Juana and that it could not be Alicia because my name was not the name of a saint. Mom said she told the priest well there is now a new saint and it's Alicia and she will be named Alicia.

Yesterday while perusing records for baptisms I came across about 6 months worth of baptisms where all the children were named Guadalupe both male and female and this was in 1932. It was Jose Guadalupe, Maria Guadalupe, Tomas Guadalupe, Mariana

Who's going to the Hispanic Genealogy Symposium in DC???

I'm registered! Anyone else coming to the conference? Hope to see you
there.

Church Records/Ordenes de los ingresos al sacerdocio

Wow that was quick, It's amazing what you get when you put it out there.

I have been trying to recruit different family members into geneaology. I was supposed to meet with a tia today up at the Fremont FHC. I went yesterday to do my research so that if we both went today I could dedicate all my time to training her. She called this morning to say she couldn't make it but while I had her on the phone I grilled her regarding some records I found yesterday. She was born in Jalpa Zacatecas and her maternal grandmother and my mom's grandfather were brother and sister so that makes her my Tia Josefina. Her grandmother Herlinda Olmos married J. Refugio Valenzuela of Jalpa Zac and they had a son named Adalberto who's birth/baptism records I found yesterday. She was telling me about his family of brothers and sisters and said he and two of his brothers were priests and that Adalberto had spent 10 years in Rome at the Vatican.

This along with other stories I have heard led me to wonder

Alicia and the prieshood records of the church

Alicia;  I think your question about if there are records of the births of children born to priests and nuns is brilliant !  I can imagine that there probably are no formal records unless they were entered as part of the normal birth/christaning of the Parish. Then they would use their own given names instead of the names taken as part of the new life they became when they took their vows.
I do remember achialogists finding the remains (bones) of new borns in the catacombs benieth some churches in France. Human nature is what it is, and the practice of putting newborns to die down there must have been hard for the nuns, but necessary.  Ergo, as you postulated, it may have been that they had them baptized before abandoning them. There are catacombs beneigth many catherials in Mexico and your theory does have merit. It could also be that some of the "Hijo natural" entries were actually babies born to the local clergy and brought at their request by a parishoner.
   I would be most
