Has anyone had any experience in researching records in The San Judas Tadeo church in Villanueva, Zacatecas? My wife and I are planning to visit there this summer. Her Corvera and Marquez ancestors lived there. I'm just curious as to how approachable the church staff would be for us to see their old written records. Thank you so much for any advice you can offer.
San Judas Tadeo, Villanueva
I also have family from there and plan to visit sometime, possibly this summer too.
Please tell us about your experience after you visit.
Villanueva
Hi, Just a followup on San Judas Tadeo Church, Villanueva; My in-laws and I visited the church 2 days ago. The church office is at the side of the church. The young lady at the desk was very pleasant and willing to look things up but the resources that they have on bautismos and matrimonios are limited. The church records are not digitized and apparently are not completely indexed. I had a couple of names and dates for matrimonios in the 1830s but she could not find it in the church index, even though I could see it online through Ancestry.com and familyserach.com copies of records. I think they would have let us see the originals if they could have found it in their index. Its worth a visit to see the church if nothing else. Beautiful to see on the inside.
The presidencia office of the municipio is on the opposite corner from the church. They have death records. We went there too late in the day to see anything though. It was on a Friday and I had to catch a flight out the next day. My in-laws are going to go back next week to check what they have on those.
Just a word of caution on exploring the roads out of town south of Villanueva, you'll want to stay clear of those unless you have friends or family to tell you where not to go. Im told that cartel people are out there.
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the update. Sounds like a great experience.
My in-laws live south of Villanueva. They can show me around and keep us out of trouble.
