Dear list,
Ok, this is way toooo freaky! I posted 4 the 1st time last week with the encouragement of Alicia Carillo. My Post was in reference to my mother, Maria de Jesus Bravo & Gparents Ladislao Bravo & Maria Tinoco from La Ribera Jalisco. Separately & without mention in my post, I have also been searching (about 2 years) 4 info on my paternal gparents, Bernardino Lopez & Donaciana Gutierres from Guanajuato. Last evening I received an email from Erlinda (Linda in BC) providing me listings for them! Yes, that's excitement you detect in my e-voice! I just wanted to publicly thank Nuestros Ranchos, Alicia and of course, Linda in BC!

Novice's 1st attempt
Michael,
Glad we could help... you are now on your way to the wonderful addiction of genealogy ! We do it for the love our our families and to honor our ancestors and to reclaim our past for the future generations.. I got started when my mothers brother asked if I knew how he could find out about thier father, Marcelino Gutierrez, who had died when my uncle was 7 years old.. now I'm waiting for the DNA for that Gutierrez line and have taken them back to abt 1650... Lots of records, time, patience and lots of prayers got me there...

Send In Your Introductions: was-Novice's 1st attempt
thanks Mike for your words and encouragement. There is a lot of
information available for those that seek. . .my meaning is that if you
just joined the list you should consider sending in your Introduction.
Send in your questions and comments, in other words get involved. There
have been many new people join the group in the last few weeks but only
a small percent of you have sent in your introductions. You will only
get something out of this group if you put something into it. We as a
group are here to help you get started. Once you have a "start" you need
to take the bull by the horns and work your own research. In time you
can join the group that shares what they have learned to help others get
their start. We should constantly be nurturing new people to later help
nuture the next wave of new members.
and Mike that excitement you have is what many of us still have when we
discover a new relative. I describe it as my heart doing a back flip!
great going and hope you make many other discoveries!

Accurate Transcribing:
At first, I transcribed the names just as they were written, but that made
it hard to keep track of everybody. I've seen Jauregui spelled at least a
dozen different ways. Even dividing my database into two ways of spelling
Quezada made it too hard to keep track of families so for my database I
standardized the spelling. However, in the notes, I indicate the original
spelling of the name as it appears in the document from which I obtained the
name. It works for me.
Sometimes more than accurate transcribing is necessary. There's no
substitute for research experience. For example, I had no idea when I
started researching Nochistlan that Dionicio and Leonicio are often used
interchangeably as are Hermenegildo and Esmeregildo. And I remember
thinking that Rita should be Pieta. It was hard to tell by reading the
scrip of the curate; but as time went by, I found that Rita was actually
quite common whereas Pieta was non-existant for that time frame.
One problem I have that I'm not sure how to fix is that I started out using
the accent marks and the tilde, but when I sent out a GEDCOM file, the
computer would misread everything -- either leaving out letters or
substiting other symbols for the accented letters. I finally went through
my entire database a few years ago and eliminated all the special marks.
However, it's my understanding that the programs are better now, and one can
forward a GEDCOM file without the special letters being distorted. The only
problem is that my database is getting rather large, and the task of
restoring all those special marks seems daunting. (Every José and every
María. Every Nochistlán. Yikes!) Does anyone else have this dilemna?
