Hello everybody,
Although I am 56 years old, I am the "Benjamin member" of Nuestros Ranchos
..com
I am searching the ancestry of my grandfather, Jose Michel Vazquez
(1897-1990), married to Luz Lopez Pelayo (1898-1984). I believe both were
born in Autlan, Jalisco. My findings so far have been very modest. My
grandfather was son of Ricardo Michel Becerra and Guadalupe Vazquez. Ricardo
Michel Becerra's father was Pio Michel (don't know his maternal last name),
married to Gabriela Becerra (don't know her maternal last name). All of the
from Jalisco. Do you know if there are internet sites in the state of
Jalisco where I could search for birth and marriage records of my ancestors
? Or is this something that has to be done at the physical government
premises ?
I was navigating in the "Archivo General de Indias" provided here in
nuestrosranchos.org and found an official document appointing the Spaniard
JUAN MICHEL as "Regidor de Guadalajara, Jalisco. This document was dated in
1561.
If someone is interested, you may visit:
http://pares.mcu.es/ParesBusquedas/servlets/ImageServlet
This site includes: "58 paginas manuscritas detallando la confirmación del
oficio de regidor a Juan Michel".
I wonder if Juan Michel is in any way linked to my family...
Thank you in advance for any tips you can provide me.

Felipe:
As Lina mentioned in her message to you, the following record is the key to getting back another generation in your Michel lineage. Because the names of the parents were not extracted into IGI, you will need to go to a family history center and order the film to read the actual record.
If you have not yet done so, seeing old records like that (even on microfilm) is very exciting. You should be able to scan or at least photocopy it for your own records...

You can find your nearest family history center on familysearch.org
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp
While you are there, I would suggest you order some of the other films with baptisms, etc. from Autlan as well so you can read the original documents for your other ancestors as well. There is often a lot of interesting information, i.e. the names of the ranchos where they lived, the names of their padrinos, and often their occupations, etc.

As Arturo mentioned this marriage record could take you back another generation unless they were both previously married. The records for previous married people don't always include parents unfortunatley. That's another reason it's important to record padrinos and witness's, sometimes they are the clue that finds you the correct family ties. I know once you read your first family record you'll be hooked just like the rest of us, finding our own information is much more exciting than just having someone else tell you names and dates.
I look forward to hearing from you after you've read your own very first family record.

Erlinda,
Yes, I am eager to obtain and read my first family record. Hope I can tackle
that soon.
I have mixed feelings, on one hand I am excited with an upcoming trip to
Spain --a solid month and a bit-- and on the other hand a little frustrated
because of the cosequent temporay suspension of my family search. I know I
should not complain, the records will not go anywhere else while I am away
from home.
Hasta la vista ¡

Felipe:
filminas van a estar esperando.
van a estar esperandote.
(CorGoMiUri).
Regresa pronto

Arturo,
Yes, I have now a couple of Family History Center addresses here in Mexico
City. So far no one is answering the telephone. Since they are not far from
where I live, I plan to visit them next week to order the microfilm. I do
not have it in my hands yet, but I am already excited ¡
Mil Gracias ¡

Felipe:

IGI and VRI
Felipe:
IGI is the International Genealogical Index and VRI is the Vital Records Index, both databases compiled and maintained by the Church of Latter Day Saints. They allow you to search through millions of baptism and marriage records for a particular name, limiting your search to a particular location or time period.
You will note that our site has a FILMS database that is organized by State and Municipality in Mexico which then links to the respective BATCH NUMBER in IGI or VRI where the records have been extracted. This allows you to "browse" the entire records on that particular film, or limit your search solely by mother's last name or father's first name or in any number of different ways that FAMILYSEARCH.ORG will not allow unless you enter a BATCH NUMBER.
I suggest you download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide which you can find in the FILES-REFERENCE MATERIALS section of the site as well as the Finding Ancestral Records in Mexico Guide found in the same section.
There are actually lots of useful guides, including instructions on using the IGI, transcribing church records, etc. in that section of the site which are very useful for beginners and experienced genealogists alike.

Arturo,
Thank you for your answer and valuable advice. I will follow your

IGI and VRI
Hello Sylvia,
I received your note. Thank you.
I also answered another note from you inviting me to join the CorGoMiUri
site. I have been a member --not very active though-- since quite a while.
My primary interest is to search mi ancestry, and I have not figured out how
to do it through your site. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers ¡¡
