I am absolutely NOT posting an ad. I was merely posting an inquiry to my fellow genealogists as to the validity of this site.

As I mentioned before, I stumbled across it by accident and thought it was too good to be true. It seemed extremely easy (too easy), yet beneficial. Being the skeptic that I am, I was hoping to gain some feedback from anyone that might have used the site before offering any of my own research.

Linda, Esther has been a member for 7 years 10 weeks. It is not an ad. If
all of the NuetrosRanchos members had their tree on that site a lot of
people's missing info could be found much easier. I have mentioned the site
before and it is my preferred. I use Ancestry, Myheritage, rootsweb, and
Genoom. Nothing is better than Geneanet in my opinion.

I use Ancestry, WorldConnect (rootsweb), and a couple of others, but I haven't tried Geneanet. Some of my relatives are switching to MyHeritage from Ancestry and swear by that.

I am currently using the MyHeritage software, but have not upgraded to the premium on-line service. I enjoy the fact that it automatically searches other users of the software for matches. I have actually found others with the same family lines. This part is nice, since you can take a "sneak peak" at the other tree, then make contact with the owner to confirm any data. The only down fall I am seeing is that many of the individuals that are using the software don't seem to be serious genealogists.

I still regularly upload my family tree updates to Ancestry.com and continue to receive inquiries from others through this route.

I no longer share my trees with Ancestry and MyHeritage because, as you said, too many people are not serious genealogists, don't view microfilms, etc. all they do is copy over other people's trees when only the name and region might be the same, but it is definitely not their ancestors. Instant family trees, I call that. I made one of my trees "private" on Ancestry after I found that someone "stole" my grandfather and all his ancestors. I tried to contact that person, and they did not respond. She has a cousin who does have the right ancestor.

I still get inquiries even from my "private" trees, since people can use the Ancestry "contact the owner of this tree" feature. Usually I find that we have common ancestors eight generations back.

I have been doing some of the research from my resources (transciptions I have done) for my cousins who normally just depend on what they find online, though I have to say that some of them do come up with info I haven't found such as from library archives online. One feature my cousins like on MyHeritage is the relationship search. From that they found that their parents were distand cousins, and that some ancestors were close cousins.

Well, said. I, too, have encountered similar problems. When I have
contacted a Family Tree "owner", I have discovered too many times that no
sourcing has occurred; and by admission of the "owner" is a copy of
someone's non-sourced family tree. It is discouraging, so much so that I am
reluctant to share my trees on-line.

How long have you been using this site? Another member of Nuestros contacted me privately and informed me that one of the main contributors (via other genealogists) is a professor at UNAM, Professor Javier Sanchiz.

If this is as great as it's beginning to sound, I would have to agree with you......if we all submitted our work, we would cut our work in half! I have spent over 10 years compiling data only to find out that someone else was busily compiling the same information!

I have only been here 1yr 19wks. Javier Sanchiz had begun his research on
Veracruz and it started to encompass other areas of Mexico. Therefore
whatever he has that includes our area ties into people or surnames of the
area of his study. His UNAM page can be found at One of the reasons I
like Geneanet so much is the popularity of it worldwide. I have found trees
from Spain and Mexico that aren't found on other sites. At the same time I
have found some trees on other sites not found on Geneanet. Using all free
sites would actually be the best way for all of us to help each other out.
Especially since all that has to be done is sign up and import and export
ged files.

I went to the website just for a quick check and tried to look up, under
origins of surnames, "Gonzalez"' and it came back with " no data
available"
Gonzalez, one of the most popular Spanish surnames and they don't have any
data???

I don't believe I'll be using this website.

John, that is because the source is : An etymological dictionary of family
and Christian names - By William Arthur - 1857. I did a search of Gonzalez
in Jalisco and there were 224 matches.
