My parents are both from Jalpa, Zacatecas. I have been able to trace three branches of my mother’s ancestry to Bartelomo Viramontes. In fact, he is mentioned as a common ancestor in many marriage dispensation in the 1860’s that involves a Viramontes in a Jalpa marriage. I almost believe that he is the common ancestor for all Viramontes(es) that have a connection to Jalpa. Of course, that may not really be the case. My guess is that Bartelomo Viramontes did not originate from Jalpa. I would really appreciate any guidance or information on the origin of this ancestor. Based on my best calculations, he was likely born in the mid to late 1700’s. Some of his children were: Cristobal Viramontes, Jose Maria Viramontes, Gregoria Viramontes, and Juan De Dios Viramontes.
Thank you,
Maria-Elena Lopez Viramontes

Re: Need Origin for BARTOLOME Viramontes
I just wanted to correct the misspelling of BARTOLOME Viramontes name in my previous message. It is not spelled Bartelomo.

I was not successful in finding any of the names you mentioned in either the IGI, or with the search screens in the new Family Search.
Do have have more detail? perhaps a film citation in one of the Jalpa films currently online?
Also, there are not many films for Jalpa in the Family History Library. Was Jalpa associated with a nearby town? If so, there might records from a chapel at Jalpa with the church records of that town.
I noticed an older Nuestros Ranchos posting where it is suggested that Viramontes and Miramontes are variations of the same name, with Miramontes being the older one.

Hi George and Maria Elena:
Jalpa like the area around it had borders as to their jurisdictions chnaged all the time. You could
find people from Jalpa going to Nochistlan, Calvillo, Huanusco, Tlatenango. From around the mid
XVIII century Jalpa was under the jurisdiction of Tabasco, Zac. just a bit north from it. I did learn
at one point it was part of Juchipila but even there records are few. Hope this gives some insight.
this area is very tricky as borders keep changing and people often travel throughout the area.

George,
I'm also a descendant of Bartolome Viramontes, and I've not found much about the Viramontes line beyond the Jalpa informacion matrimonial images. For instance, in image 447 of Jalpa Información Matrimonial 1864-1868, you will find two family tree, one referencing the Viramontes:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/image/show#uri=http%3A//pilot.familysear…
I believe that La Villita was established as a community sometime in the late 1700/early 1800s and people from different parts of the region started settling there around then. I have seen people from Nochistlan, Teocaltiche, and Tabasco mentioned in the IMs. I have not seen many references to Tlaltenango or to the west of Jalpa; mostly southeast and south.
I'm going thru the online Tabasco birth records of 1747-1776 and will let you know if I find anything.

Daniel, George, and Arturo,
Thank you for giving me your insight on this. My first choice was going to be to start looking in Tlaltenango so maybe I'll save it for a different stage of my ancestry research.
Arturo, I am going to the Nueva Galicia conference in April and and I'm looking forward to listening to your presentation.

Maria-Elena,
I'm from Jalpa and I currently have records that stop at Bartolome Viramontes. My gg grandfather Jose Maria Flores Flores was married to Benigna Godoy Viramontes, daughter of Carmen Viramontes Pereida, married to Felipe Godoy. Carmen's parents were Jose Maria Viramontes married to Paula Pereida. Jose Maria's father was also a Jose Maria. This latter Jose Maria's father was Bartolome Viramontes. I'd be interested in comparing other decendents you have of Bartolome.

Francisco Godoy Viramontes
I'm trying to find Bonifacio Godoy Gonzalez but I know four siblings were born in Jalpa and three were born in Tlatenango. I found Benigna and Francisco father's birth certificate in the Tabasco film. Felipe died an elderly man in 1902 in Jalpa. The Godoy trail is the one I am after but it's good to run into a prima.

Juan,
I also have Felipe Godoy Ledesma + Carmen Viramontes Pereira in my family tree. I'm not surprised that the Godoys and Viramontes families married one another, as these families have origins in the Tlaltenango area going back to the early 1700s.
Can you give more information about Bonifacio Godoy Gonzalez, including when he lived/married/died and who his parents were?
The Godoy Gonzalez family that I have is Francisco Godoy Viramontes + Pragedis Gonzalez Duran. I am aware of three children for Francisco & Pragedis: Hilario, Jose Jesus, and Maria (but I don't have their baptisms, just approximate date of birth based on marriage information). Pragedis Gonzalez Duran is the daughter of my direct ancestor Lucas Gonzalez Casillas.
Arturo
Godoy Gonzalez
Arturo,
Felipe Godoy was born 9/15/1820 (I believe you gave me this date) and died on 12/16/1902 in (La Villita), Jalpa, Zacatecas.
Benigna and Francisco also had a sister named Prisciliana.
Benigna was my gg grandfather Jose Maria Flores Flores' 2nd wife.
Francisco Godoy and his 2nd wife Praxedis Gonzalez Duran, had the following children:
Hilario GG was born 11/4/1884
Maria GG was born 10/11/1886
Jose Jesus GG was born 1/24/1888
Froilan GG

The Information I've Gathered on Godoy Gonzalez Siblings
The following is a list of baptismal or birth civil records for the Godoy Gonzalez Children:

1886 Maria Godoy Gonzalez born in Jalpa
1888 Jesus Godoy Gonzalez born in Jalpa
1891 Anatleto Godoy Gonzalez born in Jalpa

Arturo G vs. Arturo R
Hi Maria-Elena,
I think you got me and Arturo Ramos confused. But as he's the Tlaltenango expert, you should pick his brain to see if he has any suggestion about Viramontes around there.
It is a shame that the records in the southern end of the Juchipila Canyon are missing records for these years.
Best of luck and look forward to sharing more information in the future.
Arturo Gonzalez
Arturo G vs. Arturo R
Arturo G.,
I am really embarrassed especially since we have emailed in the past. I was really throwing my original question about Bartolome Viramontes for both of us.
I hope to connect with you later regarding this mystery.
Maria-Elena
Arturos, Bartolomes, Miramontes and Viramontes
Maria-Elena:
Arturo and I are actually friends who were introduced to each other in Washington DC last year by a mutual friend of ours, before I moved up here to Boston. It is a small world indeed.
My theory on the Viramontes name is that it is a variation of the Miramontes name which is endemic in Tlaltenango and in fact, I would venture to say that all of the Miramontes in Mexico are descendants of the singular Juan de Miramontes who migrated from Spain in the late 1500s and settled in Tlaltenango, marrying Maria de (Haro y) Saucedo.
The name Bartolome is also endemic in that family. If you look in my folder, you will see there is a preview of my book that includes the name index and you will see that Bartolome Miramontes appears on many occasions throughout the period covered by the book. If you are back with Bartolome Viramontes in the mid-1700s I think you might be able to make the leap over to Tlaltenango by matching the name to the date.
I will try to look through all of the Bartolome Miramontes entries and see if there are possible matches.
Re: Arturos, Bartolomes, Miramontes and Viramontes
Thank you Arturo R. I purchased your book and I think my parents will find it so interesting. I might need to buy them their own copy. I did notice that Bartolome Miramontes was mentioned in your book as a witness in some registrations, but without knowing much else, I couldn't assume that it was the same ancestor.
