Mr/Ms Hernandez ---------(sorry I don't know your name, you did not sign your post),
I checked Family Search for all the Villalpandos/Vialpandos listed for Spain and they all originated in Valladolid, not in Cadiz. The only entry for a Vialpando for Cadiz is one submitted by someone in New Mexico, and not from an official baptism record. So, I think they mistook Jerez de la Frontera for Jerez, Zacatecas.
I did see a tree submitted to Family Search by someone in NM that listed a Juan Vialpando's (married to a Romero) birthplace as "Villa de Leon", not Villa de Conil. Is that Juan your ancestor? What other document do you have?
I did not find a Villa de Leon in Zacatecas. Leon is in Guanajuato, and on the Family Search list there are dozens of Vialpando/Villalpando there starting in the early 1600s. It looks like the first Vialpandos in Mexico arrived in the early 1600s in Mexico City (Mexico State) and moved to Puebla, next to Mexico state, then moved up north to the states of Guanajuato, Aguascalientes and Jalisco. There are a few listed for Durango and Zacatecas, but not too many. I don't see them listed for any other states, except New Mexico.
My husband's Villalpandos were from Aguascalientes and Jalisco in the 1600s, and the state of Guanajuato is right next door, to the east. The city of Leon (villa de Leon) is close to other major cities of Jalisco and to the west and north is Aguascalientes. Farther to the west is Zacatecas.
Maybe way, way back your Vialpando lines are connected to my husband's Villalpandos.
I don't know the names of your Vialpandos so I couldn't look for them in the records for Leon, Guanajuato or Jerez, Zacatecas.

Do you have information on Tomas Villalpando who married (1) Maria de Vargas (m 1677), and later (2) Maria de Jaen (or de Sotelo) (m 1690), in Aguascalientes? There are several children by the first wife, and numerous others by the second. Apparently he is from Leon, Guanajuato.

Maria de Vargas was also known as Maria de Heredia. I have not identified her parents yet, but
is probably related to Angela and Maria de Heredia daughters of Alonso de Heredia and
Antonia de Caceres who later married Bartolome Garcia de Leon.

I uploaded a doc on my Vialpando line. All are from New Mexico except Juan de Villa el Pando that married Urusla Olaes and his son Juan de Villalpando that is supposed to be from Jerez.

George,
No, I don't know about a Tomas Villalpando. I only recently found out that my husband's gggg-grandparents, Nicolas Garcia and Maria de San Juan were not Indians, they were espanoles, and Maria de San Juan did have a surname that the records didn't always include. I found so many couples named Nicolas Garcia and Maria de San Juan, and I picked the wrong one. She used several surnames---Trillo, Villalpando, Belasco, etc. We finally found out that she was born to Antonio Trillo and Mariana Villalpando in Aguascalientes. Mariana's parents were Diego Villalpando and Ysabel Losano de Gardea. Mariana had siblings named Gertrudis, Joseph and Christobal, but no Tomas, not that I have found. I didn't find any of my husband's in Leon, Guanajuato.
The reason I was checking the Family Search indexes for Vialpando/Villalpando/Billalpando in various states in Mexico is that one of our members wanted to know where Villa de Leon was, and I saw on the index that most of the Vialpando/Villalpando originated in Mexico City, then Puebla, then went north to Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and only a few to Zacatecas and Durango. There are dozens of Vialpandpo/Villalpando in the lists for Leon, Guanajuato.
Have you checked the archives for 18th century New Mexico? I didn't know there were so many Vialpandos there, I had only looked in Mexico. There are lots in Spain in the Valladolid records, and the Villalpando there is between that Leon (Zaragoza?) and Valladolid. There is also a Villa de Pando in Uruguay near Leon de Canelones.
Oh, by the way, thank you a million times for extracting those IMs from Aguascalientes. I found many of my husband's ancestors there. I can't read the images due to my eyesight and unfamiliarity with that script and language and abbreviations.

Thank you very much for the reply. I haven't had a chance to look at the early Leon, GTO records yet, but I plan to do so.
By the way, I'm working on the next installment of Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations. My goal is to get to the 1740s (I'm in the mid 1720s at the moment) when the marriage records are consistently more complete and provide the names of the parents of the couple being married. When done, I'll post these with the others.
I've gotten side tracked on another problem: the Lara family of San Francisco del Rincon, GTO.

I have a translation of a marriage document that was done in 1694 that the name of the Villa was not totally legible...it says Juan de Villa el pando native of La Villa de Con(il?). I have cousins that our great great grandfathers were brothers that have reserched for many years also and most reserchers have interpreted this as La Villa de Leon...I am new on here so have not yet posted my ged.
Yes that tree on family search is my line...I can upload the actual marriage document so you can take a look but is hard to read.

The document reads
The margin reads “Nuevo México. . .1718”
“ Ambrocio de Villalpando vesino originario de la villa de Santa Fe
yjo lexítimo de Juan de Villalpando originario de la villa de Géres, lla
difunto y de Ana María Truxillo vesina de dha villa de Santa Fe. . .contraer matrimonio según orden de Nstra. Sta. Madre Yglesia con María Romero vesina de la villa de Santa Fe yja lexítima de Juan Romero lla difunto y de Pascuala Básques vesinos de dha
villa. . .
Based on all my years of research, I like many others; doubt this “Villa de Géres” was Xérez de la Frontera. I have seen so many records and every time it mentions Xérez, Spain is always named Xéres de la Frontera and usually makes a mention of Reynos de Castilla. In reality I believe Juan de Villalpando was from Villa de Xérez in Zacatecas like so many New Mexican families can trace their origins to northern Mexico. There seems to be a problem with researchers jumping into conclusions; such as listing the Villalpando from Xérez, Cádiz, Spain.
I am no expert in New Mexican genealogy, but have touched basis and some research. My step-grandmother is from Albuquerque and descends from all the common families: Martín Serrano, Vaca, Romero, Roybal, Vásquez de Lara, Padilla, Montes y Vigil, Lucero de Godoy, and the Marqueses of Villalmayor. Through her direct paternal line she is Durán y Chávez. Nonetheless, it does interest me because many families have ties to Nueva Galicia and northern Mexico.
You can actually purchase the Spanish Archives of New Mexico in a two volume set for around $90 at most. I believe it’s worthy to stand in any investigator’s library.

Thank you george...I have the 2 volume set on that i downloaded it free from the Arichives. com website. I have another document that is a interpretation from the Diligencias matrimonias of Fray Angelico Chavez. Thats where i got the Villa de Con(il?) from, I got the original document that he interpreted it from the Archives at Santa Fe, however the testimony of the bride and groom are missing. I have a woman at the Archdioces of Santa Fe looking for a complete copy for me.
Thats awesome how you could makes sense of what was written in the margin..thank you so much, I can continue my research in Zacatecas...Oh and all the familys mentiond in your post I am also related to...so i wonder where ours ties together.
Amalia Hernandez Arias
To Amalia
Amalia,
You actually downloaded all the images from the two volumes in the Spanish Archives in Santa Fe?
Or is it a transcription of the records there? Can you give me the link?
Also, in the meantime, can you send the incomplete copy of the original record where it says that Juan Villalpando was from "Villa de Leon" to a file in Nuestros Ranchos? Or if you have the .jpg file in your computer, can you send it to me, George and Daniel? It was Daniel that translated the Ambrosio document for us.
You can't send attachments to NR, only links, or you can upload a file to Nuestros Ranchos.
I have Fray Angelico's book "Origins of New Mexico Families", and the transcription for the marriage of Juan de Villa El Pando in there says simply that he was from "La Villa de Leon", not from any Villa de Conil or whatever. I do see though that he gives Juan's wife's name as Ana Maria Romero, when the marriage of his son Ambrosio gives his wife's name as Ana Maria Trujillo. I kept wondering why the family trees say his wife was a Romero. Now I know where they got that. I wish I could see Juan's marriage document from 1694, that Fray Angelico quoted as his source.

In the origins he refrences the Diligencias Matrimonias...thats what I uploaded also that says Villa de Con(il?) so i dont know where he got Leon. Yes that is the link to the pdf books, I got so many free refrences there including entire rolls of Census for the United State all in PDF form. Love that site!!!

RE ONMF..Diligencias
Amalia,
Yes, I know that Fray Angelico referenced the DM for the Villapando in his book (he quoted his sources as footnotes). He read the entry as "Villa de Leon" as he stated in his ONMF book. Someone else who did a transcription for the PDF files read the entry as Villa de Con (il?). I said in another post that I thought it read Villa de Leon (not Con) and the "il?" is an abbreviation for iho legitimo, since the names of his parents appear immediately after.
I was hoping that either George or Daniel would verify what I think it really says. You said you were waitng for the complete copy of the DM or Marriage, so you don't have even the part that says "Villa de Leon" that someone thinks says "Villa de Con (il?)"?
The two links you sent before were both for Ambrosio; I didn't see the image for Juan Villalpando that supposedly says "Villa de Con (il?)".

I too have Villalpando on my mother's side. I'm still not sure where they came from but they appear
in Sierra de Pinos in 1751 where they baptize a daughter. They are linked to Matehuala, SLP and
Guadalajara, Jal. Very probably they were merchants/commercialist.
My 6th great grandfather Capt. Joseph Victor de Camino y Trasgallo married Josefa Gertrudis
Fernandez de Villalpando, she was baptized in San Matias, Sierra de Pinos, Zac on 16 Jan 1762
and married in the same place 30 Nov 1783. She was daughter of Joseph Nolasco Fernandez de
Villalpando, (I suspect he was a merchant and a peninsular) and Maria Manuela Mendez-Hidalgo
who appears to be linked to Santa Maria del Rio, SLP.
Josefa's brother Joseph Maria Fernandez de Villalpando worked closely with Francisco de Fagoaga,
I marques del Apartado in Mexico City and Puebla.
All this Villalpando talk recently has sparked my interest in following this line that I know so little about.
any help is appreciated.
