I know that others have asked in the past, so I apologize. But I just want to make sure if Family Tree DNA is the way to go. Specifically, were people happy just doing the y-DNA test, which appears to be the cheapest test. Also, which y-DNA test is really necessary: y-DNA 12, 25 or 37?

My father is interested in doing the y-DNA test. As for our lineage, while I've had great success in searching various family lines from Tlaltenango (ex. Gonzalez, Arteaga, etc), I've had no luck with our surname: Pineda/ Pinedo.

I've only been able to back to go back to my grandfather's father, Nicanor Pinedo, who married twice in Tlaltenango. Based on his marriage records, his parents were Pedro Pinedo and Pioquinta Cardoza. But I've not been able to find any birth records for Nicanor Pinedo or marriage record for Pedro Pinedo and Pioquinta Cardoza, so I'm stuck.

So maybe we'll learn something from the y-DNA test.
