Perhaps someone knows a "next step" and can help me continue to build a
family tree. I am looking for an ancestor, "Manuel Carrillo Buezo" born
sometime in the late 1700's. He is my great, great, great grandfather. He
had three children (perhaps more and I have yet to find them), with two
born in 1818 and 1826 and the third birth unknown at this time. This leads
me to assume his birth in the late 18th century. At this time I have been
going through the church records of Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco and not
finding his baptism yet. It is family lore that the first Carrillo in our
family arrived in Tamazula from Burgos, Spain. I do not know how true that
is. But if there is no record of Manuel Carrillo in the Tamazula church
records, then he must have come from some other region of Mexico or from
Spain. *What would be the next step if that is the direction I must
follow?* His
wife, "Lugarda Ochoa Moxic" (probably Moxica) has yet to be looked for at
this time and her information may be very useful in this search should I
find her records. ****
** **
I also have found that some records are unreadable because the ink has
faded so badly. I would hate to think that my ancestor is identified on
those pages and I will never see it.****
** **
I also noted that the number of mulatos baptized in Tamazula are abundant
in the late 1700's and absent in the 1800's. Were there efforts to
eliminate these distinctions in post-colonial Mexico?****
Thank you for any help****

A few items that interest me...
I have this family in my records but they sometimes go by Ruiz so it's been confusing to say the least. this is the first record I have for that line:
My files are on Rootsweb.com and my file name is Mexico, I hope this helps you a bit.
My maternal line from the Tamazula area are Gutierrez/Mendez but at this point I'm not sure how your line connects with mine but I only record the records of my family and the lines they married into.
My mother was Dolores Gutierrez 19 Sept 1924, you can go to pedigree in text form to see my maternal line.

A few items that interest me... "Ruiz alias Carrillo"
I have to second what Linda says. My Carrillo line in Tamazula was also Ruiz
alias Carrillo ... I don't know the reason but that is the way the documents
are written. So I would suggest that you continue your search with that
possibility. As to your question on ethnicity being mentioned in later
records - yes, there was a deliberate effort made to stop the racial
distinctions.

A few items that interest me... "Ruiz alias Carrillo"
keep in mind too that once the Mulatos and Yndios married other nationalities they were now Mestiso's and for the Mulatos their children were now free..
