Good evening!

This is my first, introductory e-mail to this group, so I thought it good
to start with my most recent connection the pueblos of Jalisco. My
grandfather, Primitivo Vargas, was born in San Nicolas, Jalisco, on 9 June
1905. He was the fifth of six children born to Jose Genaro Vargas and
Maria Delgadillo. My grandfather migrated to the USA, arriving in El Paso,
Texas on 15 July 1916 at the age of 11. He traveled with his mother,
Maria, his brother, Rodrigo, and 2 sisters, Modesta and Francisca. They
also had an older brother, Jesus, that appears to have stayed in Mexico at
that time. One additional sibling, Jose Gabino Vargas, was born 16 Oct
1895, but died as a baby on 10 June 1896.

Once in the United States, the family made its way to California, where
Primitivo lived out the rest of his years. He married Maria Micaela
Garcia, who was a native of Velardena, Durango. She was born 29 Sep 1913.
Her father, Esteban Garcia traveled with her to the United States, arriving
10 June 1920, when she was only 6 years old, also arriving via El Paso
Texas. His border crossing documents indicate that he originated in
Sauceda de la Borda, Zacatecas. He appears to have traveled to several
towns in Durango during his young life finding work in the mines of the
area. Once living in California, he worked on farms as a migrant worker.

My research recently has led me to the Pueblos around Lake Chapala in
Jalisco. I have been able to find family throughout the region, most
notably in San Nicolas (de los Ibarras), Ocotlan, Poncitlan, Jamay, and
other smaller areas in the region. I will be posting more information
about my various family ties and the research I have been conducting of

Welcome, David, I don't know your surnames but I too come from Jamay,
Jalisco and all other surrounding areas you mentioned. I would like to

The earliest Vargas family member I have been able to locate begins with Lucas Thadeo (or Tadeo) Bargas, who married Maria Michaela de la Encarnasion Salazar Montaño on 10 May 1784 in Ocotlán, Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico. Their church marriage record indicates that his father was Manuel Phelipe Bargas and his mother was Juana Maria Thomasa. I don't have any information about his parents beyond their names, but have been searching the baptismal records in and around the area to see if I can obtain any information about his birth.

His spouse was born 25 March 1767 in Jamay, Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico, and christened 7 days later on 1 April 1767 in the same location. Based on her baptismal information and the date of their marriage, she was 16 at the time they were wed, turning 17 less than a month later. Combining the marriage information and her baptismal information shows that her parents names were Juan de San Pedro Salasar Ochoa and Maria Magdalena Montaño. I will discuss more about that line later.

After the two married, they had five children that are known to me:
1) Jose Candelario Bargas Salasar, born 2 February 1788 in La Hacienda de San Nicolas de Buenavista, Chapala, JAL; baptized 3 February 1788 in Chapala, JAL
2) Maria Rafaela Secundina Bargas Salazar, born 30 June 1794 in La Hacienda de la Labor, Chapala, JAL; baptized 8 July 1794 in Chapala, JAL
3) Macsimo Gebronio Bargas Salazar, born 24 July 1797 in Chapala, JAL; baptized 1 August 1797 in Chapala, JAL
4) Jose Isac De Jesus Vargas Salasar, born 3 June 1800 in La Hacienda de la Labor, Chapala, JAL; baptized 6 June 1800 in Chapala, JAL
5) Jose Justo Rufino Bargas Salasar, born 18 July 1806 in La Hacienda de la Labor, Chapala, JAL; baptized 27 July 1806 in Chapala, JAL

I have not explored down each of these branches yet, but have intentions of doing so. However, the oldest son, Jose Candelario, was married on 25 April 1807 to one Maria Estefana Sanchez Ornelas. I do not have her date of birth exactly, but additional research suggests that she was born about 1791 and died prior to 1853. Information from their marriage records show that she was the daughter of Miguel Onofre Sanches Vega and Maria Teresa Ornelas Perez. I will provide more information about these two later, however they appear frequently in records from Poncitlan, particularly surrounding La Hacienda de Los Ornelas. Given her maiden name, it stands to reason that she was a descendent of the Ornelas family of that region.

These two, Jose Candelario and Maria Estefana, proceeded to have seven children that are known to me. These include:
1) Maria Francesca de la Luz Bargas Sanches, born 1 October 1808 in Hacienda de la Labor, Chapala, JAL; baptized 7 October 1808 in Chapala, JAL.
2) Jose Lorenzo de Jesus Vargas Sanchez, born 14 August 1812 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 20 August 1812 in Chapala, JAL.
3) Jose Dolores Bargas Sanches, 16 March 1815 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 19 March 1815 in Chapala, JAL.
4) Maria Telesfora Bargas Sanchez, born 3 January 1818 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 6 January 1818 in Chapal, JAL. She was married on 29 June 1837 to Esteban Ybarra.
5) Jose De La Cruz Bargas Sanches, born 2 May 1821 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 6 May 1821 in Chapala, JAL.
6) Jose Maria Policarpio Bargas Sanchez, born 25 January 1824 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 31 January 1824 in Ixtlahuacán, Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos,JAL.
7) Maria Atanacia Bargas Sanches, born 14 August 1826 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 19 August 1826 in Chapala, JAL; she married Jose Secundino Galvan Hernandez on 19 March 1844.

About this time is when the Bargas surname was converted to Vargas, as Lorenzo appears with both names listed under his childrens' christening records. Although I do have some information regarding the descendants of a few of these lines, the primary one that I have researched is under Lorenzo. He was married to Maria Modesta Reyes Corona on 25 June 1852 in Chapala, JAL. I have some information about her ancestry which I will post later, but mostly in relation to the Reyes name, as the Corona surname has not been one that I have found much information about in the region. I can say that she was born 15 June 1828 in La Hacienda de la Labor, Chapala, JAL, and that her parents were Jose Eustaquio Reyes Salazar and Ygnacia Corona. I will try to come back and post more on her later.

These two would ultimately have 5 children that are known to me. They include:
1) Maria Paula Vargas Reyes, born 2 March 1856 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 6 March 1856 in Chapala, JAL.
2) Macedonio Vargas, born 12 September 1859 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 18 September 1859 in Chapala, JAL.
3) Lucio Vargas, born 13 December 1861 in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, Chapala, JAL; baptized 19 December 1861 in Chapala, JAL.
4) Jose Genaro Vargas Reyes, born 10 July 1865 in San Nicolas de Ibarra, Chapala, JAL; baptized 12 July 1865 in Chapala, JAL; married to Maria Delgadillo 30 July 1890 in Chapala, JAL; died 3 July 1912 in San Nicolas de Ibarra, Chapala, JAL.
5) Maria Cruz Vargas, born 15 July 1871 in San Nicolas de Ibarra, Chapala, JAL; baptized 20 July 1871 in Chapala, JAL.
