introduction of the Vázquez del Mercado family

Hello everyone, I am Ramón E Sánchez Vázquez del Mercado, I am 62 years old and for more than 10 years I have dedicated a lot of time to the genealogy referring to the surname Vázquez del Mercado, my starting point is the so-called "red book ".... an old book resulting from the transcription and compilation of previous books made by my great-grandfather "ALEJANDRO JOSE LADISLAO DE JESUS VAZQUEZ DEL MERCADO MEJIA" (b1841, Sombrerete, Zacatecas, who was governor of AGUASCALIENTES state" in Porfiriato´s periods ) and which in turn has as its starting point his grandfather "NICOLAS JOSE VAZQUEZ DEL MERCADO" (b1720 Zacatecas, Mex.) married to Maria Ygnacia Espinoza de los Monteros, who have been essential for a better understanding of the growth of the family.

Through these years I have tried to link the historical references of the ancestor "Gines Básquez de Mercado" with the current family.... I want to emphasize that I have found that the surname "Vázquez del Mecado" through several centuries has derived as "Vázquez del Mercado", "Mercado", and a large part of those who currently have only "Mercado" as their surname derive from the original surname "Basquez de Mercado".

Currently my interest is to be able to discover the link between the "Básquez de Mercado" family from the time of the conquest with the family settled mainly in Jalisco, Zacatecas, Durango, Aguascalientes and CDMX between the period 1540 to 1700....

I am grateful to this site for the opportunity to advance the investigation of the family relationships mentioned and to be able to collaborate with members who share similar interests.

I look forward to your comments and thank you for being able to share my research,

Fresnillo, Zacatecas ---Where Are The Records???

Looking for my 4th GGrandfather Cipriano Puente born in Fresnillo in 1787 but the records don't go back that far for that location.

Does anyone know why the records for Fresnillo are so few? Were the records lost? The city was established in 1554 so the records must be someplace if not lost.

any thoughts?

Joseph

ps: I did find his MI record for when he married Eduarda Torres in 1813 in Villanueva:

San Judas Tadeo, Villanueva Zacatecas

Has anyone had any experience in researching records in The San Judas Tadeo church in Villanueva, Zacatecas? My wife and I are planning to visit there this summer. Her Corvera and Marquez ancestors lived there. I'm just curious as to how approachable the church staff would be for us to see their old written records. Thank you so much for any advice you can offer.

Introduction (Reynoso, Renteria, and Zermeno families)

Hi All, I have been a member here since 2016, with Martin Renteria noted in the records of my wife, Judith Martinez, with her Martinez family very well established and recorded in the Coahuila and Nuevo Leon areas of Mexico. Martin Renteria settled in the Llerena and Sombrete regions of Zacatecas, where he died in 1610. My link to Martin Renteria is via daughter Mayor Renteria, who also settled in the Nuevo Leon area, and ties back to the Martinez family through many other Nuevo Leon/Coahuila surnames.

My interest in this website came about when performing some research for the Reynoso family while living in Phoenix, Arizona. Our families both had moved from Globe, Arizona (a mining town) to Phoenix, Arizona (about 70 miles west). While conducting the Reynoso research, I found that the Reynoso family also had ties to the Renteria family. Since then, I have started a Juchipila area website, which focuses around the Reynoso y Renteria families. If interested, the website is located at http://www.clingram.com/famhis1/index.php

My focus lately had been with restoring the existing website after it went down. It is also with maintaining the current Nuestrosranchos site. This is all a part of the effort of the tech group that was assembled when the site went down in 2021. The tech group is also in the process of upgrading the site to a newer version of software for future use. The existing website software is a bit dated (Support for the software ended in 2016). The new site and software are current (2022), and when approved by the tech group this site will be hosted at a different location.

My introduction today is on behalf of my Grandson, Paul Hernandez, who married Alejandra Zermeno Moreno earlier this year (2022). The Zermeno family is well established in the Jalisco region, and this family is traced back to several conquistadors (via the Zermeno and Brambila) surnames.

This branch of the Zermeno family was listed early in Lagos and surrounding areas, but eventually settled in Juchitlan, Jalisco, Mexico and Union de Tula, Jalisco Mexico. I have included a file in the Members Files Area listed under Zermeno, Alejandra, with her pedigree chart through several generations.

I appreciate all the efforts of the membership over the many years this website has been in operation. The wealth of information that has been shared among the membership has helped to break down many genealogy brick walls. Many Thanks,
Lee

Possible origin of the Lopez Bueso family?

Hola Primos,

In searching for documents related to my Michoacan ancestors in the Spanish Inquisition archives... I ran across a potential clue to the origin of the Lopez Bueso family of Tecolotlan, Tamazula, Autlan, etc. (My wife has Lopez Bueso ancestors which is why I decided to take a look, I'm glad I did!)

I found the following document in the Mexican Spanish Inquisition archives:

The case revolves around Andres Lopez Bueso who turned himself in for "bigamo, por ser casado dos veces"... In it we learn that he's originally from Antequera, Espana - son of Pedro Bueso and Ana de Vera. He left Spain and left behind a wife and re-married in Mexico around 1615. He married Ana de Escobar, hija de Hernando de Munguia and Isabel de Escobar, sobrina de Francisco Ruiz Galindo (Who gives testimony).

I can't seem to find any children from this couple, but, they did settle around in the "provincia de Avalos" - and they appeared to move around Zapotiltic, Sayula, and Colima.

All in all, I really have a strong feeling that this Andres Lopez de Bueso is THE connection for the Lopez Bueso's to Spain. I feel that Nicolas Lopez de Bueso (who married Nicolasa de Guerrero y Ocon) could very well be one their kids.

Not only that, but we also find a connection to the Munguia family that lived around the same area. Could the father of Ana de Escobar, Hernando de Munguia, the progenitor of the Munguia Villela family that laid roots around Tamazula, Cotija, Sayula, etc.?

Thougts?

Website Money Needed

ok the website has needed to be updated for a few years now as the Drupal is way out of date. I checked with DreamHost who is my ISP and they say they will do it for $300 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

I've been paying for everything since inception in 2002 and I'm NOT going to pay for this. Having said that I'm not going to take the site down if you all refuse to foot this bill. So what do you think would asking each of you to donate $10 be too much to ask? I said $10 because I don't think MANY of you all will separate with a few buck but I do hope 30 of you will. . .but hey surprise me and make me a rich man and flood my mailbox with ten dollar bills.

======================================================

Introduction

Hello!

My name is Paula (Smiley) Flores and I thank you for accepting me into this group/forum. While I've been researching off and on for many years, I'm always looking for more information.
Here is my family that I am looking for:
https://www.nuestrosranchos.org/pdflores

My grandfather's family was from Toyahua, bajo Nochistlan, Zacatecas. I have already found a distant relative, however, he posted back in 2010, so I don't know if he's still active. I did send him an email so we'll see! I was happy just to see that as I found a great-great uncle in his info.

Surnames I'm searching are: Chaves, Navarro, Martinez, de Leon, Perez, Jacinta

Thanks and glad to be here!!

Spanish Surname with del vs. Del

Hello, I'm researching my grandmother's (maternal) line in the mid 1700s in SLP,and I just came across a clue of an additional name: Sacramento. It is listed on a child's wedding record as Maria Prudencia Gertrudis del Sacramento Rangel. Del is not capitalized, Does this mean Sacramento is part of the surname, or an additional first name? It is the only record I found so far (after years) with that additional name listed.

Thank you,

Cynthia Jimenez

Permit me to introduce myself

Hello all:

I have been working on my genealogy for nearly two years now. I spent most of the time developing the family tree, but recently I started interviewing older relatives, and also finally started putting things down on paper in an orderly fashion.

I first was not sure how to proceed, but then I came up with the idea to focus on each of my four great-grandparents' families, and maybe to go back a bit into the past if I found anything worth mentioning.

I am researching Los Altos de Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Yurecuaro, but I also have ancestry outside of the scope of the website in Baja and Alta California.

Since I'm only allowed one image I am posting the first sheet of one of the families. If there is a way to share more, let me know, (I've not yet explored the possibilities of the website.)
I already have four PDF files, one with more that 30 pages.

Thank you all for admitting me, and I look forward to getting some of your more experienced feedback.

12 Thanks But Still Disappointing. . .

I'd like to thank the 12 members that responded to my request for a $10 donation to update the website.

Many thanks to:

Thanks but the messages I sent out for support have been read over a 1000 times and 12 of you kind folks have responded. Makes me think that the interest in this group is VERY SMALL and NOT of value to most of you. . .disappointing to say the least.

I really would like for 18 more of you all (minimum) to respond to this request for support. I you think we should keep the website rolling in as efficient way as possible please consider being one of the 18 more to send your support for the website.

PEDRO BENITO

Hola prim@s,

It’s amazing how much serendipity can play into family research. The other day, I was looking at this website, which offers transcriptions of testamentos and autos de bienes de difuntos of residents of 16th century Zacatecas. I didn’t see any of my ancestor’s names among those listed, but wanting to read something while I enjoyed my morning coffee, I decided to open one. The name “Pedro Benito” caught my eye, because I know that one of the founders of San Luis Potosí was named Pedro Benito. Though this testamento was dated 16 Jun 1575, I thought I’d take a look, to see if there was a connection.

This Pedro Benito was a miner (of course!); born in Valencia de Alcántara, located in Cáceres, Extremadura, he was the son of Juan Benito and Mari González, both deceased. He says that he had a sister named Mari González Benito, and if she were still alive, he wanted to send her 200 pesos. She obviously lived elsewhere. I didn’t recognize any of the other names, until he named his executors. The first one leaped out at me:

Antonio de San Martín, “su yerno.”

I almost spilled my coffee when I saw that, because I have in my lines an Antonio de San Martín cc Mari González, early residents of San Luis Potosí, both of whom I was still brick-walled on. According to the testamentos of their children, they had lived previously in Zacatecas. Is it possible that Pedro Benito was the father of my Mari González?
I quickly scanned through the rest of the document, to where Benito named his children and heirs, and BINGO! His daughter was Mari González! I could not believe my eyes! What are the odds, right?
Pedro Benito also had two sons, Pedro Benito and Alonso Benito, and they were all his hijos naturales. Their mother is not named.

With this new information, I went to check it against what I knew about Pedro Benito founder of SLP, and what I had already found in the SLP archives, regarding him, Alonso Benito, and Mari González, my ancestor:

  • Pedro Benito cc doña Isabel Enestrosa y Quisado, padres de Lorenzo Benito, Alonso Benito y doña María Vásquez Benito (casada con Juan de Arteaga).
  • Doña Mari González cc Antonio de San Martín, padres de: doña Isabel de Parraga cc Geronimo de Cabrera, doña Beatriz de Parraga beata, Licenciado Alonso de San Martín Presbitero, doña Antonia de Sosa cc Diego de Cespedes, Antonio de San Martín (sastre), Manuel de San Martín, doña Mariana de Sosa cc Juan López de Ávila (mis 9o abuelos), doña Agueda de Sosa cc Martín Ramos Casado.
  • Alonso Benito cc doña Isabel López, padres de doña María y doña Leonor López.

Pedro Benito “el Mozo” was a soldier from Zacatecas; he was a lieutenant of Capitán Miguel Caldera, and his inseparable companion - he was with Caldera when he founded San Luis Potosí in 1592, and was even with him when he died in San Juan del Río in 1597.

In a clause in his testamento of 2 Nov 1596, Capitán Miguel Caldera declared that, “to the daughters of Juan Gutiérrez, and to those of Antonio de San Martín, nieces of Pedro Benito, that 4,000 pesos from my goods be distributed among them, to help with their marriages.”
On 8 Aug 1597, Isabel Lopez, widow of Alonso Benito, granted power to Pedro Benito, her brother-in-law.
On 6 Jan 1610, Manuel de San Martín (son of Antonio de San Martín cc Mari González) registered mines, and donated “a su tio Pedro Benito, 10 baras.”
On 31 Dec 1614, Juan de Arteaga, husband of María Vásquez Benito (daughter of Pedro Benito), was a witness for Mariana de Sosa, a daughter of Antonio de San Martín cc Mari González, and he identified Mariana de Sosa as a “prima hermana” of his wife.

I think this is enough to support that the three children of Pedro Benito, minero y vecino de Zacatecas, are the same whose families were amongst the earliest settlers in San Luis Potosí. I was thrilled to have knocked down one more brick-wall, and totally by accident!

On a whim, I decided to check PARES, to see if there were any other records on Pedro Benito, and I found the original probate documents transcribed on that webpage. There was also a document from contratación, dated 26 Jan 1538:

It was the same Pedro Benito! I was floored! 1538!! And to FLORIDA F-L-A!!

I was able to find his entry at family search. And I received another surprise, when I noticed that on the header of the folder which holds his entry, written is: “La gente q pasa a la florida con el adlᵈº don hᵈº de soto”.

“The people going to Florida with the adelantero Hernando de Soto.”

Jo. Lín. Not only do I have a record of a European ancestor who stepped foot on North American soil as early as 1538, he apparently arrived with one of the most famed explorers!

Hello Everyone,

Over the years there has been much discussion regarding the parents of the Maria de Villasenor y Lomelin cc Francisco de la Cueva y Lomelin. The most recent conclusion is that Maria de Villasenor y Lomelin was the daughter of Jose de Villasenor Figueroa cc Bernarda de Coria y Lomelin. Jose and Bernarda did father at least two Maria de Villasenor's:

Maria de Villasenor y Coria Lomelin (Bap. 22 Nov, 1657 - Teocuitatlan, Jalisco, Mexico)
Maria de Villasenor y Coria Lomelin (Bap. 3 Mar, 1663 - Teocuitatlan, Jalisco, Mexico

However, I don't think that either of above Marias were the same as the one married to Francisco de la Cueva. Francisco de la Cueva and Maria de Villasenor lived in the area for a time (Hacienda de Zitala, Teocuitatlan, Jalisco), Jiquilpan, La Barca, and Ayo el Chico per the information found in the their kids baptismal and matrimonial information. Francisco and Maria started having children as early as 1661 with the birth of Sebastian de la Cueva y Villasenor:

Sebastian de la Cueva y Villasenor (Bap. 18 Mar, 1661 - Teocuitatlan, Jalisco, Mexico)

I also found this dispensa between Diego de Villasenor y Delgadillo (Son of Juan de Villasenor y Figueroa cc Maria Delgadillo):

Dispensa matrimonial entre Diego de Villasenor y Ines de la Cueva (1 Jan., 1681 - Jiquilpan, Michoacan, Mexico)

In this information, the witnesses all say that the novios are related in the 3rd degree, plus this involves a son of Juan de Villasenor y Figueroa who it is thought to be the parent of the Maria de Villasenor, mother of Ines mentioned in this petition. Furthermore, Ines is said to have been born around 1657.

Ultimately, this new information casts doubts on the parents of Maria de Villasenor cc Francisco de la Cueva y Carbajal. Especially given that this couple started having kids as early as 1657 which makes it impossible for Jose de Villasenor y Figueroa cc Bernarda de Coria Lomelin to have had a Maria that was married and having children around the same time.

I don't really have any good leads on the parents for Maria. I'll continue searching, but I hope that this information is at least useful is ruling out that Jose and Bernarda were Maria de Villasenor's parents.

Saludos,

Daniel Serna Valencia

Ansaldo - Zacoalco de Torres, Tlajomulco

My name is Glen and I am a new member to the group. I started this about a year ago, so I am still relatively new to the field. In the beginning I focused my research on the surnames Alvarez del Castillo and Hernandez Gamiño in Arandas, Ayo el Chico, Jesus Maria and Degollado. I then moved on to Quiroz, Bañales, Garcia and others, but I hit a few dead ends so I took a break from them (Massimo Bañales, Faustino Garcia, and Clemente Hernandez.) I plan to revisit them in the future. Over the past week I have turned my attention to the Ansaldo surname in Santa Catarina, Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco. In my opinion, the majority of Ansaldos in Santa Catarina (now known as General Andres Figueroa) can be traced to Jose Justo Rufino Ansaldo Montaño. (See my info on him here, if you’re interested: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/mralvarez314) I am now trying to determine who his paternal and maternal grandparents were. I would appreciate it if someone else took a look at what I have so far and weighed in on who I think they may be. I believe Jose Justo Rufino’s parents were: Jose Ansaldo=Maria Petrona Montaño My evidence for this includes the following two records. Jose Justo Rufino’s first marriage (1791): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-PWHS-Z?i=112&wc=3JXS-HZ4%3… Jose Justo Rufino’s second marriage (1816): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-XZFC-S?i=122&wc=3J4F-168%3… I also found the following three records and I am wondering if they are of Jose Justo Rufino’s parents and two sisters. Joseph Lupian Ansaldo=Maria Lucrecia Petrona Montaño Marriage (1762) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-X4SJ-39?i=205&wc=3J4D-SPD%… Maria Josepha Salome Ansaldo Montaño Sister (1762) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-X4SF-9X?i=282&wc=3J48-BZ3%… Maria Josepha Thomasa Ansaldo Montaño Sister (1765) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-X4SX-YK?i=310&wc=3J48-BZ3%… So, am I on the right track so far? Can I confidently say that Jose Justo Rufino Ansaldo’s paternal grandparents are Antto. Ansaldo=Felipa Nuñes and that his maternal grandparents are Jph Manuel Montaño=Maria Beatris Gutierres? Does anyone else work the Ansaldo surname in the area around Tlajomulco in the 1700s or earlier? Thank you.

Cosme Felix Bugarin

For those interested in researching the Bugarin family. Long ago I posted some information on a Cosme Felix Bugarin regarding a record of a lawsuit dated 1713 on the PARE website found in the Chancellory in Valladolid, Spain. It was overly difficult for me to translate. However I could make out that Cosme Felix was referred to as being from La Noya or La Noia as it is also spelled at times. I've yet to confirm this is the same Cosme Felix who married Maria de los Reyes from La Baiona. The marriage took place on 14 August 1675 in Zacatecas, Zacatecas and was recorded January 16, 1676 in Mexico City.

I recently found two more documents referring to Cosme Felix who are most certainly the one referred to in the lawsuit in vicinity of La Baiona but again unconfirmed to be the same person in Mexico. One of the documents dated 1711 found in PARES is entitled: ES.47186.ARCHV/8.12.3.2//PL CIVILES,FERNANDO ALONSO (F),CAJA 2865,4, describes:

Another document is a lengthy contemporary article in the "Boletín do Instituto de
Estudios Vigueses" dated 2015 available online for a download, on pages 230 and 231 (Doing a word search of "Bugarin" within the file) you'll find reference to Cosme Felix Bugarin.

Again it is unconfirmed this is the same Cosme Felix Bugarin who is the descendant of so many in the Tlaltenango and surrounding area. Of course if anyone has found a record of his death in Mexico during this timeframe this information would be of no use.

Hello everybody:
I have been trying to find out if my ancestor Nicolás de Ulloa (born between 1640 and 1650), married to María Muñoz de Ávila (born 1652 in Tlaltenango, Zacatecas), and father of Candelaria de Ulloa (who married in Tlaltenango in 1713 to Pedro de Bargas Casteñeda) is the son of Nicolás de Ulloa (Márquez de los Olivos) and María Ruiz de Esparza.
I will very grateful if anyone has any information.

Ferrer v Ferrel Carmel v Carmen

I have a set of greats Bicente Ferrer (Ferrel) Diaz and Maria del Carmen (Carmel) Rodriguez. I see the spelling of both names going back and forth from Ferrer to Ferrel and from Carmen to Carmel. Has anyone else seen this? Here is an example of Ferrel and Carmel for the baptism of Joseph Santiago (middle record on 2nd page) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BPXL-D?i=374&personaUr…

New member Derek researching Davila Villalpando and Ponce Franco ancestry from Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Jalisco

Hi fellow researchers,
This is Derek, nice to meet everyone! I'm doing research on my wife's ancestry. Her parents were Francisco Davila Villalpando, born in Pabellon, Ags. and her mother Virginia Ponce Franco, born in Aguascalientes. I've uploaded a tree for each of her parents to allow separate viewing. There are some gaps in the trees and needed updates and corrections :) For some last names I've been able to trace them back to the 1500's to various cities in Spain. I'm making updates in Ancestry and frequent searches and cross checks with Family Search.
Glad to be a new member and look forward to collaborating.
Have a good day,
Derek

Hola prim@s,

Do any of you have any of the above mentioned couples in your lines? I have it documented that Gaspar and Alonso were brothers, and also that Gabriel and Sebastian were brothers. I think it's likely that all four are brothers, and I'm trying to compile enough info on each, to establish this theory. I also think it's possible that another brother is Baltasar de Avalos cc Juana Ruiz de Aldana.

Does anybody know if Gabriel de Avalos, who married Maria Quezada, is the same who married Augustina de Velasco?
