Can you give us the links for the marriages and the dispensa you mentioned?
I think it is appropiate for those of us that are willing to try to help
that don't have a relationship to these individuals and/or aren't studying
the Nochistlán records. It also gives us a little more time to study the
records.

Hola Lisa, In Jose Luis Vazquez 's book Genealogia de Nochistlan- Chap.13 page 45 tjere is a George Delgadillo married to Clara Alvarez but the author Jose Luis has George son of Juan Delgadillo and Elvira Martinez de Alcaron. I found a Cristobal Delgadillo Page 44 that says he is the son of Diego Delgadillo and Petraona de Isla. I really can't say much ,in this chapter( for me
) it is kinda of confusing.

Lisa, I'm confused,
Of you are referring to the 1798 dispensa extraction I posted on Feb 7, then Christobal is the FATHER of Ignacio, not the son; according to the tree on img 208.

I would say that dispensa from 1798 is what you should go by (for now until you have better proof). The fact that George's marriage madrina was daughter of Diego Delgadillo is not enough to assume that she was sister to his father. There could have been more than one Christobal Delgadillo at that time, and any one of them could have been George's brother.

Just my take--at first glance, although I didn't read the entire dispensa. :)

Just finished with all of the surnames starting with "A" listed in the "Mexico, Jalisco State Catholic Church Records,Barranca de Sant Clara, Barranca de Santa Clara, Bautismos 1922-1948". Eventually, I will try to link the person's name with their Baptism record. Enjoy.

Disfrutar.

Jose Luziano Gonzalez Corbera, hijo da Ygnasio Corbera y Juana Faustina Gonzalez.

I believe it is saying that the child being now baptized is "mulato," and that the child had been baptized at home, because they were fearful the child would die before being baptized at church.

The part that I'm not sure of I think is saying that the person that performed the baptismal at home was a Juan Marcos de Cota... the remaining wording I need help with.

Thank you,

Pat,

Here's the translation.

On 3 January 1782, a mulato baby boy born 28 days ago, son of Ygnacio Corbera and Juana Faustina Gonsalez, legitimately married. Because of the danger of imminent death, the child was baptized at home by Juan Marcos de Cota, naming him Jose Luciano and afterwards I baptized him. His Godparents were the same Juan Cota and his wife, Ana de Acosta. I signed it.

 Alicia,

Thank you for your help.

I have another question... Was it common for couples to baptize their offspring, even if they were not married?

I'm seeing records where children are listed as "hijo/hija natural," but the names of the parents as well as the names of the AP and AM are included in the record/document ?

I hadn't viewed "baptismos naturals," films before, but now I'm finding it very interesting.

Pat,

I have a GGgrandfather who had two families, one with his wife and another with another woman. He actually had more children with the second one and they were all recorded in the hijos naturales with both sets of grandparents listed. Sinverguenza that he was. We believe he must have been influential in the town for them to overlook that.

I think that when the father was willing to claim the child they could and would list the grandparents. In many cases if there was rape or incest, the paternal grandparents would not be listed but in this case, the father claimed his children.

In some places and times, it seems that only the mother is named in cases of the parents not being married. In other places, the appears that hijos naturales are almost more common than children of married parents; in those areas both parents are named most of the time, as well as all the grandparents.

I have rarely seen cases of hijo naturales where only the father is named.

Mexican Church Records in other languages!

I just wanted to write about something that caught my attention in the last few weeks. I used to think that Spanish was all that I needed to read Mexican church records.

I have seen marriage records from the 1870's and 1880's written in Latin, for the Church of Saint Agustin (Ecclesiae Sancti Augustini) in Laredo, Texas, just across the Mexican border. Some completely written, some printed with "fill in the blanks", depending on the year. Although they have the Latinized names and surnames, they also include the names in English or Spanish at the margin. In these cases, you just read them! If you know Spanish you may figure out a good deal of the text. In any case, you can just look for the names of bride, groom, their parents, ages and places of origin. It is not too different from reading Spanish records. The film number I have checked out is 0944276, but I don't think it is already online. Náhuatl records may be quite more challenging though!

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Mexican Church Records in other languages!

I just wanted to write about something that caught my attention in the last few weeks. I used to think that Spanish was all that I needed to read Mexican church records. To my surprise, I was browsing some online films from Guachinango, Jalisco, and discovered that at a certain time, in the 1800's, whole parish books were written in Latin! Even the names of the people involved were latinized by the priest who recorded them. This caught me by surprise because I had never encountered this.

I thought, well, Latin sounds somewhat like Spanish, and I guess it won't be impossible to decipher if I ever need to look for an ancestor in one of those parish books. Well, just today, I was doing some indexing for familysearch, and I opened a batch from Mexico City to work on. To my surprise, it was all written in what appears to be a Native language, I assume Nahuatl! I tried to index it, but it was just impossible! I had to return the batch and work on another one. Has anybody encountered similar church records in Nahuatl, Latin or other languages? What do you do in these types of situations if you have a strong feeling your ancestor is in that particular book? -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

The church records from Tula in Hidalgo are in Náhuatl for the 1500s
and 1600s. I posted a couple of them on my facebook page. I've not seen
any Nueva Galicia records in Náhuatl.

I too have seen Mexican records only in Spanish, not in Latin.

Hi, I don't have the film number for the Latin records in Jalisco, since I was just browsing during my free time and not looking for a specific ancestor. For the  Nahuatl records, the indexing program lists the film as 004565460 Mexico, DF Bautismos 1536-1900. I've been indexing in this project since the Aguascalientes project disappeared. I'm glad I can be of help with this project, but I sure hope they bring something for Jalisco soon.

I have seen Latin in some baptisms of my ancestors in the late 1800s in a certain diocese that encomassed El Paso County Texas and Dona Ana County, in Mesilla Valley in Southern New Mexico. Carmen was Carmeli, Maria was Miriam, Eligio was Eligiam, Eulalio was Eulalius.

They were in a pre-printed fill-in-the'blanks form that read;

Ego infrascriptus baptizavi________________
nat_________ex_______________ex loco___________________et_________________ex loco______________Patrini Fuerunt_____________________.

I read these as the name of the child, when and where born, mother's Name, where mother lived, father's name, where father lived, and who the godparents were. The priest wrote in the information in latin, such as Septembris for September, close enough to Spanish or Italian so that I could make it out.

Alicia,

Thank you so much for helping on this project, it means so much to me - I still can't believe that I was able to locate this document, thanks to the help of Claudia Reynoso for indexing - once I had my 7th great-grandfathers name, it put it in "google" and had a hit which was for the Guadalajara Marriage Dispensas and there was his name. Thank you all so much !

Judy,

Still working on this, I was sick this week with a viral infection, therefore did not have the energy it takes to go through the record. I'll keep working on transcribing and then translating this document.

Baptism Requirements

I have a general question that may have already been answered so I apologize in advance.

I do not think there was a requirement to baptize within a certain number of days, but rather an expectation or custom. A consideration was that many babies did not survive, so if born alive, it was rather important for them to be baptized soon. Typically, baptism was within a few days of the birth. In some places and some periods, 2-3 weeks was customary; but the shorter time period was much more common. However, I have seen baptisms a month or more after the birth, as well as on the day the baby was born.

In today's Church, a person typically needs permission of the priest of the parish they reside in for sacraments to be performed in another parish. Formerly, the costs associated with the sacraments were part of the priest's income. Historically, this was part of the reasons for Benito's Juarez's reforms in the late 1850s.

I noticed in some of the earlier baptism records in Michoacan and Zacatecas if a child was very ill or in danger of dying anyone could baptize them then report it to the church and they would be baptized a second time at the church if they lived.  I also noticed in some parts of Jalisco and Zacatecas abt 10 days seemed to be the norm. in the mid to late 1800.  I also found my ancestor baptized but no civil registration for a year giving that year for her birth when she was actually a year old so baptism was more important to them.

Apparently, although no formal monitoring of waivers of Michoacan, as there is in Guadalajara. I think it is very important, as Michoacan covered a large territory that included parts of Jalisco. There is a wealth of research in Morelia diocecis for beginners like us.

Dispensas de San Luis Potosí

Hola:
