Now in San Francisco

I am now quite at home by-the-sea in San Francisco.

I updated my email address but still have not received any emailings from our group:(

I was SHOCKED to find out that there is no Family History Center in San Francisco! Only one on Pacific that is open by appointment only.

Posting family files

I've been on the road since the end of Sept but have made it a point to read the postings even though I haven't responded. I'm happy to see so many new Spanish speaking members even though I don't read it very well my knowledge is expanding because of them by way of bablefish.. Welcome.

Welcome back Linda. . .glad you had a good trip but it is always great
to come home.

Congratulations on your new cousin Daniel Mendez. Welcome to the group
Daniel***. If you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to jump
in. I hope you two will be able to work together to advance your
genealogy. Seems that San Jose (my place of birth) is becoming an area
of significant Ranchos activity (well I should say the Northern
California area: Bay Area and Sacramento).

***Linda, can you contact Daniel and tell him that he never replied to
the 3 confirmation emails and thus never got subscribed to the email
lists. I resent them today so he'll have a fresh batch of emails that he
needs to reply to. I'm not sure if he wants to be subscribed as I've
resent them before but he doesn't reply to them. Maybe you can talk to him.

Because he saw my postings on Ancestry.com he was able to contact me about some serious errors I had made on the Mendez family tree in the 1900's. I took names on old photo's as fact and put them in my records in error. I thank Daniel for taking the time to contact me with the corrections on his family tree. It turned out an unknown photo was Daniels father and older brother taken at my uncles home 20 or so years ago, long before I started working the genealogy of the Mendez family in Tamazula Jalisco.

Genealogy software - Linux

I recently switched to a flavor of Linux (PCLinuxOS) as my main PC operating system. Does anyone know of or can recommend a genealogy software program that runs on Linux? TIA

Ed:

There are a number of Unix genealogy programs. I cannot vouch for them as I have not used them but I have a partition on my computer running Ubuntu and can install one or more of them to help you through the process if you like. I am curious to see how good they are:

http://genes.sourceforge.net/

http://gramps-project.org/

Also, if you click on the GEDCOM menu link on the Nuestros Ranchos site, you will see The Next Generation genealogy database software running. This site sits on a Unix server... but the software runs using PHP and MySQL, which are free and can easily be installed on a Unix machine.

Let me know if you need more info or help. I would also like to know what experience you have had with driver support on your UNIX PC. Soon after installing Ubuntu, I discovered that I would not be able to use my computer to its full functionality because there were not drivers for a number of important hardware pieces that I own.

Comentario

Arturo,
To add to the list of genealogy software that runs on Linux I also came across GeneWeb (http://cristal.inria.fr/~ddr/GeneWeb/). I haven't tried the program but it came recommended from a person on the PCLinuxOS forum who has been using it for several years.
I did install Gramps and the program looks pretty good. I've only spent about 45 minutes, so far, checking out the capabilities, etc. and plan to spend more time with the app this weekend.

I tried several Linux distributions (Ubuntu, openSuse, Mepis, etc.) and found PCLinuxOS very easy to install and very familiar in feel immediately after the installation. I've been running it on my laptop and an old spare PC for about a month and just last week took the to plunge to install PCLinuxOS on my main machine. So far it's recognized my core hardware without problem. I've also been able to update my Nvidia video drivers. I have yet to setup my scanner and printer and will do that this week. Right now I'm setting up Samba so as to share files between my various machines.

I'm finding that there are Linux applications that are nearly identical in functionality to Windows app's. Still there are some app's for which there is no substitute. For these I'm running Parallels. Parallels creates virtual machines (vm) on your PC on which you can install another operating system. It runs on Mac, Linux, and Windows. In my case I installed a vm in Linux and thereafter installed WindowsXP in the vm. So I'll be running Linux but can fire-up WindowsXP while still in my native operating system. I plan to use WinXP only for those "special" app's and will not use it to for general web and email access.

What hardware are you looking to connect to Ubuntu?

Paso 3 weeks ago for a few days and drove by Concordia on the highway.
None of our family is buried there. If they're not in Evergreen,
they're at Ft. Bliss. Marge:)

Marge,

My husband has relatives buried in all those places too, and some of my mother's were buried in the old Lower El Paso Valley Indian mission cemeteries (Ysleta, Socorro, San Elizario).

weren't you all talking about the book Psychic Roots awhile back. Well
on that series where they interview George Ryskamp they also are
interviewing that author. Here is the link to both interviews and others:

Thanks, Joseph,

The one in the municipalidad de Monte Escobedo must be the one. I have ancestors Pablo Soriano and Mariana Escovedo from Salitrillo whose daughter Maria Rita married a Romualdo Duran who was from that Rancho de Los Chaves. I had wondered if it was near Tepetongo or Jerez.

Archivo General de la Nacion Mexico and familysearch.org

I have records/data from the Archivo General de la Nacion (Valparaiso, Sombrerete, Zacatecas, etc) which I find very helpful. My records were extracted from the Archives themselves and sent to me by a friend. Unfortunately I have had little luck in trying to find out how to locate and use the Archivo General de la Nacion; their website is not user friendly and so far useless for me. I emailed the Family History Center that I use and asked how to use the Archive General de la Nacion, and I obtained the following response, which I will use in my investigations of the Archivo General:

film 0280786 matrimonios Ayotlan, Jal. Batch M604476 period 1692-1741

Help needed again.

Hello! I need the name of parents, padrinos and testigos if any for Matheo Thadeo De Leon and Maria Bibanco, marriage date 23 may 1726 in Ayotlan, Jal.

Who is the borrower of such film?

If there is no person listed in the "Borrower" column next to a film number in the database that means that no member has the film on indefinite loan.

The database serves two purposes:

1. Provide batch numbers by locality with direct link to familysearch.org to search a given batch number (the case of the film of which you inquire)

2. Allow members to "share" the films which they have on indefinite loan by putting their names next to films for which they are willing to do lookups.

Some films will have both a batch number and a borrower name, others only one or the other. The film of which you inquire was entered only because somebody had the batch number but not the film on loan.

Thank you Arturo!

okay I thought maybe you had a bit of "oral history" or some stories
that led you to believe that Zacatecas was your location. It's going to
take some real digging to work from the Zacatecas side AND the NL side
trying to match them up. Deeper than I know how to investigate without
investing tons of time. But investigations like that sometimes do work
out if you have evidence that the Saldivar Name originated in Mexico
from Zacatecas (I don't know but just speculating). Maybe some research
on the Name. Here is some information you can try to access at this site:

http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/ZZ/fza7_print.html
or http://www.smu.edu/swcenter/zald%C3%ADvar.htm

*ZALDÍVAR, VICENTE DE* (ca. 1573-?). Vicente de Zaldívar, the younger,
Spanish explorer and soldier, was probably born in Zacatecas, a mining
town on the frontier of northern Mexico, about 1573. He and Juan de
Zaldívar^qv were sons of Vicente de Zaldívar, the elder, and Magdalena
de Mendoza y Salazar. Through a series of marriages, the Zaldívar and
Oñate families of Zacatecas had become so intricately related that Juan
de Oñate,^qv the future colonizer of New Mexico, was both uncle and
second cousin to the Zaldívar brothers, and he later became the
father-in-law of Vicente. In September 1595 Juan de Oñate received a
royal contract to colonize New Mexico, and he began immediately to
recruit officers and men. He enlisted his young kinsmen in his command.
Vicente de Zaldívar received the position of /sargento mayor/, a rank
below that of his brother, Juan. Through no fault of Oñate's, final
approval of his contract by the king's agent did not come until early
1598. The expedition's point of departure was the frontier town of Santa
Bárbara, situated near the headwaters of the Río Conchos in southern
Chihuahua. On previous occasions Spaniards en route to New Mexico had
followed the Conchos to its confluence with the Rio Grande and then
proceeded upstream along the course of the larger river to the province.
This circuitous route had the advantage of ample water along the way.
But Oñate, made impatient by delays, sought a shortcut and ordered a
reconnaissance to that end by Vicente de Zaldívar. Zaldívar, at the head
of a small party, spent nearly a month in the field, but he returned
with knowledge of a more direct route, which afforded some water,
through formidable sand dunes. Following the new trail blazed by
Zaldívar, the full expedition reached "El Paso," the ford in the Rio
Grande, on May 4, 1598. It then continued along the course of the river
to New Mexico.

By the fall of 1598 Spanish settlers in New Mexico had become sorely
disappointed by the lack of readily exploitable wealth. Zaldívar, with
apparent talent for pathfinding, was dispatched to reconnoiter the
buffalo plains of eastern New Mexico and western Texas. It seems
unlikely, however, that he reached the present borders of Texas. Shortly
after his return with ample supplies of buffalo jerky, Juan de Zaldívar
was killed in an Indian revolt atop the great rock at Acoma. Oñate
promoted Vicente to his deceased brother's position of /maestre de
campo/ and ordered him to subdue the Acomas. In January 1599 Vicente de
Zaldívar crushed the Acoma revolt. He later participated in the trial
and drastic punishment of surviving Acomas. After his command ended in
New Mexico Zaldívar returned to Zacatecas, where before 1620 he married
Juan de Oñate's daughter, María de Oñate. They had at least one son. In
1626 Zaldívar was admitted to the prestigious military order of
Santiago. He prospered for some years in the silver mine business but
then suffered financial losses in the 1630s. The circumstances of his
death are not known, but he was deceased by 1650.

The surname Zaldivar comes from the place name Saldaña, which is located
in Leon.

Spelling variations include: Saldaña, Saldana, Zaldaña, Zaldana and others.

First found in the former Kingdom of Leon.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were:
Gregorio de Saldana and Francisco de Saldana, who arrived in 1517.
Hipolito de Saldana arrived in Spanish America in 1534. Juan de Saldana
settled in Peru in 1560.

Conquista del Reino de Nueva Galicia en la América Septrentrional

The Library of Congress has a lot of documents, books and manuscripts on their website. One manuscript of particular interest to this group is the title in my subject line, written by Mexican lawyer, Matias de la Mota Padilla in 1742. It is hand-written, but very legible. It contains a lot of names of people and places dating from the Conquest to 1742 in Nueva Galicia. The link to the Library of Congress is already in the links section. You can find the book by clicking on "Collections" and then browsing through the list of Selections from the National Library of Spain.
