San Jose Sate Library

Hey everyone so im currently at the San Jose State Library what interesting books can I find here about early settlers in Mexico or something interesting that falls in that category.

what does PRIMO-HERMANO actually mean??

I'm a lil' confused:

Does primo-hermano mean that both sets of parents are siblins to each other or can just ONE parent from one cousin be a sibling of ONE parent of the other cousin?

Comments

Comment

According to the RAE Dictionary:
Primo hermano, na.

Primos hermanos are first cousins. So, two persons that share at least one grandparent are primos hermanos. Typically they share two grandparents, and in some cases they may share three or all four, like the example you described.

Any info on Ambrosio De Armas or Quiteria De Velasco??

Does anyone have any info on both of these individuals i'm trying to find their parents they are both from Nochistlan Zacatecas Mexico.I descend from their child Juan Jose De Armas.

Have you looked at all of the baptisms and marriages of all of the Armas in
Zacatecas? Sometimes there can be clues found in those records. You should
also try looking page by page through the volumes of Información
Matrimonial to find clues. Those records aren't indexed. You might find
info on Ambrosio de Armas and Quiteria de Velasco in there.

Here are two baptisms you should look for the written records on -

Hi Abram,

I think you've been searching for them on family search only by typing the exacts names you have. You have to be aware that sometimes the surnames of both parents are not mentioned in the records. Also sometimes, the surname or names can change to one similar but not the same such as Velasco for Velasquez, as one of these records I'm passing to you do. Here's what I've found.

José Francisco A. Alvares parents listed as Juan Manuel A. and Jacinta Quiteria Albares.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N1PV-T5S

Simon Antonio, parents listed as Juan Ambrosio and Quiteria Velasques
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVQ8-ZHL

Juan José Fermin, parents listed as Juan Ambrosio and Quiteria de Olaya
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N8QV-WSZ

José María, parents listed as Juan Ambrosio and María Quiteria
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVQD-C7P

María Francisca parents listed as Juan Ambrosio de Armas and Quiteria de Velasco
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVQ8-VQT

In my opinion all these children are from the same couple, this changes of names do happen. I advise you to try to do the same thing with the marriage. Just try to put on the range of years correctly, the place and only one of the couples names like "Ambrosio" or "Quiteria" without the surname. You'll have a great amount of couples but you need to check for them to see if the surname is wrong written or translated and that's the reason you don't find it.

Good luck, hope this helps you.

I really don't agree on most of these individuals being duaghters and sons of Juan Ambrosio De Armas and Quiteria De Velasco. And the reason why is becuase the last names and some of the first names of the parent are really different. The only one i do agree on is the Francisca being the duaghter of Juan and Quiteria but the rest nope not feeling it.

Hi there Enrique

I tried to do what you told me and I found this one Quiteria De Belasquez record marrying a Joseph Tadeo in the year 1735 in Nochistlan Zacatecas. You think this may be the same Quiteria De Velasco wife of Juan Ambrosio De Armas?

Abram,

Don't give up and keep trying. After 9 long years of searching, I finally found my father in-laws birth record. Everyone always said he was born in 1901 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. I exhausted the search for the films of 1901, there's about half a year missing.

Today I found his birth record, he was born in 1902 in La Cienega, Nochistlan Zacatecas. I thought I'd never find it and that it was missing from the 1901 records. When he was alive, he had a surrogate birth record made in Nochistlan to which several people had to attest that they knew him and his parents and knew he was from Nochistlan and from the year 1901. He was born the 9th of January 1902 and baptized the 25th of January of the same year. Antonio Carrillo, son of Francisco Carrillo and Mariana Jauregui.

So you see, it's not always easy, you have to keep at it and not give up.

Yup,
It's even meant for me. I have so many brick walls and this is just one of them. I must keep plugging along, look for all the possible clues and in many cases go back and re-look at some of the films I'd already reviewed that I thought I'd completed.

I was searching for a marriage record for Petra Antonia Corvera - 25 Apr 1797 - La Inmaculada Concepcion, Matelhuala, San Luis Potosi,  Mexico
and came upon a notation about March and April that was written above the word Mayo 1797...(Top of left side of page).

Abram,

You still have a lot to learn about genealogical research. I never asked
you if you have found or looked at the marriage record. I was asking if you
have looked at the marriage records for other people with the surname
Armas, those records can sometimes provide clues, as can baptisms for other
people with the surname Armas.

I was hoping you were going to understand what Enrique Agraz pointed out,
especially since you have seen this with other families. The surnames won't
always be spelled the same and can sometimes be transcribed incorrectly.
Remember Alba and Albarez? That should have been a clue to you for future
investigations.

The second link I had given you mentions the parents as Juan Antonio de
Armas and Quiteria Velasquez but that could be due to a bad transcription.
The names and links that Enrique provided make it even more believable.
They likely transcribed Ambrosio incorrectly as Antonio. Take note of the
godparents of all of the baptisms. Sometimes the granparents are padrinos.
Other times they can be aunts, uncles, or cousins.

After you have done that don't forget to go through the volumes of
Información Matrimonial.

I had a question why are all the individuals i come across say espanoles doesn't that mean spanish??

Comment

Abram,

Actually, you can learn most of it in a short amount of time. What you need
to do is listen. It seems many things said to you in the past went ignored
or in one ear and out the other. An example being both Enrique and I
told you to look at certain baptisms and you said you are not feeling it.
This is not about a gut feeling. It is about reading original records to
arrive at logical conclusions. It is also listening and doing what has been
suggested to you by people that have been doing research for a long time
and have seen first hand what has to be done to try to get past brick
walls. Just because I say "can" does not mean "will" but there is no way to
know until you try. After you have finished all of the baptisms, marriages,
and informacion matimonial volumes you can then start to look through the
dispensas.

Yes, the term español means spanish. In other words they are of Spanish
ancestry. They could be at times actually be mestizo or castizo and be
called español. There is no telling how many generations they had been in
Mexico if that is what you are trying to figure out. The only way to be
sure they were born in Spain is by finding a document stating they were
born in los Reinos de Castilla. Sometimes they are referred to as
peninsulares for having been born the in the Iberian Peninsula. However, I
have never seen the term peninsular in a sacramental document. The later
peninsulares would not allow criollos, Spaniards born in Nueva España, to
hold certain offices so they led the revolt causing the Independence of
Mexico. Some of these criollos were Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Pedro
Moreno, and Francisco Primo de Verdad y Ramos. The first two were my
distant relatives. The first considered Padre de la Patria fought for equal
rights of all of the people in the caste system and the elimination of
slavery 50 years before the Civil War or the Emancipation Proclamation of
the U.S.

You should have now learned about matrimonios, bautismos, velaciones,
información matrimonial, dispensas, errors in transcription, use of
different surnames based to honor the grandmother or greatgrandmother,
spanish words used in those documents, etc.

If you get stuck on some terms you can look them up here
http://www.somosprimos.com/spanishterms/spanishterms.htm

Hopefull all of this helps you grow as a person since some of it can be
carried over in real life such listening to people with experience and
using logical deduction.

Armando

Hola,
Gracias por sus comentarios. No estoy seguro si habia

The timing of events would lead one to believe that his first wife Josepha Valenzuela died during childbirth or shortly thereafter.

Comment

Hello everyone,
Although this dispensa relates to his son, I do believe
the original Juan Martin Suarez del Real had a fourth wife.
I read the dispensa for him and Thadea de Soto from
1734. It states that he had been a widow twice already.
It mentions his first wife as Petrona Carlos de Godoy,
Lorensa Madera who I thought was the first was actually
the second. Thadea de Soto was third and the fourth was
Michaela Rosales in 1737. Did this guy have bad luck
or what?

My 5th GGF Francisco Suarez del Real (brother to Juan Martin Suarez del Real III) was married to Felipa de Soto (b: abt 1712), daughter of Simon de Soto y Marcela Marques de los Olibos. Most likely this is the same Simon de Soto.

Who has a good GEDCOM of the de Soto family? It now looks like Thadeo de Soto was one of four wifes to Juan Martin Saurez del Real II.

Esteban,

Here is what I have on Santiago de Pedroza & Maria de la Cruz;

Santiago De Pedroza died between 1698-1707 married to Maria De La Cruz

Children;
Juana Pedroza Bapt. 08 June 1692 Lagos De Moreno, Jalisco. Married Joseph De Robalcaba Aug 17, 1707 in Jalostitlan, Jalisco.(this is my wife's downline)
Maria Pedroza Bapt. 23 April 1693 in Lagos De Moreno
Jertrudis Pedroza Bapt 22 May 1697 in Lagos De Moreno
Franco Pedroza Bapt. 02 Nov 1698 in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco.

In my notes I have a possible Baptism for Santiago Pedroza, which I have not researched yet, this baptism is dated 22 July 1668 in Lagos De Moreno and the Parents are listed as Marcos De Pedroza & Maria De Nava.

Hopefully some of this will help you in some way and if you can add to what I posted that would be great.

Best Regards,

On the following website
http://historiasyrecuerdosdeencarnaciondediaz.com/macias.html#num37 (which
has some errors so be careful) it says the following - "Don Santiago de
(González-Leal 1983:116)"

Bill Figueroa might be able to point us to that información matrimonial
since it's not in the index of información matrimonial records created by
George Fulton. Once that información matrimonial is found we can say these
were two different people named Santiago de Pedroza

Santiago de Pedroza y Nava was baptized 22 July 1667 in Lagos de Moreno.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18567-42351-10?cc=1874591&wc…

The following record has the wrong year
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NRVT-NL9

His parents Marcos de Pedroza y Alba and María (Isabel) de Nava were
married 10 August 1657 in Lagos de Moreno

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-24784-65?cc=1874591&wc…

Marcos de de Pedroza y Alba was the son of Santiago de la Pedrosa and Juana
Bautista de Alba y Retamosa. There is no baptism record for this Marcos and
no marriage record for his parents. I can't go any further back on this
line.

María (Isabel) de Nava was the daughter of my ancestors Tomás de Villalobos
y Pérez de Nava and Catarina Macías Valadez y Villegas. Tomás de Villalobos
y Pérez de Nava was the son of Cristóbal de Villalobos and María Pérez.
Catarina Macías Valadez y Villegas was the daughter of Pedro Macías Valadez
and Luisa de Villegas. Contrary to what many people have in their trees,
books, and websites Pedro Macias Villegas that married Luisa de Villegas
was not the Pedro Macias Valadez baptized 11 July 1619 son of Felipe Macias
Valadez because Pedro Macias Valadez and Luisa de Villegas had their first
child on 30 January 1617 (Catarina Macias might have been born even earlier
but there is no baptism record for her). It's not possible for Pedro Macias
Valadez to have had children before he was baptized, therefore they are two
different Pedro Macias Valadez.

Armando y Esteban,

No he encontrado ningún documento que lo
compruebe.
contraer matrimonio. Esa dispensa todavía no la he buscado.
directamente in microfilm. Seguiré buscando.

Armando y Esteban,

claramente. El enlace es el siguiente:

The dispensa for Nicolás Ramírez Pedroza and Andrea de los Dolores Romo de
Vivar Martín del Campo recently indexed at
http://www.guadalajaradispensas.com/2012/09/1772-1773-fhl-source-film-1…
that the Santiago de Pedroza that the original poster was looking
for was the son of Marcos de Pedrosa y Alba and María Isabel de Nava
(daughter of Tomás de Villalobos y Pérez de Nava and Catarina Macías
Valadez y Villegas)

The definición de parentesco is on the following page -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18402-45180-83?cc=1874591&wc…

Javier Sanchiz Ruiz shows the spouse of this Santiago de Pedroza to be
María de la Cruz Martín del Campo Isassi the daughter of Nicolás Martín del

David,

Thank you for the translation. I'm disappointed that this seems to refer to Pilar as a female. Is it possible that Pilar is male? :) I thought I was so on point. My Great Grandfather Pilar's birthday was October 11, 1889 (a one day difference) and considering I seems they share the same parental names. Do you think that considering all the writing errors in this document that it could be my great grandfather? Thank you for taking the time to look over this record for me. Juanita Henniger

Comment

Juanita,

The phrase "un infante de nueve dias nacido" definitely refers to a male child. I unthinkingly assumed that Pilar refers to a female. I also made the mistake of assuming that a "madrina" meant
that a female child was involved. I agree with you that this record of Pilar's baptism refers to a boy. Sorry.

No David do not apologize. I appreciate all the help. I have 3 years of high school Spanish and that was 30 years ago. Unfortunately, I have seldom had taken the opportunity to keep up my skills. So I find myself struggling to understand the documents. And then add the horrible handwriting and the different script styles and the abbreviations all this at times wants me to pull my hair. So, people like you giving of your time to help is so much appreciated.

Could I impose on you once more? From the marriage license I assumed Pedro's father was Fulgencio, but the baptismal record says Flortina or Flortino would in your experience a name be spelled so different?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20473-6640-16?cc=1860864&…

Thank you again,

Juanita Henniger

Comment

Juanita,

I see no reasonable similarity in sound or spelling between 'Flortina/o' and 'Fulgncio'. There's always a margin for discrepancies in baptismal documents. Remember that the
parents were not always present at the baptism. Information was provided by the godparents. Also the name could have been heard inaccurately, etc. The marriage record
you included clearly shows 'Fulgencio' as the name. Unable to provide much more help than to say it's an imperfect science.

Pedro was baptized as Pedro Celestino Valdez Hernandez on 30 May 1850. He
was the son of Fulgencio Valdez and Cecilia Hernandez.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JM4V-R68

The marriage document also mentions Pedro as the son of Fulgencio Valdez
and Cecilia Hernandez.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20420-25423-54?cc=1860864…

Florentina was probably a sister of Pedro since she was the godmother of
Pilar.

Comment

Thank you Armando,

I wondered if Florentina might have been an unmarried sister of Pedro. I'm going to keep searching and hopefully I find Florentina. Thank you again. I do appreciate it.

Lol, the thought did come to my mind that Pedro and Matina might have had a child for every year they were married since birth control was not practiced. But like I said I did find a set of twins in another parish whose parents were Pedro and Matina. Twins do run in the family. I also found where Fulgencio and Cecila had a set of twins Flipa and Santiago ;)so those little girls are looking like they could be part of the family tree.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. It helps tremendously to bounce off ideas and thoughts with other people.

Thank you David. I've been trying to wrap this marriage license around the dates. The marriage was in 1877 and Pilar was born in 1889, his brother was born in 1902 both of them had the same maderina both say that Pedro was from San Pedro. I will have to research the area. But the marriage date bothers me and gives me lots of questions. Did they not have children for 12 years? Did they move? Are the twin girls I found in Neustra Senora del la Asuncion who were born in 1902 with parents listed as Pedro Valdez and Matena Sandate part of the family or is this another set of parents and no relations. The big question is what happened between 1877 and 1889 and can i find another marriage license for these children who were born from 1889-1902. Lol, so it's back to drawing board for me. Thank you again David. I appreciate all you've done.

Juanita Henniger

Comment

Pedro Valdez and Matiana Sandate probably had lots of children between 1877
and 1889 but the records are probably missing for those years which makes
it seem they didn't have children for that time period.

Occasionally I have had the same problem, but I found that if I went back to the previous page or forward one page then to the page that was blank/black it was then viewable...

I also was experiencing a large gray area at the bottom of a page...again going back to the previous page, or forward to the next corrected that situation.

In check the page that you noted in your posting, it loaded but with a gray area at the bottom of the page, so I went back to the previous page and than to the one you cited and it completely loaded fine.

For me this was happening prior to the new format...At first I thought it was just my computer not loading the page/s fast enough, really don't know why it happens.

Laura,
When it first came out it looked all black and then a scale appeared that tells you that there's a new feature to family search, that with this scale, you can now see the entire page. This is a great feature. See if you can open it and use the scale. Rather than having to use the little hand to move the page around, you can now move the scale to view all of the page in a smaller scale and then by moving the scale, it enlarges the photo on the spot, depending on the +/-.

Thanks for this discovery!

I have taken a look at the research that you have done on your family, especially on the Valdez-Sandate marriage. Instead of looking in Cerdo, San Luis Potosi look in Mexquitic de Carmona, San Luis Potosi. Here is a link to their marriage record: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20473-6640-16?cc=1860864&…

From that marriage record I have been able to identify her christening date, siblings, parents and her grandparents. I have only been able to identify them, I haven't been able to look at the records yet. If you would like, I can send you a list of the people and the dates to research.

I'm not familiar with Mexico and the states so I have been doing some reading and research to help me better identify where my ancestors lived. But from the this record I see that we have been looking for my great grand mother in the wrong place. Thank you so much. This is extremely helpful. I'm going to try a different year today. I am having trouble reading and understanding Pedro's parents names. If you could help me with that I'd appreciate it. Mario, in the films of monte Escobedo there are some people with the lastname Berumes maybe Berumen thata married with Sanchez-Castellanos. I recomend to search in Monte Escobedo because is a key that many people did not do it. Monte Escobedo was a town with many last names of Jerez and Tlaltenango, Berumes,Martinez de Barragan, Sanchez-Castellanos, Escobedo, Marquez de los Olivos,De la Torre, Carrillo, Felix de Arellano, Ulloa, Soto, del Real, Ruiz de Esquivel, Renteria, Gamboa, Bermudes de Castro, Casas, etc.

I am waiting the films of Colotlan that will be the other lost key to complete the search.

Gracias.

Thanks in advance. I believe I had already searched those links and didn´t find civil registration for the years I´m looking for but maybe I passed them by without noticing them so I´ll go ahead and take a look again. In any case, thanks for the heads up I´ll post later if I find what I´m looking for.
