This couple is my current "brick wall," too in tracing my Angulo line back. I had been looking for them in Jalostotitlan.
On 22 Jan 1741, Maria Josepha Villa Senor married Joseph Manuel Lozano. Her parents were Francisco Villa Senor and Juana Angulo.
On 7 May 1742, Josef Antonio Villa Senor married Anna Francisca Lozano. His parents were Francisco Villa Senor and Juana Angulo, defunto. So it appears Juana Angulo died sometime in 1741 or early 1742.
Josef Antonio seemed to take the surname Angulo, and the couple had eleven children that I can find.
I wonder if Maria Josepha and Josef Antonio are the two children you mention, or if you found others.

I have a Calvillo, Ags. Civil Records entry showing her death March 7, 1940 at the age of 80 anos de edad, in the Defunciones records 1938 - 1942 page 32 of the year 1940. image no.

David Serna curiously I have just noticed the name listed in the typwritten index of the year 1940 ( Index is found on image no. 254 of 565 ) is Maria Dolores .. ? which is the name listed in document as the deceased mother. Would the index have been assembled after the year had ended making the index entry just an error..?

Comment

This is really hard to read, but by comparing to other records I could figure out some words:

In the following record they mention again LA TERESA as a place where a witness lives, and it is also a Serna family record.

Hi Welester,

There was a Liborio Batta in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco in the late 1800s. He was famous for starting a band there and continued playing after his death. He wrote many banda songs that are still played during the carnaval bullfights.

I have an old picture of the band from 1907, unfortunately he's not in it but there's a Jose Batta in the picture. Maybe it's his son or brother. If you're interested I can email it to you.

I have mentioned to the group that many if not all of the last names had origins in the states of Jalisco , Aguascaliente and Zacatecas .

Thanks again,

Hola Miguel:

He encontrado en mis ancestros

No me gustó.

An "S" in Spain and "Z" in Americas

I apologize if this question has been asked, I did a search and could not find a substantive answer here. It is fairly common knowledge that Spanish names in the Americas have "Z" instead of "S".

Paul, no I wasn't familiar with the book. It does seem to be a good one.

Henry, your welcome.

Emilie, familysearch will provide results for alternate spellings most of the time but every once in a while some are missed for whatever reason. Ph comes from Greek via Latin, as do Th and a version of Ch as in Christobal. I can definitely understand the difficulty in relating people's names with their Latin equivalent.

Joseph, in 1492 Antonio de Nebrija wrote that there was a difference in the pronunciation in Spanish but currently the Royal Academy of Spanish states there should be no difference in the pronunciation. http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltObtenerHtml?IDLEMA=78019&NEDIC=Si The ambiguous use of the v/b show us there was no agreed upon rule of spelling for those periods and the priests found no difference in the pronunciation.

Thank you Armando, you have helped clear up a mystery for me: my mother was from New Mexico, descended from Pueblo Indians and the first Spaniards to explore the North. She used to talk about a big b and a little v, and I would get so frustrated explaining to her that neither was big or little, that they were distinct. I wrote them both in capital letters for her, and told her that those were "big" letters, and then I wrote them both in lower case and told her those were small letters. She didn't understand. She said that was the way she was taught. Since she was English speaking, I couldn't figure out who would have taught her that until I now recall that her father had hired a teacher from Mexico to home school his and the neighbor's kids in proper Castilian. It didn't take; she always spoke the dialect of her region.

Emilie,

My parents would say in spanish to distinguish the V from the B, "V de Vaca or B
de Burro".

To this day, this is still how I distinguish one from the other.

V de vaca and b de burro, as well as b grande and v chica, is still used to
this day in Mexico to describe those letters when dictating the spelling of
a name or word. The correct way, in Mexico and Spain, is to say be for b and
uve for v.

I also call B "be grande" and V "ve chica" since they do have different sizes when writing in lowercase, or "be de burro" and "ve de vaca".
B is also called "be labial" since it is supposed to be pronounced by joinng your lips (labios) while V would be "ve labiodental", since you have to pronounce it by touching your lower lip with your upper front teeth (dientes).
Indeed V is also called "uve" since it is the V that looks like an U.
In Mexico we pretty much pronounce both as B, just as we pronounce both Z and S as S, but in Spain they pronounce the differences.

A little late, but better late than never. The real diference stands on a portuguese vs. spanish origin. But remember that our ancestors weren't too strict with spelling, so it's not uncommon to find alternative writing in names and lastnames. For example: the last name Chavez was written Chaves in Portugal, and so was Gonçales, or Gonçalves, Alvares, etc. But don't mind, in old times, people would write it in any way.

In a Nuestros Ranchos message from 2006, Corrine Ardoin made the following statement:

"Also, because spelling was done phonetically, you can determine where an
ancestor was from in Spain by how they spelled words, some of which are
regionally distinct by Spanish provinces, whether associated with the church
or nobility, etc., because of how they anunciated their words".

It seems that the use of "s" and "z" interchangeably was a regional thing, in Spain and Latin America. It was just customary to use "s" or "z", depending on where one lived.

In English
There are three distinct subjects that are touched on. There is the subject
of pronunciation and phonetic spelling, the subject of the -ez versus -es
suffix, and also the subject of the surname Chavez. I'll start with
pronunciation. It hasn't always been the same in México or Spain. There have
been many changes over the centuries and therefore would be very hard to
distinguish which sound the writer intended at that time in that region and
which social class the person was from. In 1492 Antonio de Nebrija wrote the
first work dedicated to the Spanish language and its rules, also the first
for any Romance language, and dedicated it to Queen Isabel. What he wrote
about the z is that it's sole purpose is for the diction of words of Greek
It
seems that over time the z became used more and currently there is a
distinction of the c, s, and z used by a majority of Spain that began in the
16th century. Latin America and a few parts of Spain do not have the
distinction and have what is called seseo, and the speakers seseantes, since
those three letters are all pronounced as /s/. Examples of the /s/ sound in
these words regardless of the letters used are - casa, caza, cierto, zapato,
and cereza. In Latin America we also pronounce all the surname suffixes of
-ez and -es the same. In Spain those words don't all have the /s/ sound,
some have the theta /θ/ which sounds like a lisp to us. They also pronounce
the surname suffixes the differently with the s having the /s/ sound and the
z having the /θ/. Since in Mexico the seseo is used I don't think the
spelling of the name would be based on the pronunciation. As for the surname
suffix -es becoming -ez in the Americas, what I have found is that -ez is
the accepted form in Spain although -es can also be found regardless of era
or area. The subject of pronunciation and phonetic spelling could be brought
up again but I don't see how each instance could be proven without notations
of some kind stating that the writer wanted to convey a specific sound.
Let's use Ruiz de Esparza and Ruis de Esparsa as an example. We know their
lineage and regional origin and we know that the changing of the spelling is
unrelated to their origin but I don't know that we can say when they
pronounced it any certain way. As far as the surname Chaves/Chavez there
doesn't seem to be an agreement on the origin. Different sources say
different things ranging from being Portuguese for llaves to Basque for
"casa de abajo".

Mencionan tres temas distintos.

Yes, thank you, Armando. I always have to use interchangeably the s and z in order to find records in the indexes, such as for the name Zamora/Samora. I forgot to try Cerrato for Serrato.

Also, I have had trouble locating a Felipe, and I finally found him in the 1700s in La Barca spelled as Phelipe. So I figure the "ph" came from the Latin? Also, the Catholic church in El Paso Texas (Sacred Heart) has many forms printed in and fill-in information written in in complete Latin. I find my Marias as Mariam, Eligio as Eloia, Vicente as Vincentio, Petra as Petrum, etc. Doesn't make it easy to find people in the indexes.

I'm also curious of the letters "b" (grande) and "v"
(chica).  Other than the fact that "b" is pronounced with a slight touching of
the lips and the "v" without doing that), I've noted a common interchange of
those letters  i.e. Banuelos / Vanuelos, Chabes/ Chaves, Borrego / Vorrego,
etc.  Any thoughts of it's origins on that?

Reliable Source

Is J.W. Imhoff's, Genealogiae viginti illustrium in Hispania Familiarum 1710, considered a reliable secondary source among serious genealogists?  Thanks so much, Alice

I too have found this problem in the Zacatecas records. It seems people there (Tepetongo) used several surnames interchangeably. Abuelos paternos means paternal grandparents, the baby's father's parents.

Both men and women in some cases used their mother's surnames interchangeably with their father's surnames for some reason. I found one way around it; I would look for the records of the siblings of the baby, and see what names were given for the paternal and maternal grandparents, then I would use the one that they used most of the time, especially if it followed the paternal line. Also check for the records for the baptisms of the baby's parents to see what names they gave for their grandparents. Does that make sense?

Looking at old church records for my great grandfather, Teodoro Escobedo, it shows "AP Estevan y Francisca Lozano" which I've always assumed meant his grandparents were Estevan Escovedo and Francisca Lozano (maiden name). However, with the help of that link I put up I found a church record for one of Teodoro's brothers, Enrique, but it was listed as follows: "Enrique Losano" and "AP Estevan Losano y Francisca Lira". It also shows Teodoro's father as a Losano, Gabino Losano, which has confused me. My question is "AP" stands for abuelos paternos right? That would be the grandparents of the person being christened or born, in this case Teodoro right? Or would AP be an older ancestor and am I missing an ancestor? I was told our family came originally from Jalisco but most of these, in fact all, are in Zacatecas which I knew we also came from, just not this far back. Were there a lot of mistakes on the old church records? They have always

Emile, that does help. It has been confusing at times with the surnames changing so often. I tried searching surnames and it does help. By the way did you see my other post about the website where you can view actual church documents??? It's pretty neat.

Comment

Yes, I have seen that website. Before Family Search started putting their microfilms online, we had to go to a Family History Center at the local Mormon church and send for the films, then when they came we had to use their microfilm viewers to view each film The film numbers appear on the index in that website. Most of us here have viewed the microfilms tediously for years, and it is great that they are now online. We can hardly wait til they get to Jalisco and Zacatecas. It seems they are putting up each state in alpha order, so Aguascalientes is already online. You have come in to Family Search website at a good time.

Hi Emilie,
They already have online a lot of records form Zacatecas and just a few from Jalisco in the Beta site. They are under "Mexico Catholic Church Records". Aguascalientes is under "Mexico Civil Registration".

And yes, the BETA site is pretty cool... unless you compare it with it's predecessor, the PILOT site ;)

Victoriano,

Do you or other members know if it's possible to download one or all image files in the Beta Site. I'd like to be able to download all records pertaining to Jalpa, Zacatecas, or any other site location for that matter. The reason for this is that you never know when "something" happens and these records might become unavailable for whatever reason. I'd like having the satisfaction of knowing I can control and access these records at any time without having to go online.

Hi Ruben,
Yes, you can download the images, one at a time. There is a "Save" buttom at the top of the image. However, all are dowloaded with the same name, so you have to change the name of each one. Make sure you can open the image after changing the name. You can change the name of the file while saving it, this is one of the few advantages Beta has over the much better Pilot.
This is an example of the names I give my saved files:
"0605211 B SM Parras 1760_1764 Juana Perez.jpg"
Where 0605211 is the number of the original microfilm, B indicates Baptisms, SM is the church of Santa María, Parras is the town, 1760_1764 are the years that Beta collection covers and finally the name of the person(s) in the document.
Other examples:
0035167 BEsp AsSgo DF 1536_1546 1552_1589 Jph Treviño.jpg
0605234 M SM Parras 1785_1796 McosFlores MicPerez.jpg

By the way, Aguascalientes is both under "Mexico Catholic Church Records" and "Mexico Civil Registration". They may (or not) upload more records next week and they plan to upload more every month or so by the middle of the month. If you don't see the records for the town you are looking for, you can go to Feedback, ask them to upload them next time and cross your fingers ;)
Good luck!

Historia de Totatiche Tomos I and II for sale

I have a number of copies of Esteban Valdes Salazar's books: Historia de Totatiche Tomo I and Tomo II.

The first volume includes a history of Totatiche including some genealogical information such as a census of the 100 Tlaxcaltec families that arrived in Colotlan in 1591 and some transcriptions of old Colotlan Franciscan Convent marriage and baptism records from the late 1600s and early 1700s related to localities around Totatiche.

For anybody who is descendant from the JARA / FERNANDEZ DE JARAQUEMADA lineage in Totatiche, Ed Farias at Borderlands books is again carrying the book on this lineage by Maurilio Valdes y Jara.

He is also carrying the VALDES de Totatiche book which documents the descendancy of Leandro VALDES by the same author.

Both books are available at:

http://www.borderlandsbooks.com

Simply type "Totatiche" into the search field.

Also, if anyone would still like either Tomo I or Tomo II of the Historia de Totatiche books by Esteban Valdes Salazar, I have those available for $20 each plus $5 shipping for either one or two books. Please contact me privately at arturo [dot] ramos2 [at] gmail [dot] com.

However, I wanted to share my experience, and perhaps it may be something else for you to explore:My father was born (1912) at Hacienda del Astillero. The church for that Hacienda is called, if I recall correctly, Nuestra Senora, Maria de Los Refugios. An Image can be seen here:http://valparaisozac.webcindario.com/fotovalpa.html#(see under haciendas [not iglesias]- last photo on right). His baptismal record is held at La Purisima church in Valparaiso, Zac., which is the Jurisdictional center (akin to the county seat) - also where civil records for the area would be found. The records for many ranchos in the areas surrounding Valparaiso are found in Valparaiso. It may be that the records you seek are in a larger nearby town.

Arturo,

I found a Ma. Trinidad Gonzalez Casillas, daughter of Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas in the Jalpa Matrimonios 1827-1838 files, image #89, via the Mormon Church beta search records.

Ma. Trinidad was born in La Villita and married Fermin Pereira Baldovinos (Fermin Pereida Valdovinos) from Ojo de Agua on 9/19/1831.

Assuming Ma. Trinidad was approximately 20 years old when she married, she would be born about 1811. This means that you will not find Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas in the Jalpa Matrimonio 1827-1838 files.

Hello Group,
I'm been researching the Gonzalez line and I have hit a wall in Jalpa. I am stuck in my inability to find information for Jose Maria Gonzalez who married Julia Casillas. I have found two of his three of his children, Simon, Maria, and Lucas. Lucas is my direct descendant. Based on a marriage bann and marriage for Simon in Teul in 1865, I suspect that Jose Maria married Julia around 1830 (Simon was 35 at his marriage and was from Jalpa). Maria's wedding in 1869 took place in El Plateado (no age given for her--her husband was about 26) and she was from La Villita (between Jalpa and Huanusco). However, I've looked at the Jalpa weddings for 1827-1838 and the Tabasco film for this time period, and I didn't find Jose Maria's or Julia's wedding.

I also looked at Tabasco's bautismos for 1826-1838 and haven't found any baptisms for Simon his brothers and sisters. I've already ordered the film for the next decade to see if I can find Lucas' or Maria's (or other's) baptism record. But so far, I haven't found ANY baptisms for Jalpa in the Tabasco records.

I'm wondering where else I may find baptisms for people from Jalpa?

Also I am going to La Villita in December and was going to try to see the records of the churches in Jalpa and La Villita. Have any of you had success getting access to the books? Any suggestions for how to talk to the priests?

As a side note, I have found some interesting things about my direct ancestor's, Simon, family troubles. He married Valeriana Gonzales (no relation) in 1865, and she was supposedly a virgin "celibe", but there are two records of children born before the wedding, one of which may have been by another man. A few years later though she had several children by other men. The baptisms have the grandparents' info so i know it's the "same" Valeriana.

At first I suspected Simon might have died, but then I found that there were a few other Simon Gonzales from Teul de Gonzalez who had children from different women. Unfortunately, there was no info on the paternal grandparents or age that would help confirm whether these were the same Simons. if the are the same, this meant that Valeriana and Simon must have a very spicy relationship, one worthy of a few mariachi songs or a soap opera!

Look in Nochistlan, Zac. Sometimes they have records in Nochistlan for La
Villita, Jalpa, Huanusco and other surrounding Puestos, Ranchos, Pueblos or

I will try to check what I can find...Lety R

>
>
>
>
>

As far as checking the records at the church in Jalpa, just from my own
experience. When we went and asked to see their books, they showed us the oldest
book that they had, it was dated 1919. The Priest came out a little up set and
ask where we had gotten a copy of our records that we showed them, that we had
on us that was dated 1891. The church had a fire some time back and according to
him their records were burned. Don't know how LDS has gotten a hold of the
images of any records! But it's awesome.

Wish you success

I am of the understanding that each parish made a copy of their records and they
were sent to the main church and that's where LDS went to film them.  They did
not go to each parish, they filmed the copies so they were safe from the
distruction smaller churchs faced.

am I correct in this information?

Linda,

You're mostly correct, they went to the Head of the Archdiocese. I believe Jalpa
falls under the jurisdiction of Zacatecas, Zacatecas, but it could have been
Guadalajara.

According to some documents I've found online from the Archdiocese of Zacatecas, La Villita's church was in existence by the late 1800s. But there are no LDS films for this rancho, so I wonder if the older books may have been sent along to Zacatecas but not filmed?

I'm now working on a different timeline for finding Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas since Ruben spotted a wedding entry for their daughter Maria Trinidad in 1831 in the Jalpa 1827-1838 images. Plus, as Leticia mentioned, it's possible that I may find Jose Maria's town by looking for relatives of his that also named their children Lucas.

Comment

I've seen most of the films available for Jalpa, Zacatecas and they have included many individuals who were born, baptized, married and died in La Villita.

You can also try places like Tabasco, Tlatenango, Calvillo, Juchipila, Nochistlan. This area is known
as the valle de Huejucar mostly in and out of Calvillo, Ags. There is lots of movement and travel
in and out of this area where people got baptized, married, and died.

Linda, and everyone else,
So from what I read, it seems that any and all records from Jalpa, La Villita, etc., should've been sent on to Zacatecas. The reason I had asked in the first place is because I had been told that the parish in La Villita had been active and presumably was baptizing and marrying folks during the late 1800s/early 1900s. Yet there are no films for the parish. I assume that means that either no records were sent or that they weren't filmed.

As I've searched in Tabasco, I've not found more than a 1 or 2 references to La Villita. And I haven't found any references for some of the online images for Teul, Mezquital del Oro, Calvillo, that I've looked through. But I'll keep looking. As for Nochistlan, I'll take a look there for possible relatives. But I also found another "La Villita" in Nochistlan's jurisdiction (http://mexico.pueblosamerica.com/i/la-villita-15/) that I hope wasn't confusing people with "La Villita" in Jalpa's jurisdiction (http://mexico.pueblosamerica.com/i/guadalupe-victoria-la-villita/).

Thanks to all of your input and suggestions,
Arturo

area.
He notado

Hi Maria,
I have a subscription to ancestry.com and may have found a border crossing record of Juan Ybarra. I will send it to the e-mail you have listed for this site. I'm not sure if it will come through as coming from me or ancestry, so be on the lookout. If you have trouble viewing it, please let me know.
