Velasco in Aguascalientes

Who do the Velascos descend from in Aguascalientes? Who was the first in the area? After studying about the conquistadores correct if I'm wrong but I think they were all related since they had the same father or grandfather? Can anyone help me with the Velascos.

As many of you are aware Teocaltiche is only 40 miles form AG. My great-great-grandmother was named Maria Nieves Velasco and her father was Pablo Velasco, her mother Martina Hernandez. My grandfather was born on August7, 1891 so forty years or two generations, abt 1851.

In the AG phonebook a good number of Velascos and Velasco-Velasco. I am trying to research this area via LDS films and deciding when to jump to AG files.

Daniel,

The first Velasco in Aguascalientes was probably Hernando de Velasco Salinas, born in Valladolid, Spain. He emmigrated to Mexico and married Juana Lozano in Aguascalientes on 1 April 1619. They had two children, Joseph and Christobal de Velasco Lozano, born in Aguascalientes in 1622 and 1624 respectively. Joseph was baptized at the "Estancia de Xiconaque" owned by Christobal Lozano Martínez, Juana's father. Juana Lozano died after her second child was born. I have not done much research on this family.

My Velasco Lines

My Velasco lines that I've traced are Eustacia Velasco born abt. 1830 in Calvillo, Ags. and my other Velasco line is Jose Jesus Velasco born abt. 1820 also in Calvillo.I've found the marriage for Jose Jesus. On IGI, but need to order the film to find his parents.

Fiesta del 20 de Enero - Papaqui's

Enrique,

I checked the site and under Regidor/Parque y Mercado you will find Ingeniero Hector Duran Avelar, he's my first cousin. His mom and my dad (deceased) were brother and sister. My aunt lives in San Jose 75% of the time and in Nochistlan the rest of the time.

Comments

Comment

On this past trip to Nochistlan, instead of flying into Guadalajara, I found that flying into Aguascalientes was easier, less crowded and much closer to most of towns the nuestros ranchos group is doing research. For example, Nochistlan is one hour away, Teocalitche is 40 minutes awas, Jalostotitlan is 45 minutes, La Estancia, 45 minutes....you get the idea.

Most towns have websites maintained by the local goverment, (Presidencia) or by the Club Sociales organized by "paisanos" in the U.S.

Alicia, have you been to Nochistlan? South San Francisco and San Jose have large Nochistlense communities.

I begin to write a summary of the the San Sebastian Feast, but my attempts to describe it could not do it justice to the essence of the feast. Instead, I suggest you go to the link above which describes in Spanish the Feast, its origin and the devotion of the people in Nochistlan.

On nuestros ranchos site I posted some photos I took of the feast.

Santelices in Zacatecas

Arturo,
Thank you so much. Agustina Santelices was my grandmother, and this incident is indicative of the elusiveness I've encountered tracing her family. It's interesting that this unknown procurador Santelices and Agustina's father, Francisco Santelices's Panuco marriage are the only Santelices mentioned in relation to Zacatecas. Most Santelices are either from DF or Puebla. A handful are found in GTO and Queretero. Would this procurador have been living in Zacatecas or been making his recommendation from DF? Your knowledge and opinios are greatly appreciated. Again, Arturo, thank you so much for all that you do. Alice

Accessing Senores de Zacatecas

Arturo,
I really hate to bother you again, but I'd really like to read the Los Senores list. After I follow your instructions to Daniel and click the nuestros ranchos user's guide, the same thing happens when I click the second volume of Los Senores. A small icon at the bottom left says it is downloading from site, but where is it? Nothing appears before or after the downloading asking whether I want to open, save, etc. Please, what am I doing wrong.. Thank you so much, Alice -- arturo.ramos2@gmail.com wrote:

Arturo, I got it to work! And what's even better, is that I found two of my family's names--Onate and Santelices! The Onates are quite well known, but the Santelices are unheard of. Anything you could tell me about Santelices 127 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all you do. Alice

After logging in to Nuestros Ranchos, go to the link:

Or go to Files - Books and Articles

You will see there are two files as attachments to that folder. The names are listed alphabetically with the first file A-L and the second L-Z.

You can rotate the document within Adobe. I suggest you save the file and then open it from your desktop as each one is 2MB...

If you are having trouble using the site, I suggest you download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide which is available in the Files - References section.

The only mention of the surname Santelices is of a procurador (attorney general) by that name (no first name given) recommending that a tribunal show leniancy to a group of miners...

Espazo in a baptismal document

I have the listing of racial descriptions, but I have just found a description that I do not have referenced and could not find a translation out on the Internet. Is anyone familiar with the term "Espazo." It is the racial description on the baptismal document of Serapia Ledesma Baldivia born September 8, 1832 in San Miguel El Alto, Jalisco. Any help would be appreciated.

Maureen:

Can you scan and upload the document? Could it by any stretch of the imagination (imagine really bad handwriting and worn out paper) be espanol and not espazo? It is strange that they were still keeping racial information in 1832. I thought the Plan de Iguala after Mexican independence banned racial classification and seperate treatment based on caste.

In reply to by arturoramos

Dear Arturo and Fernando:
Thank you for trying. I will scan the document. I thought the practice was banned also and for some of the documents on the film, there no racial description, but then they started again sporadically. I think maybe some of the priests did not get the message! Anyway, abbreviations were used all over this microfilm with names included, however espanol was usually abbreviated Esp. and then a small "l" above the period. I will upload a sample of that also. I was wondering if they used Espazo for a Mestizo father and an Espanol mother. The funny thing was that this was a girl, but there was an "o" at the end. For the most part they were using Mestiza for a girl and Mestizo for a boy. I could not understand why this one was Espazo and not Espaza.

Dear Arturo and Fernando:
I scanned two documents and tried to put them in my album, but the links did not work, so I am trying to resolve the issue. After scanning and blowing the one with Espazo up really big, I noticed something. The "J" in Jose underneath the supposed "z" in Espazo makes the "n" look like a "z". Arturo, you are correct, really bad handwriting and old documents that are bleeding through just made this hard to read. It is Espano! So sorry, but I will try to scan the documents anyway, so you might see that the racial descriptions were still going on in 1831 and 1832 at San Miguel El Alto. I will let you know the node when I successfully scan to two.

In reply to by Maureen Bejar

Comment

I have scanned two baptismal documents from the 1830's of Antonio Gutierrez Gomez 1831 and Serapia Ledesma Baldivia 1832. On Serapia's if enlarged you can see the "J" in "Jose" under the "n" in "Espano" made Espano look like Espazo. In any event, you may see that the priests were still making racial distinctions at San Miguel El Alto sporadically throughout the 1830's. Please see links:

Would it be possible it is only careless handwritting? maybe espanol is the correct term they want to inscribe.

Hello everyone,

I also have scanned birth certificates from San Miguel el Alto from the 1830's and I have not seen the word "espazo" on mine. Could it be "esposo" meaning husband?
Is there anywhere I can see the documents that you say have the word "espazo"?

By the way, is this the only family in San Miguel that you're researching?
Many of my ancestors came from San Miguel, Jalos, Tepa and surroundings. I

Hi Maria:

My personal opinion as far as Genealogical information is concerned is:

The book contains very little information as far as family trees are
concerned, but a lot of interesting information about the movements of the
founding families of "Los Altos" (page 117) Listed under "Troncos
Familiares Pricipales" are the following: 1-Lomelí, Gallo, Gonzalez.
2-Padilla, Reynoso. 3-Issasi, Serrano, SanRoman, Ortiz de Parada,
Hermosillo. 4- Perez, Franco, Padilla, Jimenez, Reynoso,Gonzalez. 5-Barba,
Gonzalez. Each Group (1through 5) in a different area of Los Altos.

I personnaly found the book valuable because it mentions the founding
families of Jalostotitlán (pgs 144-145) : Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo (B
1591) and his wife, Ana Gonzalez Florida. I have been able to trace my
direct descendency on my paternal grandfather's side all the way back to
them through LDS church records from Jalostotitlán. (11 generations plus 2
more beyond them) Of course, they were just one one of the founding
families.

I would recommend this book to anybody that either has roots from Jalos, or
is interested in learning about the history of this area of Los Altos de
Jalisco.

I have no idea what Volume II of this book covers, but I would like to find
out...Do you have it?

Hi John,
No, unfortunately I do not have volume II of the book Jalostotitlan A Traves De Los Siglos.

My parent's just came back from Jalisco, Mexico and my father lives in a little town next to Jalostotitlan called Teocaltitan. My father knows I have a great interest in the history and genealogy of Los Altos de Jalisco. So when I asked him if he saw any new books, he said that there was a new book coming out about Teocaltitán de Guadalupe, Jalisco.

Yes, I definately agree with you about recommending this book to anyone who has roots in this area.

http://www.tienda.mijalisco.com/lista.html

Miguel Caldera and Maria Cid

Linda,
I think Cid is "Gallego", which might mean that it originates from Portugal.

Pardon me for interrupting the conversation about the name "Cid". The name has an Arabic origin. In the mid-eleventh century a great leader of the Christian forces emerged. The Arabic-speaking people called him "al said" (or "sayyid"). The Andalusian dialect used the expressiion "el sidi". The words mean "lord" as in "senor". It was an outward recognition of the man's military, political and administrative tyalents. His name is usually written as "Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar". Some writers call him "Ruy". He was from the town of Vivar, Spain about six miles from Burgos. Burgos is due north of Madrid close to the Cantabrian coast. Google and read the Wikipedia article. It's short and mostly accurate.

Dispensen. Yes, I had read about this also. There was a movie made about "El Cid" (link below) where Charleton Heston portrayed him. Very interesting. El Cid means "The Lord," from what I can understand...Thanks for sharing this very interesting information about our cultural history...

Dear Group,
Many cultures have epic poems that originated as oral history and were eventually written. Among the most famous are Homer's the Iliad and the Odyssey from Greece, The Song of Roland from France, and El Cid from Spain. I love that stuff!! Alice

When I first told my husband that I had linked with the famous Rodrigo Diaz Bivar (aka El Cid), he simply rolled his eyes and proceeded to tell there was "no such person," it's a myth... ok, what did I know, I actually believed him. But with time and more research I was able to convince him that El Cid was real...

PS.. If the Spanish conquistadores had had the foresight and appreciation that the Romans had of the Greek civilization and hadn't tried to totally destroy the Mexica/Azteca libraries and culture, we would have wonderful epic poems the indigenous emperors themselves had written. It sustains my belief in the inherent wisdom of mankind, when I read that some of our group members feel it just as important to seek our indigineous roots as those from Europe. Alice

Alice

yes you can and later if you want to update your folder that is
definitely possible. here are instructions on how to make a report from
family tree maker. Most important thing is not to include individuals
that are living both for privacy and security reasons. After you make up
the report send it to me in an email and I'll make up a private folder
for your. Here are those instructions:

okay here is how to do it.

1) First go to the oldest individual.

2) Then go to "View" and

3) then to "Genealogy Report"

4) then go to "Contents" and

5) "Number of generations to show" and pick a number that does not show
any living relatives. Probably around your grandparents. After the
report is exactly like you want it

6) then go to "File" and

7) down to "Export Genealogy report" pick the option for .rtf and save
it someplace with the name of that oldest relative and the date.

8) attach it to an email and send it to moderator@nuestrosranchos.org
with the following information:

a) Your full name
b) Your Nuestros Ranchos User Name
c) Your Nuestros Ranchos Subscription email address
d) the name of this report (maybe the name of the oldest two individuals
or just the surnames)
e) the geographical area you are researching: Specific Ranchos and the
Larger Town/Cabezera for the specific Ranchos.

I'm not sure if I've done this right. Is there
something I need to do to get less reports? Thanks=)
By the way, the family research i'm doing is for my
husband's family, his name is J. Gabriel Jimenez
Castillo.

John, can you translate this and send it back to the group right away if
you get a chance:

Sorry but I need to say this. A few days ago I went through and did my
final survey of who was going to be unsubscribed on 1 Feb 2007, but then
yesterday I noticed that some have gone in and submitted genealogies
into the "files" --> "members genealogies" Area of the group AND not
said anything about it to the group OR informed me.

If I sent you an email saying you are need to submit your genealogy
before 31 Jan 2007 AND you submitted your work into the "files" area AND
you didn't tell me. . .well don't be surprised if you get unsubscribed
anyway. Communication is king around her and you need to say something.
I can't keep track of all people and folders and everything that I'm
doing outside the group without good communication.

If you are one of those people I'd send an email to me ASAP:
NR@JosephPuentes.com or you might have to go through the process all
over again (mind you it is easy enough).

Familysearch Indexing of Digitized Films

In case you didn't know, the LDS project for digitizing films is going much faster than anyone expected. They have now begun projects where volunteers can extract documents online using special software that you can download. I did it tonight just to see what it was like and it is amazingly simple to do. It looks like it is mostly the 1900 census for the moment. I think this has to do with the standardization of the documents which makes it possible for volunteers with minimal or no training to find the information and enter it correctly.

it's only for IEs. Marge:)

Huizar families

Michael,

Do you have any genealogy software installed on your computer? If you don't you can go to www.familysearch.org and download the free PAF program through them. It is very easy to download and install, if I can do it I know anyone else can do it.
