Sánchez de Aldana

Anybody in the group a Sánchez de Aldana? I saw this message and got
interested in this Colonial Genealogist publication. Has anyone read a
copy of it? Well its a long shot but thought I'd throw it out there for
consideration.

The descent of Leonel Cervantes does not come from the first generation that you listed. Here are the first three generations that you listed:

I.- Don Miguel Sánchez de Aldana.

If you take a closer look, you will see that in the second generation you have María Manuela de Villaseñor, hija de don Antonio de Villaseñor, y de doña Luisa de Viviescas. the line of descent from Leonel Cervantes comes from Antonio de Villaseñor.

You definitely descend from Leonel Cervantes through your IV line. These lines hook up with much of my research.

I have records for the Sanchez de Aldana's in Chilchota Michoacan and Zapotlan El Grande and  Tamazula  Jalisco. They are not direct ancestors but married lines related by marriage to mine (Gutierrez de Raya and Vejar and Villasenor).  I have been trying to connect the Michoacan Sanchez de Aldana with the Jalisco Sanchez de Aldana.  I have been trying to find information on the Sanchez de la Mejorada line also, the records say they came from Tuxpan Jalisco in abt 1680 and lived in Atoyac, Zapotlan El Grande and Tamazula also.  It's so hard to find double surnames on the IGI, any suggestions? Estimado Daniel,
He remotado bastante lineas a dicho caballero.

a) Severiano

brick wall in Tamazula Jalisco and Sayula Jalisco

Hi,
I am trying to solve a couple of brickwalls in my family tree

Miguel Munguia, born in Tamazula, Jalisco in 1768 his father is Carlos Munguia and his mother Theresa de Coria.

Comments

Comment

Dear Patty,

The Brick wall of the Munguia family tree has been knocked down. I just posted the Munguia line going from Carlos Munguia III, born in the 1750's to Nicolas Munguia born in the early 1600's. Look for the post "question regarding the Mollinedo y Villaseñor line"

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Comment

Dear Patty,

My cousin also descends from your ancestor Miguel Munguia. i have different dates on him than yours. I have him as getting married on 25/ Nov/1767 so he couldn't have been born in 1768. I also have four siblings in my records and most were born in the 1740's with one born in 1751.

My cousin descends from Miguel's son Jose Athanazio Munguia Valdez (baptized 10/May/1777) and his wife Juana N. Ortiz y Zarate. Jose Athanazio Munguia and Juana are the parents of Ma. Josepha Gpe Munguia (bap. 16/Nov/1810) who married Jose Maria Ramon Natal.

Patty I also decend from this Munguia line, my ancestor was Merced (Maria

my Mothers (Dolores Gutierrez (1924-1979) paternal side.  My records go no
further than yours but I think they were in Michoacan before Jalisco but have
not been able to prove it. My records are posted on Rootsweb.com, file is called
Mexico.  You can go to the index or you can go to family tree, then to pedigree
in text form to see my lineage by putting in my Mothers name and birth date.
I hope we can be of help to each other.

Here is a record that may help the research. Sometimes the parents are married years after their kids are born. Not often, but it has occurred. One couple that I studied had five kids before they married, and it was many years after the first one had been born.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-95PP-WRS

I took another look at your question starting with Romualdo Coronado.

The two definite dates we have for him are his civil marriage in 1874, and his death in 1916. In the first, his parents are Andres Coronado and Maria Amat. In the second, the parents are Andres Coronado and Maria Mata. I've not seen Amat elsewhere as a surname, but have seen Mata before.

I did not find any civil birth records for children of Romualdo and Clara.

I found a baptism for a Francisco Coronado on 5 Mar 1869, in Villa de Cos, the son of Romualdo Coronado and Francisca Morillo, with parternal grandparents Andres Coronado and Maria Yrinea Mata, and maternal grandparents Pedro Motillo and Juana Morales. This is certainly the same Romualdo, but apparently with a first wife. (I did not find a marriage for them.) This raises a question: is your ancestor Francisco, born in 1869, the same as this Francisco? Perhaps the first wife died soon after birth, and Francisco was raised by the second, A death record might provide some evidence, but considering there are so few documents for this family, the fact that death records are more incomplete, it likely does not exist. Nonetheless, a search through the Villa de Cos church burial records would be in order.

The death record for Romualdo names a son Lucas. There is another record that names another son Julian.

I found a marriage record for Canuta Coronado, daughter (hija natural) of Romualdo Coronado, widower, and Petra Gomez, widow, and Nicolas Rodriguez, 29 Jul 1893, in Villa de Cos. I think this is the same Romualdo.

There is no marriage record for Andres Coronado, and no baptismal records for any children. I did not see any baptismal records for other Andres Coronado that I thought could be him. But since we have no clue at the present as to who his parents were, anything would be sepulation.

There may be marriage records for children of Andres, but the indexes frequently do not includes the names of the parents. The question is where to look. Villa de Cos is a good starting place, but it would mean looking through many years of marriage records. Ojuelos de Jalisco would also be a place to look. Other than these two locations the documents we have do not suggest anywhere else.

This is a tough genealogical problem, compounded with the scarcity of relevant document.

Zacatecas, Mexico, Civil Registration Marriages, 1861-1952 via ancestry.com on maria amat. my 2nd gr grandfather was francisco coronado who was born about 1869 and no death information has been found for him yet. far as i understand at one time or another he did go towards kansas where his kids were at but later on moved back to mexico .

The names on your citation looked unusual, so I took a look at the marriage record. The record is online at Family Search: Cedral, San Luis Potosí, matrimonios 1906-1910, images 444-45. It is the marriage between Jesus Coronado, age 38, widower of Maria N(illegible) Mendoza, and Maria Cruz Martines. Jesus is the son of Andres Coronado, age 65, and Maria Aleja Monte (? Her surname is hard to read) Maria Cruz Martines is the daughter of Ysidro Martinez and Andrea Rodriguez.

I see nothing in the record that connects this family to the Coronado family of Villa de Cos. This Andres Coronado, based on his stated age of 65 was a born about 1844, which makes him much younger than your Andres Coronado, who you estimated was born in the 1820s. Stated ages are often not accurate, but this seems too far off to be the same person.

You also need to be careful about the Ancestry.com indexes - the names are not always correct, so you must must always look at the actual record. "Jerico" was a name I've never seen. Looking at the record, the name is actually Jesus.

From the info here you may be able to find the birth or baptismal record for Jesus Coronado, who was a born about 1871 based on his stated age. Again, this could be off by a couple of years. This record might say where his parents were from.

Tepetongo is a little less than 100 miles from Villa de Cos by modern roads; this is not too far away to make it an unlikely connection. However, we need something that makes the connection between the family of Villa de Cos and that of Tepetongo. If there was a baptism for a child of Andres Coronado and Maria Irinea Mata, or a death record for Maria Irinea that names both her husband and parents, then we would know.

The church death/burial records are not indexed, checking them would be tedious, but might be your only option. If you decide to do this, I would suggest Villa de Cos first, then Tepetongo. If you had a marriage record for one of their children that described Maria Irinea "que vive " or "difunta " you would have a date from which to start looking. "Que vive" would mean she died after that date, and "difunta" would mean before that date. If you do find her death record, and it does not mention husband and parents, you have not gained much.

Another option would be to look at the all Coronado marriages in both Villa de Cos and Tepetongo to see if there are other children of Andres and Maria Irinea. Sometimes, but not often, marriage records will name grandparents. Looking at collateral lines can sometimes provide the necessary clues to establish the lineage.

Typical marriage ages for men are about 20-25, and 15-20 for women, but there are exceptions. Nonetheless, this can suggest the marriages to look at.

Good luck!

Hi George,

I can tell you that there was a push to index the Sinaloa Civil Registration records around the summer of 2016. I know because I indexed some records for Mazatlan from the 1860s or so. I hope that's indicative of FamilySearch/Ancestry working to bring them up for genealogical use soon.

Bertha,

A lot of the records that say Del Sagrario, Antes de la Asuncion,
Aguascalientes also say Cieneguilla, Aguascalientes, Mexico and they also
show a source film number of 299530. In the familysearch site under
Aguascalientes there is a page of films for Sagrario (Incluye Hacienda de
Cieneguilla). I went into one of those films and did a search of one of the
names found in it and confirmed the record shows up as being in 299530. I
brought this up since it can be a way to identify the Aguascalientes
volumes since they don't have the film number on the first page. The record
for Juan Joseph de Esparza is at

Hi Bertha,

Congrats on getting this far on your Ruíz de Esparza line. I descend from Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos and María Efigenia Ramírez aka Martínez de Alarcón or Martín-Alarcón. Would you happen to have the parents of María Inés Muñoz de la Barba, who married Joseph Santiago Ruíz de Esparza? I take it you descend from the Yahualica line of the Ruíz de Esparza. Santiago and Inés lived in various locations, Jalostotitlán, Aguascalientes, Yahualica, etc.

As far as Martín Ruíz de Esparza and Manuela Preciado, I have nothing beyond this point. We need to locate a document, perhaps a final will and testament, or a death record for this Martín. “Antes de la Asunción” basically means originally the parish was formally known as “Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de María de Aguascalientes” not sure why the extractors did this, it can cause confusion if someone is not informed on history.

Right now, I am wondering if Manuela perhaps is a relative of the Preciado de Elizalde a family that compounded their names in the late XVII century in Aguascalientes; Diego Preciado and Beatríz López de Elizalde, a good number of parish officers descend from this line.

As for, Martín Ruíz de Esparza y Sotelo de Xaén was son of Martín Ruíz de Esparza and Francisca de Xaén who was baptized 2 Jul 1675 in Aguascalientes. He later married Gertrudis Martínez Calvillo daughter of Nicolás Martínez Calvillo and Josefa de Velasco on 15 Feb 1699.

As for the last one, Jacinto Martín Esparza really Jacinto Martín Mateos or any of the following combinations Martín y Mateos, Martín Ruíz de Esparza or Martín de Esparza was a compound named that was formed when Alonso Martín Mateos son of Diego Martín Mateos and Teresa de las Ruelas and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza daughter of Pedro Ruíz de Esparza and Juana Lozano married on 29 Dec 1666 in Aguascalientes. This Jacinto belongs to the Martín Mateos clan not the Ruíz de Esparza, even though they are related through this marriage. Another researcher that is very well informed on Aguascalientes would be Bill Figueroa. Don't give up your only 2-3 generations before connecting to Lope Ruiz de Esparza.

I hope this helps a bit, some history too.

Hi Daniel,
Thank yo so much for that information. The parents of Maria (Ines?) Munoz de la Barba were Estevan Munoz de la Barba and Juana Gertrudis Perez Gallo. Estevans' parents were; Francisco Munoz de la Barba and Joachina Casillas. Juana Gertrudis' parents were; Josef Perez Gallo and Angela Fernandez. I believe Estevan was related to Ygnacio Munoz de la Barba and Ma. De Dolores Munoz ... since these two were the witneses in their wedding. As far as Maria (Ines) is concerned, I could not find her birth record for the longest time but recently I found, or I believe it has to be her; a Maria (Ruth) Munoz de la Barra baptized on (16 Jan 1775)so it must have been a mistake on the name.
My Esparza line was mostly from Yahualica, Ixtlahuacan, Cuquio and by the 1800's many of them moved to the Moyahua/Palmarejo Area in Zacatecas.

In re; to Manuela Preciado, I found a Nicolas Preciado married to a Maria De la cruz in April 10, 1684 but can not find any of their children. If they did she could have been around the age to be married by the 1706's. Well I do not know just guessing//

Hi Bertha,

Manuel was the son of (according to the Marriage Information taken on 7 Jan 1722) Bartolomé Alonso de los Hinojos and Juana de Amador residents of Santa María de los Lagos. I believe Bartolomé would have died in Lagos de Moreno and born in Aguascalientes. I do not know who his parents were, but keep in mind they were born in the mid XVII century. (Without proof) he was probably the son of Juan Alonso de los Hinojos and Isabel Ramírez who married in Santa María de los Lagos on 22 May 1652. I still need to verify and prove this link. Juana’s parents were Gabriel Gallegos and Juliana Gutiérrez Guerrero. This Amador/Gutiérrez Guerrero family was studied by Mariano González-Leal. I still do not know how Amador fits in.

I descend from Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos, twice in the following manner vía my mother. My maternal grandparents are second cousins, in the third degree of consanguinity as great-grandchildren of D. Mariano de Camino y Martínez de Sotomayor.

I. Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos married firstly according to the marriage information taken on 7 Jan 1722 in Aguascalientes to María Efigenia Ramírez aka Martínez de Alarcón. Secondly, he married Francisca Gutiérrez-Durón on 13 Sep 1752 in Aguascalientes. From Manuel and Efigenia: While you descend from Ana Gertrudis who married Juan Ruíz de Esparza I descend from her brother

II. José Tomás Alonso de los Hinojos who married Juana Gertrudis de Castañeda on 4 Feb 1754 in Aguascalientes. They had

III. María Josefa Jacoba Alonso de los Hinojos who married José Gregorio López-Valdés on 25 Jun 1788 in Aguascalientes. They had

IV. María Marcelina López-Valdés who married José Antonio Martínez de Sotomayor on 26 May 1819 in Aguascalientes. They had

V. María de los Dolores Martínez de Sotomayor who married Eugenio de Camino-Trasgallo on 11 Jul 1849 in Aguascalientes and veiled in Calvillo. They had

VI. José Mariano de Camino (Trasgallo) who married Arcadia de Soto on 15 May 1874 in Señor San José, Calvillo.

Thanks again for the information. It is nice to know that we are "primos" after all. I have another question for you. I have found several discrepancies on the birth or marriage certificates of our ancestors. For instance; in the birth certificate of Catharina de Esparza born Dic. 1, 1755 she was categorized as "Española Castiza" and next to her legit... parents; Juan de Esparza ("coyote") was written and after Gertrudis Alonso de los Hinojos; "Espanoles" in plural. When my GGGG-grandparent Joseph Santiago was baptized on Feb. 5 1760, Joseph Santiago and his parents were categorized as "Españoles" just as it was when they got married on Abr. 10, 1752, but when Ana Getrudis Alonso died on Ago. 31, 1790, "India " was written next to her name. It shows that she was the wife of Juan de Esparza and daughter of Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos but why would they have put india next to her if all the previous records she was categorized as "Española"? I would understand "Castiza" or even "Mestiza" but why "India"? Now I now that a "Coyote: was supposed to be the son of a "Mestizo and an Indian" so was Juan de Esparza (son of Manuela Preciado and married to Ana Gertrudis Alonso ..a "Coyote" or an Español? I did find a Juan de Esparza born Jul 2, 1731 "coyote" son of "difunto Esparza" and Maria Concepcion in Guanjuato and another in Cienega de Mata Ojuelos born on Jul 8, 1733 hijo de "de Esparza and Maria de la Concepcion" as is written in the Church record. Do you have any information on this. ???

Bertha,
Regarding some of your ancestors appearing as 'indios' instead of the 'expected caste' based on the levels of admixture between racial groups, is not uncommon. Remember, the priest would assess and decide to which group the child, the bride or the groom, belong to based upon physical atributes (skin color, type and color hair, eye shape, etc.), not upon the actual pedigree. Several years ago we discussed this briefly in NR and gave examples how for the same couple the children would be indios, mestizos, coyotes, lobos, and mulatos.

Daniel,

What is your source for "Alonso Martín Mateos son of Diego Martín Mateos and Teresa de las Ruelas and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza daughter of Pedro Ruíz de Esparza and Juana Lozano".

I am at brick wall for the parents of Alonzo Martin Mateos and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza. I havent been able to locate any dispensas pertaining to the couple, they didnt leave wills in the Aguascaliente online archive, and no parents listed on the marriage record.

Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Bueno, te agradezco nuevamente y espero nuevas noticias.

Danny C. Alonso, Paige Herrera, and Carlos Peredo have provided an arguement that has convinced me that "Benito de Islas I" and "Benito De Islas II" were the same person and that Benito de Isla's father's name of Benardino de Islas contributed to the confusion. After taking in their comments, going through my notes, and doing more research, I have come to believe that Jaime Holcombe was in error with his findings that there were two Benito de Islas having these children. However this research has led me to become more convinced of Jaime Holcombes information regarding Juana Navarro, daughter of Pertonila Moctezuma.

Thank you Danny C. Alonso, Paige Herrera, and Carlos Peredo,

Ricardo A. Ricci

Comment

Mr. Ricci, Paige and Carlos,

I do agree that Juana Navarro is the daughter of Petronila Moctezuma. That's the only thing that makes sense regarding the use of Moctezuma by Maria de Isla and her descendants. The Moctezuma was probly used not only to honor her Moctezuma ancestors but also to separate her from her sister, the other Maria de Isla.

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

When there are two people with the same name, in the same family, it is easy to confuse which one is which, so it is understandable to see the confusion created by Benito de Isla I and Benito de Isla II. More research is needed to clarify whether there were two or just one. Jaime Holcombe said that there were two but he doesn't provide his source. I believe there are two and feel that the confusion lies in which one is the father. But I wouldn't be shocked if it was proven that there was only one Benito de Isla with having children from two wives causing the confusion.

Jaime Holcombe often provided sources in his work. Jaime provided a source for his claim that Benito de Isla was married to Juana Navarro, daughter of Petronila Moctezuma. He specifically cited her will, a date and location that she was buried, and witnesses to the will. Because of the detail that he provides in his source notes, I do have Juana Navarro as his wife, and the mother of one of the Maria de Islas half sisters.

Estimados primos

All this great information is overwhelming to understand so let me add the following to the pile. the Following address is to a manuscript that Guido supposedly wrote and translated by Juan Francisco Maura the link found on wikipedia regarding Guido de Lavezares.

The situation of ages that Danny has trouble with is something that I have I my own family. My daughter was born when I was well into middle age. Most of my siblings had their kids when they were very young. My siblings have grandchildren close to the age of my daughter, with some of them older than her.

Another example of this age disparity is the recent find of marriage record in 1752 of Eusbio Orosco. The bride was a much, much younger half sister of the grooms father.

A third example was the Ruiz de Esparza line between the 1200's to late 1500's. Now that was a line that can be believed only because of records that date everyone along the way. In this line we have an even larger disparity of ages than the ages we see with the Islas lineup

I don't share Danny's confidence in this secondary source.

I believe that More research is needed to clarify the matter of whether there were two or one Benito de Islas, and at this time, I am not convinced that there is only one.
Rick A. Ricci

Comment

Mr. Ricci,

i'm not saying that there aren't two Benito de Isla's, there may be. And i agree with you, if there are two benito's, that secondary sources seem to have merged them into one person. And i'm not confident in the secondary sources at all. but, until there is a primary source that proves the secondary sources wrong, then we have to go with what's available. Also this is not a case of a daughter being born when her father was middle age, that's universally common. In fact that fits in more with my theory of an old Peninsular marrying a younger girl in Mexico. In my own tree I have more than a couple of instances where a 50 or 60 year old guy married a 15 or 16 year old girl. It's the Benito I and II theory where the dates don't make sense. If Benito de Isla I had Benito de Isla II around 1560 then Benito de Isla I and his wife would both be born around 1540, maybe her a little later but no later than 1545. Yet, she's giving birth to Benito II in 1560 when she's around 15 and then giving birth to Elvira and Maria de Concepcion in 1610 and 1615 when she's 70 and 75 years old? and of course, maybe its a different wife but again there's no proof of any of these theories so i just go with whatever small amount of secondary sources might be available.

Hi all,

I read the letters of Jaime Holcombe that were provided on the other thread about Benito de Isla and the letters do say there are two Benito de Isla's. They mention how the first Benito de Isla came alone and single and then say, "So how do two sisters suddenly turn up? No way. The following fits in generationwise":

Benito de la Isla y Labesares married N.N.

1. María de la Concepción de Islas, married Juan Delgadillo, a son of Diego Delgadillo and Isabel Calderón.
2. Elvira de Islas, married Joseph González.
3. Benito de Islas, married N.N.

i. María González de Islas, married Cristóbal Martínez Lozano
ii. Magdalena de Labesares, married Francisco González.
iii. Petronila de Islas, who apparently did not marry.

Then, Mr. Holcombe's letters provide the above ancestries and normally I would accept this, but as Danny pointed out there are definitely issues with the dates. Benito de Isla the second is listed #3 among the children of Benito de la Isla y Labesares and N.N., but I agree that Benito de Isla the second is a good 40 to 50 years older than Maria de la Concepcion de Islas and Elvira de Islas, who are said to be his siblings. For this reason, I'm beginning to believe that Danny's theory makes more sense. Either that, or Maria de la Concepcion de Isla and Elvira de Isla are in actuality the children of Benito de Isla the second and, in fact, he does not have any siblings, at least not the 40+ older ones that are being attributed to him. Any thoughts?

Danny,

What document do we have to clearly establish María de Ysla y Moctezuma as a daughter of Benito de Ysla? I did not see in the two dispensas mentioned in wikiTrees to help support this claim. With WikiTrees one needs to be very careful. People need to remember this is an ancestor to thousands of descendants and must be handled with all caution.

I would love to research more into this line, let me know if your interested.

Danny,

Looking thru my archives you are absolutely correct. This topic was actually resolved offline a number of years ago with Guillermo Tovar de Teresa. Doña Magdalena de Levazares and Doña María de Isla y Moctezuma are in fact daughters of D. Benito de Isla and (what I have noted) Da. María González de Moctezuma. However, this last González de Montezuma part is not sourced--we need a document, not sure why I did not add a note here.

My next question for the team is, how does another Da. María de Isla, wife of D. Cristóbal Martínez Lozano, Regidor Perpétuo de Zacatecas, who died on 13 May 1646 in Aguascalientes fit into this family tree? If anyone knows pardon the ignorance, I have not studied these lines in some years. Could this María be the same one as the one who married Benito de Isla?

A final thought, our María de Isla y Montezuma and this supposed María González de Montezuma--I almost want to refer to "N. de Moctezuma until we find an absolute document stating otherwise--would bring the line back to ca. 1550. In any attempt to trace this link to Moctezuma II, it could possibly be his granddaughter. Could Petronila de Montezuma and this N. de Montezuma have been cousins? Did they know each other? One question produces three more questions as Guillermo would put it., RIP.

Let the debate begin,

Daniel,

Benito de Isla had two daughter's that used the name Maria de Isla, both are listed on some dispensas and IM's as sisters to Magdalena de Lavezares. The above dispensa shows that María de Isla married to Andres Martín de Sotomayor is the legitimate daughter of Benito de Isla. And, this IM for Pedro Rodríguez and Petrona de Isla, shows that there is also a María de Isla, mestiza, hija bastarda de Benito de Isla:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-THRY-N

Since we know that there are two María de Isla's, both daughters of Benito de Isla, I think the mestiza María de Isla is the wife of Cristóbal Martínez Lozano.

"Hija natural" depends on the context. It some sentences it does mean the same thing but in others it does not. In those other cases it means where they were originally from.

I saw one case where it was used to distinguish between biological children and adopted children.

Thanks R.A. Does anyone know what documents point to the María de Isla married to Cristóbal Martín Lozano being the mestiza illegitimate daughter of Benito de Isla. Is it possible that it's the same Maria de Isla that just married twice and could it be the same person as María González de Isla y Moctezuma mentioned earlier?

- Mia

Comment

Mia,

I dont know of any actual documents that mention the Maria de Isla married to Cristóbal Martínez Lozano as the mestiza María de Isla, its just my opinion that its the same person because of the fact that there are two María de Islas. And they cant be the same person because because the María de Isla that was married to Andrés Martín de Sotomayor died in 1667:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6S67-DJR

and the María de Isla thats married to Cristóbal Martínez Lozano was already dead by 1650 according to her daughters marriage:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6QQ9-BKP

I don't know of any of these Maria de Isla's being called Maria Gonzalez de Isla y Moctezuma but I think the name Gonzalez de Isla would be formed with the marriage of Benito de Isla's daughter Magdalena de Labesares and Francisco Gonzalez.

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Hi Danny,

The Maria de Isla married to Cristobal Martinez Lozano is already identified as a sister of Magdalena de Labezares and Petrona de Isla by Armando on this thread for Benito de Isla when he discusses the letters of Jaime Holcombe and Mary Lou Montagna.

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/22972

The letters then discuss the mestiza Maria de Isla, hija bastarda, of Benito de Isla. But, since we already know that the Maria de Isla married to Andres Martin de Sotomayor is a legitimate daughter of Benito de Isla, I do agree that the hija bastarda is most likely, the one married to Cristobal Martinez Lozano.

Chris

Comment

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the sisters of Maria de Isla y Moctezuma and the number of Benito de Isla's. On the link to the other thread that Chris provided above this post, there is a mention of these female de Isla's and their general time frame given by Manny:

Maria Concepcion de Islas: b. 1600-1610
Elvira de Islas: b ?
Madalena de Lavezares: b. late-1580’s
Maria de Islas y Moctezuma: b. 1600
Maria de Islas Mestiza: b. ?
Maria de Islas (m. Cristobal Lozano): b. 1580’s
Petronila de Islas (su hermana): ca 1600 or before

I think the timeline above is generally close. Although, based on the grandchildren's marriages, I think Maria de la Concepcion de Islas and Elvira de Islas were born after 1610. But, my question is, are the above de Isla women all the daughters of Benito de Isla II or are some the daughters of Benito de Isla I. And, is there even a difference between Benito de Isla I and II? Because I have seen Maria de la Concepcion de Islas and Elvira de Islas as children of Benito de Islas I and N.N. But, if that's true and Maria de Isla y Moctezuma and Magdalena de Lavesares are the daughter of Benito de Isla II, why are they older than their aunts? Possibly, a lot older. Which although possible, seems unlikely.

Paige

Comment

There has been much confusion regarding this family because many secondary sources had merged the two Benito de Islas into one person. I believe that research has shown them to be two people and this thread has contributed to unscrambling this mess. I do believe that some aunts are younger than their nieces. More research is needed to clarify dates.

Rick A. Ricci

Comment

Paige,

i agree with you about the timeline and that Maria Concepcion de islas and Elvira de islas are definitely born after their own alleged aunts (Maria de Isla y Moctezuma and Magdalena de Labezares). And, i agree both Elvira de islas and Maria Concepcion de islas, supposed children of Benito de Isla I, were born around 1610 or later. Elvira de isla's grandaughter Manuela Gonzalez married in 1731 which puts her birth around 1710. One hundred years between the birth of grandmother and grandaughter is a long time. Maria concepcion de islas was probly born closer to 1610 but still probly after, closer to 1615. this is one of my main reasons for using just one Benito de Isla for now. If there is more evidence I can always add another one, but for now this makes more sense to me. I'm not saying there isn't a Benito de Isla II, son of Benito de Isla I, im just saying if Benito de Isla II was born around 1560 and having kids in the 1580s, it doesn't make sense that his father Benito I is having children in 1615, certainly not with the same woman that gave birth to Benito de Isla II, where she'd be close to 70 years old. Plus, there are secondary sources that suggest that Benito de Isla I is the father of Magdalena Labezares and Maria de Isla y Moctezuma. Like this passage in this book about Mexticacan by Francisco Sandoval López: "Benito de Islas, originario de Sevilla y sus nietos Diego y Bernardino González de Islas se establecieron en Nangué (hoy Cañada de Islas)." The Diego and Bernardino González de Islas mentioned in this book are the children of Magdalena Labezares, daughter of Benito de Isla. But this passage would suggest that Magdalena Labezares was the daughter of Benito de Isla I, because he would be the one from Seville and Benito de Isla II would most likely be born in Nochistlán. this is another reason i'm just using one Benito de Isla for now. of course, these are not primary sources, but so far there aren't any that contradict this as far as I can tell. The truth is there are timeline issues either way. But, ive seen many more instances of old Peninsulares marrying much younger women than I have of women having children over 60 years old. But i also agree with Manny Diez that there are dispensation issues with this family.

Daniel,

The Family History Library has microfilmed civil records from 1879 on, and not before. In the birth records there is a gap of 9 years, until 1888, for the rest of the records. The marriage records show the same gap. Either the records do not exist, or were not filmed.

Civil records may exist in a nearby community, or earlier records may not exist.

The extracted baptismal records show only one child for this couple, however, only two microfilms have been extracted, thus there may be others. The listing of microfilms suggests there may be gaps in the extant records.

It is not uncommon for children to be the church records, and not the civil records. They may be in the civil records, but not the church records. Sometimes they are absent from both, but you can find marriage records, so you know the children exist.

Ancestry.com has extracted civil records for many communities in Mexico. If you do have a subscription you can use ancestry.com at many public libraries and also at the LDS Family History Centers for free.

Looking for the parents of Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orozco

Please Help!

I descend from Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez

It appears that Joseph Eusebio de Orozco's parents, Juan Antonio de Orozco/Gutiérrez and Juana Efigenia Franco, married in Tepatitlán ca. 1720, but I have not been able to locate their marriage document.

Based on the marriage dispensation details, Joseph Eusebio Gutiérrez de Orozco & Anna Beatriz Gutiérrez were not first cousins (parentesco de consanguinidad en segundo grado igual) but rather half-aunt/half-nephew (parentesco de consanguinidad en primero con segundo grado).

If that is indeed the case, then the father of Anna Beatriz Gutierrez, Joseph Gutiérrez de Hermosillo (h.l. de Sebastián Gutiérrez de Hermosillo & María Galindo y Becerra) who married Petronila de Ornelas y Valdivia, had children before his marriage in 1702. I have identified at least two sons based on marriage dispensations. It appears that the mother of these premarital illegitimate children was a woman surnamed Orozco, but not necessarily Tello de Orozco. She could be an Orozco Agüero, or even de Loza/Orozco.

As I had mentioned, Joseph Gutiérrez de Hermosillo had at least two premarital illegitimate sons, named Juan Antonio and Andrés Gutiérrez (o Orozco) - "que D.n Joseph Gutiérres obtuvo por hijos en su Matrim.o a D.n Juan Antt.o y a D.n Andrés Gutiérrez, que es el Primero" - before he married Petronila de Ornelas in 1702.

I connected these premarital sons of Joseph Gutiérrez de Hermosillo, via the marriage dispensation of Juan Joseph Becerra & Anna Rafaela Gutiérrez, in 1790

I tried locating the marriage record of Andrés Gutiérrez and Josepha de Aguirre, so see if it mentioned their parents, but to no avail.

In regards to Juana Efigenia Franco, wife of Juan Antonio de Orozco/Gutiérrez...since no marriage record has yet been found, I discovered the name of Juana Efigenia Franco's mother to be Anna Carranza (h.l. de Andrés Sánchez Carranza & Antonia Venegas), who married an unknown N. Franco, in Tepatitlan. Because she also has Venegas in her ancestry, in 1759 Sebastián Ramírez Becerra & Manuela Venegas needed a marriage dispensation (de Afinidad). Sebastián's first wife was Anna Gertrudis Gutiérrez, daughter of Juan Antonio Gutierrez/Orozco and Juana Efigenia Franco.

Dear Steven,

Thank you very much for sharing your findings and for providing sources. Happy to go a little further on this line. I am assuming that this Andres Sanchez Carranza descends from the Andres Sanchez Carranza that is a son of Diego Sanchez Carranza. if I remember correctly, the Sanchez Carranza branch of the family had at least a couple other entanglements where they needed marriage dispensations.

I hadn't heard from you in a while and was afraid that you had abandoned genealogical research! So it was a double blessing, first to see that you have continued researching, and second that your research is helping me with my research. Please let me know if you have any lines that you want me to research.

Gracias Primo,

Rick

I called up a distant cousin to let him know what we had found out about Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez. He was shocked about the information and immediately said something about me wanting to keep this news about my family tree a secret. He went on and on as if only I descend from Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez. He was so disgusted that I never got around to telling him that the reason I was calling him was because he too descended from Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez.

By my calculations, using the variable of 8 to 10 as the number of generations in a 265 year period, and an average of five children per generations, there are between 400,000 and 2,000,000 descendants of Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez spread out mainly in Tepatitlan, Pegueros, Valle de Guadalupe, and Jalostotitlan. And yes, many thousands of descendants no longer live in Los Altos de Jalisco. There are at least a few thousand of his descendants in California. I know of at least three other nuestrosranchos members that descend from this line.

This is not the first scandalous information that.i have discoverered about my ancestors, their siblings and cousins. If I had not wanted to find scandalous or awkward stories, I should have found a different hobby. If you are a serious genealogist, you will dig up information that some people would rather stays buried.

Sooner or later, I will see my distant cousin and hand him the line showing his descent from Joseph Eusebio Tello de Orosco and Ana Beatriz Gutierrez. I kind of enjoy him thinking that he has a secret about my family tree. The longer that he thinks that it only pertains to me, and not to him, the bigger the surprise when he finds out that it is his line also.

Anna Beatriz Gutierrez's parents are

Joseph Gutierres De Hermosillo
Spouse's Name Petronila De Ornelas Y Baldibia
Event Date 22 Feb 1702
Event Place Tepatitlan De Morelos,Jalisco,Mexico

I believe that Joseph Eugenio Tello de Orosco's parents are Juan Antonio Tello de Orozco and Juana Efigenia Franco. But I'm not sure. They are related related "segundo grado". I thought that meant first cousin. Is there another relationship that is "segundo grado?"

Where would I look for the marriage dispensation?

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Mr. Ricci,

Those are the correct names of the parents. They're mentioned here in Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara in this somewhat interesting dispensa:

Danny,

Thank you for helping me out. That was unexpected. I guess Juan Antonio's mother was Tello de Orosco. I still cannot find anything on Juana Efigenia Franco. I did know something was out of the ordinary because the surnames were not the right surnames for first cousins. Please send me the link so that I may inspect the record for more clues.

Thanks again,

Your big thread in your research is "Irapuato Guanajuato back in 1977 he work as a supervisor at DF federal carrilio." Someone would have to ask many questions in Irapuato to track down a list of supervisors. It is going to be easier to track down a supervisor as records with his information were most likely kept and not thrown away. I have two uncles that worked for the railroads in Mexico, but in other states, one in management and the other an engineer. Both of them are retired and receiving a pension so maybe pension records may be a place to look. The place to start looking and asking questions is in Irapuato.

Do a google search for "finding missing family members." This will bring up a number of websites that offer suggestions, as well as organizations that can provide a service.

The usual genealogical sources are probably not helpful as information on living people is usually not available due to privacy concerns.

There is a TV reality series called Long Lost Family that presents case histories in their weekly program. This may give you some insight.

These sources are for US cases, Mexico is likely different.

Best of luck.

Comment

Mr. Lucio,
I would have done the same given the need to search for a parent lost. No Avenue or path would have been to great a walk. With that said, hopefully those among us that have given you their advice have help you along even though this was not the forum you can now cross it off your list and search it those given if not already searched. I do hope you are successful in finding your wife's father. Best of luck!

Hello,
Get a DNA test on family tree dna- you never know you may find relatives. Also there is facebook page called DNA Detectives. There are volunteers that help with this sort of project. They do help people find relatives. Rick is right, this page is more for serious genealogy. Also, I'm afraid that any records online may not help you find him today however, it can give you clues. Try Family Search its free.
Perhaps, others have more recommendations.

Good luck,
Pauline (Maven200)

While I sympathize with someone looking for a loved one, I don't think it's appropriate to use genealogy DNA tests to find broken relationships. Finding previously unknown relatives is different than searching for someone that doesn't want to be found. My genealogy research has been hindered by family members that fear their information will be used for purposes outside of confirming our research. My best friend is adopted and has wondered about her biological family her entire life. It was suggested she get a genealogy DNA test when it became available. She discussed it with me and before I put in my 2 cents, she said she didn't want to deceive anyone who wasn't expecting this as a possible use of the results. I think it's best we use the information for it's intended purpose.

Comment

This isn't the place for that type of search. "This group is for serious genealogists actively searching for lineages in the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes of Mexico."

Comment

yes i know that as i have been searching for several years on my family did not see the hurt to put it out there if someone is wanting to find thier biological father i am sure you would have done the same, i was hoping with all the research going on including myself that MAYBE someone may have come accross information sorry if this has stricked you a bit sour my appologizes

Hola Lucio:

San Isidro, Apozol, Zacatecas

I recently found the primary family I'm researching in Jalisco had moved over to "San Isidro, Apozol, Zacatecas" by the 1930 census. When I Google this, I keep getting a place called "Los Llamas."

Ancestry.com has indexed Mexican civil records. Birth records are indexed to the mid-1940s, marriage records somewhat later, similarly for death records. This will vary by locality, but may help you to get more recent.

The best way to start is to go to the Ancestry.com catalog, and search for the state of interest. Births, marriages, and deaths are all separate files.

If you don't find anything, you should do a general birth-marriage-death search. This may lead you to a different state. The quality and completeness of the civil records varies by location.

Ancestry.com can be searched for free at many public libraries, as well as any Family History Center.

Comment

Thanks for the response. I have the international Ancestry membership and when I mentioned "hit a wall" it was because I had yielded nothing past 1930 on days of searching. This led me to want to know more about this rancho and what was happening during that era.

I'll keep digging. It'll turn up!

Diaz Family - Tepatitlan De Morelos, Jalisco, also Luna - Mayahua De Estrada, Zacatecas

Hello, I am new to the group and in the process of researching my father's family (Diaz) which is from Tepatitlan De Morelos, Jalisco. I have included what I know so far. I am still awaiting some records from the Family History Center. I will also be researching the Luna line in Mayahua De Estrada, Zacatecas as my father's mother was a Luna. I just wanted to post this message in case anyone just happens to have some information and/or I can be of any help in the future. Also, If I should post this information somewhere else, let me know. I also have this information entered into ancestry.com. Thank you for your time.

Dear Daniel Mendez del Camino,

I read where you stated that there were only three members of the nuestrosranchos group are descendants of the Diaz Castellanos family. You can add a fourth member as I just discovered that my wife descends from Maria Antonia Diaz Castellanos y Puga. Maria Antonia's father is Joseph Diaz Castellanos y Carrera. Joseph is the son of Juan de Dios Diaz de Castellanos, Juan de Dios is the son of Pedro Diaz Castellanos. Juan de Dios's marriage record is in 1710 so he and his father are born in the 1600's.

Even though a record is in Tepatitlan, it says that they are from Ayo el Chico.

I would welcome whatever information you can give me on the origins of the Diaz Castellanos.

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Hi Reye,

My family is also partly from Moyahua. When you search, also look at Juchipila, Amoxochitl and Contitlan, Zac. I have a lot of Luna's in my tree from that entire area that are connected. The towns are very close to each other.

Also, a tip, anything can happen in a family tree... So don't walk away from the possibility of your other family also having a branch in Zac. My family went back and forth between Zac, Jal and Aguascalientes throughout the generations.

Suerte and welcome!

Thank you for the tip Sandra. You are right, even though I have listed Moyahua as my grandmother's place of origin, she was actually from Pueblo Viejo del Municipio de Juchipilia. Also, I should note that I listed her maiden name as Juanita Magallanes Luna when her actual given name was Juana Magallanez Luna (1-6-1904). Juana's mother was named Albina Magallanez who was born abt. 1867. According to some original vital records that my family maintains on my granadmother (Juna Luna) her father was a C. FLorencio Luna who was 36 years (1865) old at the time of my grandmothers birth. My family who never knew him, as he did not migrate to the U.S with his wife, Albina Magallanez, believe his name was Florencio Luna.

Looking through Familysearch.org there is a a Albina Magallanes that was married to a Florentino Luna in 1881 and it also lists Abina Magallanes's parents as - Mother - Ma. Trinidad Benavides - Father - Guillermo Magallanez & Florentino Luna's parents to be Domingo Luna & Julia Avila. I will be commiting more time to this in the near future. I really appreciate your help and hope to be discussing my family, or our family, together in the future.

Also, a tip, anything can happen in a family tree... So don't walk away from the possibility of your other family also having a branch in Zac. My family went back and forth between Zac, Jal and Aguascalientes throughout the generations.

Suerte and welcome!

Hi there ,

My name is Welester G. Alvarado and I have a Maria Pascuala de Luna married to a Juan Pedro de Alvarado de la Cruz in the year 1790 in Saltillo , Coahuila . It is understood that many of the people from Jalisco , Zacatecas and Aguascaliente came to Coahuila as well as Nuevo Leon through the Ruta de Plata .

My question is this : Do you think that Pascuala could be related to any of your Lunas' ?

Thank you ,

Reye,

My name is Tony Diaz, wondering if our common surname may share an ancestor or two.  My grandfather, Gerardo Diaz, was born in Momax, Zacatecas, ca. 1898. His parents were from Rancho de Contreras. I understand that Momax (close to Tlaltenango) is near the Jalisco border. Would Tepatitlan be in the vicinity? Have you had your DNA results posted with the Genographic project? Curious to know if we may be related, in spite of the commonality of our shared last name.

Hey Tony, well I know my Granfather, Jose Maria Diaz was born around the same time as your grandfather, 1896 to be exact. However, my grandfather was born in Tepatitlan De Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico, not in the State of Zacatecas, were my grandmother, Juana Luna, was from. Also, as I have been briefly tracing my Diaz roots, it appears the Diaz familoy, for the most part, stayed in Tepatitlan, although my grandfather apparently deviated from that pattern. According to my long lost Cousin Daniel Mendez (look at the posts) he has advised me that the Diaz clan really never left Tepa. So, unless we can trace your grandfathers roots back to Tepatitlan, I'm not sure if he is going to link into my family line in Mexico. However, I will take a look at the information you gave me and also keep an eye out for any possible links.

I am also related to the same Aceves in Tepa. Were double cousins! I made a mistake your Manuel Dias should be a grandchild of my gggggf Pedro Diaz Castellano he only had one son and the rest were daughters. His name was Joseph Diaz Castellano. I would definetly order the marriage for your manuel! Your manuel should have been born ca. 1725 or so and a great grandson; my mistake. Manuel should be a son of Joseph. I will look into this.

This is so exciting. My long lost cousin Daniel Mendez! I was hoping my post would generate a response. Didn;t know it would come so quick. I will definetly order the marriage records for Manuel. Now when you you are related to the same Aceves, do you mean Teresa De Asebes that was married to Nicolas Diaz Castellano?

Comment

Hi Reye, Im not sure who she is but I know ALL aceves in Los Altos are related. They came from Spain, Their are only about 3 total people now in the group related to the Diaz Castellanos. You, I and I actually forgot the last person? This family never left Tepa. at least the main branch and only married into a couple families namly the Aceves, Alvarez, Velasco, and Quiros and Losa families. As a Spaniard I can say that my ancestors we rather racist! They usually married into other prominant Spanish families. And hardly at least in my case married the natives. I was nce told if the case ever happened they would make sure the next 3 generations would marry "white" to ensure a criollo. I dont like the fact that they saw them as inferior. According to my genealogy I have only one indian line. That is Moctezuma. One black or mulatto. All my other ancestors were European. I am very proud of my indian and black lines especially because I knew they are part of me and people who worke
d hard to maintain their families. As you keep going back, Im sure youll connect with the Esparza, Romo, Mendoza, Lomelini and other "important families" of Colonial Spain". For me I love genealogy it keeps me going in life even though I might be young
im filled with knowledge and desire.

Daniel Mendez,

My father's side of the family is Aceves. My grandfather: Emiliano Aceves Alva. Came to the border and change his last name to... only Alva.
But his father's was Leandro Aceves from San Juan de los Lagos, Jal. and his grandfather was Pedro Aceves. Do any of these name sound familiar to you?
Please advise,

Sam Alva

This is so exciting. My long lost cousin Daniel Mendez! I was hoping my post would generate a response. Didn;t know it would come so quick. I will definetly order the marriage records for Manuel. Now when you you are related to the same Aceves, do you mean Teresa De Asebes that was married to Nicolas Diaz Castellano?

Daniel Mendez wrote:

I would definetly order the marriage for your manuel! Your manuel should have been born ca. 1725 or so and a great grandson; my mistake. Manuel should be a son of Joseph. I will look into this.

Yea, I will have to order that marriage record for Manuel Diaz (Joseph Manuel Diaz), as I am not finding anything that links him to Joseph Dias and/or Pedro Diaz Castellano. I tried the dob of 1725 and cannot find any birth records for Manuel Dias or any of the other last names that could have been used by him. Also, in regards to Pedro Dias, I was able to find a Pedro Dias born in 1660 in De Atotonilco, Jalisco, who also married a Augustina Albares in 1680. However, I do not see this same Pedro Dias being born in Spain? He also has the son named Joseph Dias. Is this the same Pedro Dias Castellano you are referring to?

Well this is very interesting I am descended from the same family Pedro Diaz~Castellano from from Spain who arrived in Mexico in the
ca. 1680? They made their way to Tepatitlan or firstly to Guadalajara as the story goes. Well, Reye your line isnt that far from the original trunk of the tree since you say your abt 1730 presently i would guess you Jose Nicolas is a grandson of our ancestor? I know im also confused as i type this. -Daniel del Camino

Katy we had discussed who the parents of Teresa Carlos de Godoy in Jerez, Zac were and this dispensation for her daughter Gertrudis Fernandez to Francisco Acuna to marriage shows her father.

Katy.
I'm having trouble understanding the numbering of records such as
168185.. it has 1236 pages..I'm trying to figure out how to find for instance this record [2103 petronilo de la cruz & clara zaldivar / jerez] since the number is 2103.. can you explain the numbering for me? This film has 6 records that I'm trying to find page by page.
thank you

Hi,

Theresa Carlos de Godoy is my 8th great grandmother. I have been able to document who her father and paternal ancestros were, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out who her mother was. Some sites show her as the daughter of María Carrillo, but others show her as the Daughter of Catalina Cid Caldera and married to Pedro Joseph Contreras (instead of Alejandro Fernández).

Have you found a document or something that could help find out who her mother was? I haven't been able to find a marriage record for Theresa and Alejando nor a baptismal record for any of their children.

Comment

sorry for the late response, but the numbering in some posts is outdated since familysearch re numbered and split up some of their collection

Prima Linda,

Thanks for the link! Teresa Carlos de Godoy is my 6th GGM and that link provided me with several more generations of my direct ancestors. In addition, that link also help tie up other loose ends between my ancestors!

glad it helped you too. I was so busy trying to connect the Caldera lines I never expected it to be through Teresa Carlos de Godoy and Alejandro Fernandez. Teresa and Alejandro are my 6th great grandparents too also from his line. Looks like we are related AGAIN!!

Saludos.

Hello Daniel,

Katherine Brecht, who has indexed records from Sagrada Mitra, recently announced on the Nueva Galicia Genealogical Society's FB group page, that she will begin indexing the Morelia Informaciones matrimoniales y actas diversas. She might be looking for assistance. Look her up, I believe she's a member of this group.

Saludos!

Hi Manny,

Thanks for the reply. Alas, I'm not on Facebook. That said, if someone has her contact info(email address), please let me know. Alternatively, Katy if you see this, please shoot me an email at: themexican@outlook.com.

For the time being, I have already started indexing some of the Michoacan records. I'll submit a post for that separately.

Thanks,

Daniel Serna Valencia
