Hello all!

I'm trying to untangle the relationship between three individuals: Joaquín Gómez, Gertrudis Gómez, and Antonio Gómez. WikiTree currently presents them as siblings—the children of an Unknown Gómez. The proposed relationships appear to be based primarily upon two dispensas from 1798 and 1780.

Gertrudis Gómez appears in both dispensas.

The first dispensa, dated November 1798, concerns the marriage of José Mariano Ysas and María Francisca Gómez. It gives the following relationships:

Gertrudis Gómez, hermana de Antonio Gómez
José Ysas, primo hermano de Gregorio Gómez
Andrés Ysas, primo segundo de Vicente Gómez
Pretenso José Mariano Ysas, primo tercero de María Francisca Gómez

The Gertrudis Gómez mentioned here is identified as the Gertrudis Gómez who married Ignacio de Isassi sometime before the 8 May 1710 baptism of their first documented child, Juan Antonio de Isassi.

Her purported brother, Antonio Gómez, is identified as Antonio Gómez, son of Gaspar Gómez and Magdalena de Gutiérrez AKA de Ayala AKA del Vargas. Antonio was baptized on 25 August 1683 in Lagos. His padrino was Juan de Isassi—the apparent father of Ignacio de Isassi according to the 1676 Padron, Gertrudis Gómez's husband.

A separate 1709 dispensa confirms Antonio Gómez's marriage to his first cousin once removed, María Gómez. Their first documented son Gregorio Gomez (b. 23 Nov 1710), mentioned in the 1798 dispensa, was born the following year in 1710.

According to this same 1709 dispensa, María Gómez was the daughter of Joaquín Gómez—Antonio's first cousin—and Juana de Isassi, who was herself the daughter of Juan de Isassi. Thus, Juan de Isassi was both Antonio's baptismal sponsor and the grandfather of Antonio's wife.

The problem arises with the next dispensa, dated 1780, concerning the marriage of Juan Javier Isassi and María Guadalupe Gómez. It states that the couple was related in the third and fourth degrees of consanguinity and presents the following lineage:

  1. Gertrudis Gómez — hermanos — Joaquín Gómez
  2. Cristóbal Ysasi — primos hermanos — Marcial Gómez
  3. Juan Xavier Ysasi — primos segundos — Juana Phelipa Gómez
  4. María Guadalupe Gómez

This dispensa appears to identify Gertrudis Gómez and Joaquín Gómez as hermanos.

However, that creates an apparent impossibility if the relationships established by the other evidence are correct. If Gertrudis and Antonio were siblings, as stated in the 1798 dispensa, Joaquín cannot also have been Gertrudis's brother, because her established brother Antonio married María Gómez, the daughter of (his first cousin) Joaquín Gómez and his wife Juana de Isassi.

The Joaquín Gómez in the 1780 dispensa appears to be the same Joaquín mentioned in the earlier 1709 dispensa. Marcial Gómez was the son of Joaquín Gómez and Juana de Isassi. We are descended from both Gertrudis and Joaquín, and, as far as we can determine, both of those lines are otherwise very securely documented.

Likewise, The Gertrudis Gómez mentioned in the 1780 dispensa is the same person as the Gertrudis mentioned in the 1798 document. Her son, the Cristobal Ysas mentioned in the 1780 dispensa was baptized 28 May 1720, and referred to in that record as the son of Ignacio de Isassi and Gertrudis Gómez.

This leads to my question:

Would it be reasonable to conclude that the author of the 1780 dispensa made an error when identifying Gertrudis Gómez and Joaquín Gómez as hermanos, and that they should instead have been identified as primos hermanos?

That interpretation appears to be the only way I can reconcile all of the evidence presently available. It is also worth noting that the 1780 dispensa was prepared many decades—and likely more than a century—after the births of Gertrudis and Joaquín, meaning that the person preparing the relationship chart may have been relying upon older second-hand information or testimony that was itself imperfect.

-Under this interpretation, the current WikiTree reconstruction would also need to be revised. Rather than treating Gertrudis Gómez, Antonio Gómez, and Joaquín Gómez as the children of a single "Unknown Gómez," the evidence would instead suggest two separate Gómez siblings:

1. Gaspar Gómez, father of:

  • Gertrudis Gómez
  • Antonio Gómez

2. Juana Gómez, sister of Gaspar Gómez and mother of:

  • Joaquín Gómez

Under this reconstruction, Gertrudis and Antonio would indeed be siblings, as stated in the 1798 dispensa, while Joaquín would be their first cousin rather than their brother.

This would also explain Antonio Gómez's marriage to María Gómez, the daughter of Joaquín Gómez and Juana de Isassi. María would have been Antonio's first cousin once removed, precisely as indicated in the 1709 dispensa.

If this reconstruction is correct, then the 1780 dispensa appears to contain the problematic statement. Gertrudis Gómez and Joaquín Gómez should presumably have been identified as primos hermanos, rather than hermanos.

That interpretation would reconcile all of the known dispensas and the documented family relationships. It would also require the current WikiTree profile for the "Unknown Gómez" parent to be separated into two individuals: Gaspar Gómez, father of Gertrudis and Antonio, and his sister Juana Gómez, mother of Joaquín Gómez.

Of course, I don't want to dismiss a contemporary or near-contemporary genealogical statement simply because it conflicts with my current reconstruction. Before assuming that the word hermanos was an error, I would greatly appreciate hearing how others would evaluate these dispensas and the conflicting relationships they present.

Would you consider this sufficient reason to treat the relationship in the 1780 dispensa as a likely scribal or genealogical error, or are there other possible explanations that I may be overlooking?

(I tried to link all sources within the text, let me know if I missed anything.)

Thank you!
