Mexican Revolution

My great-uncle, Jose Jesus Delgadillo from Teocaltiche, Jalisco, was in the medical corps in the Mexican Revolution and served under Pancho Villa, as I have heard.

Busco específicamente a José maría Elisalde casado con Lorenza Elisalde, ellos tienen un hijo llamado José María. Se que recidían en Guadalajara en 1810 porque bautizaron a su nieta en el Sagrario Metropolitano en esa fecha. Saludos!

Hi Nora,
I am also working on my DeAnda family tree. My DeAnda family in the mid to late 1600's are from Teocaltiche, Jalisco, the 1700's from Aguascalientes, the late 1700's thru 1800's from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco and Aguascalientes. I am also researching the Romo surname from Aguascalientes and Jalisco My GGGG grandfather was Joaquin Romo De Vivar born abt 1754 in (Salsipuedes) Lagos de Moreno Jalisco he was married to Maria Josefa Camarena. If you think your ancestors are from these areas I can give you more info. If anyone has info on Joaquin Romo's parents I would appreciate any help.

Hello Aurora,

I just found a marriage of a Don Joseph Joaquin Romo de Vivar orignario y
vecino de Salsipuedes in 1774 which is two years before the first child of
your Joaquin but the wife is Maria Josepha Hernandes Pulida. She could still
be your ancsestor and had used Camarena for the baptisms of her children. It
starts at the bottom right in the following page

Thank you Armando.
I had found that marriage of Joaquin Romo with Maria Josefa Hernandes. Everything makes sense the dates, Salsipuedes location everything but Maria Josefa,s last name. I have looked to see if I could find the Camarena last name in the family. I cannot seem to make a connection to that name of Camarena.
Now that FamilySearch is working a bit better I will try again to go thru the Matrimonial Informaciones of 1774 perhaps I can find something. I just found 2 children listed under Joaquin and Ma Josefa Hernandes. I'll check their baptismal records and see what I find.

Muchas gracias

Emilie,

There is "Ahualulco" in San Luis Potosí and an "Ahualulco de Mercado" in Jalisco. Never heard of one in Zacatecas Incidentally, this is the first time I hear the name Pilar given to a male, as Pilar is usually a name given to a female.

Bill and Emily,

I have seen the name Pilar for both male and female.

Yes, I just remembered that one of my great-grandmothers had a brother named Pilar. I guess back before 1900 Pilar was used interchangeably for both boys and girls.

I have an uncle named pilar. I believe that it is used equally to name males and females in my families hometown in Jalisco.

Bill,

Thank you for your response. I will try different spellings and see what I can find.

Yes, I had a very hard time finding out what his real name was. His daughter's death record listed him as "Velar" and I finally found the family in the US census records with him as Pilar and in 1920 he was listed as "Pete". He immigrated from Mexico in 1900 and settled in Louisiana where his children grew up speaking French instead of English or Spanish. Go figure.

Emilie,

I found it interesting that Pilar's (or Pete's) children grew up speaking
French in Louisiana. That is not unusual considering that Luisiana was
under French and Spanish rule before the independence of the U.S. However,
nearly all French speaking creoles living in the southwestern parishes of
Louisiana are descendants of French Canadians that resisted the British
occupation of Acadia early in the 18th century, and who were later expulsed
by the British beginning in 1755. After their homes were burned and their
land confiscated, many Acadians sailed South and settled in the bayous of
Louisiana. The descendants of those who settled in Louisiana after 1764 are
better known as Cajuns. They speak French and keep their culture and
traditions alive.

Bill,

I googled "Ahualulco, Zacatecas", and this link came up:
http://www.nuestro-mexico.com/Zacatecas/Juchipila/Areas-de-menos-de-10-…

It is in the municipio of Juchipila! Currently only 10 people live there.

My cousin who I am helping with his research told me that his maternal grandmother was born in Louisiana and spoke only French. After researching, she was really born in Tampico, Tamaulipas, and was brought to Louisiana as a very small child by her father Pilar Lopez. I wondered why she didn't speak English or Spanish. I was unaware of any migration from Mexico to LA in the late 1800s and early 1900s, at least not like I have seen to Texas and the rest of the Southwest.

Yes, I knew about Cajuns in Louisiana though not where they came from. In fact, my brother-in-law (African-American) had a relative from Louisiana, and when he spoke English I couldn't understand a word he said, his southern accent was so thick. He told me and my sister that we looked like Cajuns. We look typically "Mexican" or Native American. We are descended from Pueblo Indians and Spanish settlers from the 1500s in New Mexico.

I also recall a man at work that we hired to translate from Spanish to English for the Mexican patients. He was a cajun from Lousiana by the surname LaSalle. He used to sing a song about "Thiboudoux" or something like that, and he would laugh and laugh. He loved speaking Spanish, and our patients thought he was one of them. He had no one to speak French to.

So it seems that Cajuns for some reason not only look like us, but they speak both Spanish and French as their first languages. Mr. LaSalle said that his people were often referred to by a vulgar name referring to the back end of a racoon. He said it was because back in the 1800s and later they wore caps made from coon skins, like Davy Crockett, with the tail of the raccoon hanging down the back. He said that they were a mixed-race people---Indian and French, kind of like the Mexicans---Spanish and Indian. He said many cajuns also had black blood, but that they wouldn't admit it. I found many people with French first names and the surname Lopez in the early censuses of various parishes in southern LA.

I figure the Mexicans who migrated to Lousiana instead of to Texas or New Mexico felt more comfortable with the French-speaking Cajuns and lived among them, and the children spoke whatever language the other children in the community spoke. Pilar worked in a saw mill in Calcasieu Parish and Beauregard Parish. I guess he ended up speaking Cajun French too.

We had an employee who was French speaking, and she couldn't communicate too well with the patients from Montreal, and I think that would be the case with the Louisiana Cajuns too. Different dialects.

It is all very interesting. I hope I can find more about Pilar in Zacatecas for my cousin who knows nothing about that side of his family. All he could tell me was the name of his grandmother and that he thought she had been born in Louisiana.

Ya tengo los padres de José María Elizalde: Fueron José María Elizalde y Lorenza Elizalde (Aunque no se si ese era su apellido o llevaba el del esposo) En actas aparecen como españoles. Hasta 1810 radicaban en Guadalajara.

George, this site is wonderful. I was able to extend a "dead-end" line 3 more generations. For me it worked easiest to just use the "Tipo" button and scroll down to "Testamentos." Sorry to sound too greedy; but my question now is whether there is a way to use the Archivo Historical de Jalisco? Thank you, Deedra Corona

Thank you the complement; but it really goes to others at NR who originally posted the information about this site.

I'm not familiar with the Jalisco archive ... perhaps someone else at NR is familiar with it?

I thikn you discovered something very interesting! Josepha and Ana Macias Saldaña are both my ancestors!; the first married to Jacinto Sandoval Gutiérrez, and the second to Francisco Martel Macias Valadez.
What I'm not so sure is if the Gaspar Macías Valadez is the son of Nicolas and Leonor.
Juan Macías Valadez died July 3, 1681 in Aguascalientes.

George and Luis,
No need to thank me. Over the last years I've received so much from NR members, that reciprocating is a pleasure. George, regarding how long it takes to transcribe these documents, it depends on several factors. 1) Quality of image\condition of the document, 2) How legible is the handwriting of an specific author, 3) Whether abbreviations or odd terms\names are used (there are some very interesting terms for disease or farm and home utencils), 4) length of the document, and 4) Transcribing method. 5) Experience. This one of Juan Macias Valades took me a very long time (about six hours) because of issues with poor permanship and certain abbreviations that were difficult to decipher, the usage of certain terms, including some latin, and the length of the document, and it was my second attempt to transcribe a testament. However, one thing that accelerates the pace of transcription, is to focus on batches from a particular notary. You do not only learn how to read the permanship
of the oficial (at least in Aguascalientes, very few people new how to write), but also officers of the court will tend to repeat the body of the testament among different testaments. So once you transcribe one, you'll find large portions of the text repeated in the next testament. If you notice in the Archivos of Aguascalientes, the name of the notary is identified which simplifies this selection. Finally, the method of transcription is critical. I've tried modifying PDF files to include lines above the intended text to be transcribed. But, I have not find a way of simplify the insertion of lines according to differences in the size of letters both within a particular document or among documents. Instead, I've opted for a digital recorder where I can record at normal speed, and reproduce at a slower speed that matches my typing abilities. In ideal terms, I would love to find a technology where the original image could be overlaid with the transcription. That way each word t
ranscribed can be verifyied by other users such that errors could be easily called. Any suggestions? So to answer your question, it takes me between 1-3 hours for testaments 5-7 pages long.

Hello Nancy,

In the civil records that I have looked at in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco state
that they are transcriptions of the original records and I deduced that they
also wrote the numbers of the original records in case they needed to be
referred to.
