Help with Y-DNA - Standard Y-STR Values from DNA experts at Nuestros Ranchos

Question
I just received the Family tree Y DNA results from my Uncle's DNA test. Of the 58 values on his Y-DNA - Standard Y-STR he matches 51 exactly with another person the other 7 are:

I am not an expert, but I have some experience with these tests. I think 7/58 differences is a lot, but there may have been 3 mutations on one branch and 4 on the other over those nine generations.
I don't think the results confirm the connection, but given the records, I would say the results suggest the connection.

Check out Gary Felix's Mexican DNA page:
http://garyfelix.tripod.com/index63.htm
It may take a while to open, but at the very end you can see the section of Y-DNA founders, with examples of families with a common ancestor probaly 8-12 generations away. Some of the branches have at most 3-4 differences, not 7.

I think in order to confirm the connection, you need to compare with more samples from other branches of the family and see if you both separately are a better match to the new samples. Also, how come you tested for 58 markers? I thought FTDNA went from 37 to 67. Did the other family just tested for 58?

In my family one of our samples has 3 differences with another one, and our common ancestor is just 3-4 generations away. However, when comparing with a third sample from another branch, each of us has only one or two differences with the third sample (67 markers compared in one case).

I'm sure Armando and other members will have more to say regarding your sample.
Regards,
Victoriano Navarro

Thanks Victoriano, I will check out that website. The results came this morning and I'm still trying to figure them out. The test is a Y67 and when I compare it to other Y67 tests they all only have 58 values in the Y-DNA STR markers, which is just another indication that I have a lot to learn about how to read these DNA tests.

What company did you order your DNA test from? What were the costs? Both my parents did a DNA test through Ancestry.com, but it only shows where they came from. I don't believe they received the actual codes/raw data.

Thanks.

Marty,

The only company you can order a Y-DNA STR test from is from FamilyTreeDNA. It is cheaper if you get it through a DNA project such as https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=NuevaGaliciaDNA

Ancestry.com doesn't even do Y-DNA SNP testing. 23andme does limited SNP testing so at least the right haplogroup is determined with them but they don't do STR testing either.

Comentario

rmcneal103, you actually have 67 markers but some of them are grouped under one STR name such as DYS464 and YCAII.

If you go to https://www.familytreedna.com/my/y-dna-matches.aspx it will tell you if you match anyone at 67 markers and if so how many markers are different under the Genetic Difference column. Generally speaking, if you match others with the same surname you can ask them to share a tree if they don't have one posted to determine if there is a high likelihood of a common ancestor in the past 15 generations. If you match people with a different surname there could have been an NPE (non-paternal event) meaning an ancestor in the direct paternal line is unknown in either or both trees or there was a convergence of STR markers making you look like there is a common ancestor in the past 15 generations. STR markers change randomly but normally it takes several generations for a single STR marker change. I have see both extremes where there were multiple STR changes in a single generation and also where there have been at least 10 generations without any or only one STR change. It is extremely rare for SNPs markers to change which is also why the BigY test was released but it is expensive and if you are trying to find out if you share most of the same SNPs as another person there has to be a lot of people in the last 2,000 years that are closely related to have had the test as well as the specific person you are trying to determine how close the match is.
If you're 67 marker matches have had SNP testing you can order SNP tests for a lower price at www.yseq.net to see if you are positive for the same SNP and sometimes they have SNP panels that make testing a large number of SNPs which makes it even more economical to find your terminal SNP.

If your uncle has another person with a family tree that goes back to the same ancestor in your uncle's paternal line in his list of 67 marker matches they do share that common ancestor.

Comentario

rmcneal103, the reason that the 67 marker match doesn't show up at 25 and 37 markers is because not enough STR markers match at those levels. 12 marker matches that have had a 67 marker test but don't match at 67 markers are extremely unlikely to be from a common ancestor in the past 15 generations even if they have the same surname.

At 12 markers they show matches up to a difference of 1 marker.
At 25 markers they show matches up to a difference of 2 markers.
At 37 markers they show matches up to a difference of 4 markers.
At 67 markers they show matches up to a difference of 7 markers.
At 111 markers they show matches up to a difference of 10 markers.

If your uncle's 67 marker matches have had a 111 marker test you can get one for your uncle too to see if they still match at 111 markers. If they do then there is a higher likelihood of a recent common ancestor. If they haven't had a 111 marker test you can ask them to get one if you are willing to get one for your uncle.

You may then “add” more detail with matching to possible cousins for an additional fee with FAMILY FINDER. With ANCESTRY I have had a number of cousin matches to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins as the primary results. FAMILY TREE also has Surname Projects you can join and I belong to NEW MEXICO DNA PROJECT, and within that ESPINOSA PROJECT. Your mtDNAwill give you your lineage back thru your mother, grandmother, her mother, her mother’s mother, etc. Mine went back to ancient Pueblo and is likely ANASAZI based on testing done on some available bones from archaeological digs years ago. My Espinosa line thru my male cousin traces back to Nicolas de Espinosa from Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico. My mother Spanish heritage from the conquistadors of New Mexico has a lot of Native American blood mixed in. I do have a great grandmother generations back onmy father’s side which goes back many hundreds of years to Russia. This showed on the maps provided by FTDNA in my results as well as being able to paper trace back. My ethnicity was broken down and shown on the maps. Hope this helps and you find what you’re looking for. Both sites have excellent explanatory DNA information.

Puesta

What exactly is a Puesta? Is it just a non-specific place or is it more specific than that? Is it like a small village? Is it considered temporary or permanent?

Comentarios

Comentario

Se dice y se escribe "puesto". Es más pequeño que una Labor, un Rancho o una Hacienda. Ciertamente mucho menos grande que un Pueblo, una Villa o una Ciudad.

Comentario

In the records I've seen is the old word for "Pueblo"(town), usually spelled "Puesto" but also seen as Puesta. Even if intended to describe a specific volume of settlers I've always see it to name anything from small congregation to well developed villages. My thinking is just a generic way of naming a place when there was no known (a least to the scribe) or established descriptor. e.g. "Puesto de los Aguacates" instead of "Lavor de los Aguacates".

For a Y-DNA test the minimum number of STR markers you should get tested are Y-DNA37 and if you can get a Y-DNA67 marker test that's even better since sometimes people separated by 10 generations won't match at 37 markers but they will at 67 markers.

The tests are cheaper if you order through a DNA project such as the Nueva Galicia DNA project. https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=NuevaGaliciaDNA

Comentario

I agree with Armando, for Y-DNA I would recommend testing 67 or 37 markers (preferably 67). Older tests of 12 or 25 may give too many matches that don't end up being close ones with the 67 test, and the 111 marker test may be more than needed, especially if you don't have too many 67-level matches.

Comentario

yeah test with either ancestry or my23andme(never tried 23andme but i heard good things about). i don't like ftdna. i transfered my mom's ancestrydna results to that website the the native and east asian percentages were weird and didn't match gedmatch or ancestry's percentage of those two.

so i;m not gonna bother transfering my aunt and grandpa's dna to that site.

Comentario

I too used FTDNA for my mother's mtDNA (haplogroup C, Native American, Pre-Columbian). She is New Mexican Pueblo Indian (Piro-Manso-Tewa) with some Spanish ancestors. I only had the funds for the basic 12, but they have linked me up with other descendants in New Mexico. My husband, whose ancestors were from Jalisco turned out Haplogroup T1 Mesopotamian. FTDNA has found only one descendant in Texas who has not responded to my e-mails.

The main reason I say 23andme is better is because I have seen the results of people and my own family members that have used multiple companies such as 23andme, FamilyTreeDNA, Ancestry, and National Geographic Geno 2.0 and I have also seen the results when uploaded to www.gedmatch.com FamilyTreeDNA always under reports the Native American compared to the other companies. In order for you to see the difference of a 100% Native American in Gedmatch and FamilyTreeDNA compare the two following two pages of the Clovis Anzick child and click on the images.

http://www.fi.id.au/2014/11/clovis-anzick-ethnic-makeup-in-ftdna.html

http://www.fi.id.au/2014/10/new-clovis-anzick-1-kit-in-gedmatch.html

You will clearly see that too much of his Native American ancestry is assigned to Northeast Asian and Siberia. So that makes him look like 68% Native American instead of the 91.68% that he is assigned at Gedmatch. This happens with almost all Latin Americans. Almost all of us have at least a small amount of Native American DNA but it gets reported at a lower rate at FamilyTreeDNA.

Anybody that can get tested with 23andme, Ancestry, and FamilyTreeDNA should do that so they can see that FamilyTreeDNA is under reporting our Native American DNA.

Everyone should also upload to Gedmatch and use the Admixture (heritage) calculators to see that the Native American shows up at a higher amount there also.

The only way to know which company gives better results is for people to test with multiple companies and then compare the results for that single person. Then to repeat that with someone else and then another person. A pattern emerges in this process and that is the pattern I have seen.

I did my with 23 and me for 100 USD. They give you more information and
they use the new v4 chip. You can trasfer the information to
familytredna.com and you can enter the surname projects.

I have found 4 people that share the same territory and surnames as my
family tree.

23andme v2 and v4 files cannot be transferred to FamilyTreeDNA. Only the 23andme v3 file can be transferred. The Ancestry.com autosomal DNA file can be transferred.

https://www.familytreedna.com/AutosomalTransfer

We only accept the 23andMe V3 chip that was used on tests sold between November 2010 and approximately November 2013. There are a couple of ways to find out what chip was used for your test other than simply the timeframe. One is size; v3 chip files are about 7.83 MB where V2 and V4 chips are smaller. If you’re tech savvy, you can unzip the file and check chromosomes: Chromosome 1 for v3 starts at 82154 (rs4477212) where v4 starts at 734462 (rs12564807)and v2 starts with position 742429 (rs3094315).
http://dna-explained.com/2014/10/19/family-tree-dna-announces-free-auto…

I agree that 23andme gives more information and more detailed information than FamilyTreeDNA. When possible getting the autosomal tests at all three companies is the best.

Comentario

I have used and recommend Geno2.0 by National Geographic and FamilyFinder by FamilytreeDNA. The first one gives you mtDNA, Y-DNA (for males) and Neanderthal estimate on the same test, the second one lets you compare your sample with other people.

VN

I also used 23 and Me and was very satisfied but I would recommend if you have a brother to have him take the test too since you can only have the MTDNA test and that's mother to daughter only. I had my brother and my mothers brother both do the test so I got my MTDNA group A, native american,
my Dads surname Castanon haplogroup RIBI and my mother's paternal line surname Gutierrez haplogroup N.
good luck in your search.

Which "Indio Tribe" are people from Mezquitic or Zacatecas area during Colonial times?

I have a question to ask? When I have been researching our ancestors in the LDS archives for the Mezquitic area of Jalisco, Mexico. And ran across people stated as "indio" which indio tribe?

Comentarios

Comentario

I am fairly certain that the indigenous ethnic group in the area of Mezquitic at the time of the conquest were Tepehuanes (Tepecanos). The Wixarrika (Huicholes) came as refugees during the Chichimeca wars and took over some of the remote villages of the Tepehuanes and absorbed some of their culture. Most of the Tepehuan communities in Northern Jalisco were assimilated into the Mestizo population soon after independence and the end of the separate legal treatment of their communities and lands. There are some communities that still survive further north in Durango.

I wonder if the location or village name provided in the left margin of baptisms might be a clue to use with historical documents or linguistic research. This was done in the missionized areas of California after mission baptisms, marriages and burials were entered into a database. A researcher (Randall Milliken) was able to map the indigenous rancherias and associate them with language families and cultural affinity, even the many tribes that had vanished. Mexico is earlier, bigger and a lot different but it wouldn't surprise me if some historians might be working on it.

Comentario

well you can't from the records in most cases since the records rarely specify, and during/after the conquest many family and tribal units were torn apart/split up.

Hello Joseph,

Thank you so much for the image of Ana's Death. I noticed that she made a will with "Joseph Carrillo". (The same thing did Joseph de Barragan on the same page). Please let me know if you find those wills. I already searched for them in Archivo de la Real Audiencia (Biblioteca Publica del Estado de Jalisco- online database for "Bienes Difuntos") without any luck.

Thank you so much again. I will keep you posted if I find anything

Hi Joseph,

I saw the record. I think in the record her surname is Ana Rodrigues Hortis de San Pedro. The "Rodrigues" is new information. I'm very interested in Ana, I just received my Mitochondrial DNA (that happens to be Ana's), I'm a female- female.... descendant of Ana, to my surprise I'm haplogroup B4'5 (native). Then I think Ana's mother or grand-mother or great-grandmother will be "Indian". I can't wait to find her.

Thank you again for all your help

I have been able to construct a tree to five generations and yes he does have surnames that are common to los altos de Jalisco but have not yet been able to connect them to any of my branches. I have connected them to San Juan de Los Lagos and Atotonilco de los altos. I will keep searching and will post when I find a confirmed connection.

Capellania question

I'm hoping someone can help me find the testament and capellania for Marcos Gonzalez from Jalpa who died in 1670.

Comentario

I found a partial transcription of the testament of Marcos Gonzalez Hidalgo, here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gonz%C3%A1lez_Hidalgo-20

More specifically Marcos' parents are Marcos Gonzalez Hidalgo del Valle and Mariana (Juana) NAVARRO RODRIGUEZ, who settled in Monterrey. See the links below:
http://www.sologenealogia.com/gen/getperson.php?personID=I456&tree=009
and
http://www.currays.net/Gonzalez%20Web%20Project/wp03/wp03_466.htm

Is anyone a direct male ancestor of this Gonzalez line, as I'm interested in seeing if my paternal DNA is a match.

First you need to ask the NR moderator to create your Tree on GEDCOM.

Second you need to convert your data to GED 5.5 and upload to your new GEDCOM Tree on Nuestros Ranchos using the "ADMINSTRATION" button on the GEDCOM site.

Good luck!

I believe Estefana did have different parents. (I'm going over old notes a distant cousin wrote for me.) this cousin had Estefana listed as having Tadeo Dias & Genoveva as the parents.

Sebastian de Avila & Lugarda Dias de Leon / Nicolas de Avila & Gertrudis Falcon de la Garza of Pinos, Zacatecas

Hello Rosalinda,

Can you share that dispensa? I would like to see it, thank you. ;)

I have Nicolas de Avila, son of Juan Lopez de Avila and Juana Trujillo, married to Magdalena de Contreras, though their children were born between 1707 and 1720, so Gertudis could be a 2nd marriage (unless I'm wrong about Magdalena Contreras... need to review my notes).

Maria Gertrudis Falcon de la Garza was the daughter of Joseph de la Garza and Catalina Gomez-Avila; she was baptized 23 Nov 1713, Pinos:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15233-31246-40?cc=1804458&wc…

Joseph de la Garza was son of Phelipe de la Garza and Phelipa Santiago, and Catalina Gomez, the daughter of Blas Gomez de las Ruelas and Maria de Avila. They were married 10 Feb 1706, Pinos:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15246-29107-90?cc=1804458&wc…

I have Blas Gomez and Maria de Avila in my lines, they were from Zacatecas, Zacatecas, and moved to Salitre, in Pinos, around 1700. Blas was son of Juan Gomez de las Ruelas (aka Juan Gomez Nieto) and Maria Teresa Martin aka Maria Teresa Guerrero, and they lived in San Felipe & Guanajuato, Guanajuato. Many of their children settled in the Pinos area around 1690. Their descendants also use the compound surname, Gomez de Sotomayor.

You say Lugarda Diaz de Leon also uses "Becerra"; she might be daughter of Juan Esteban Diaz de Leon and Nicolasa Becerra, who lived in the Pinos/Ojuelos area.

If you can't find records in Sr San Jose, Ojuelos, check San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas, and Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos, Jalisco.

Hi Manny,

This is the dispensation in question:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18433-6041-14?cc=1874591&wc=…

On this page, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18433-6324-26?cc=1874591&wc=…

it shows a family tree, with the pretenso, Francisco de Avila (son of Sebastian de Avila & Lugarda Dias) marrying Maria Regina de Avila (daughter of Ygnacio de Avila & Maria Francisca Araiza). As you can see in the tree, the tronco is Ticio (I was trying to figure out this name) Davila & Maria Zapata. Since I couldn't figure out the man's name, I decided to trace Ygnacio's line up, which led me to his father, Doroteo, and in turn Doroteo's father, Bernardo de Avila. Bernardo, as you know, is son of Juan Lopez de Avila & his second wife, Juana de Trujillo. Juan & Juana had a son, Nicolas, and in the dispensation tree, this Nicolas is the son of the tronco couple. The timing of Nicolas' baptism (as son of Juan & Juana Trujillo) is appropriate, and the dispensation identifies Nicolas and Bernardo as brothers.

Tracing the line up from Francisco, his father, Sebastian Antonio, is the son of Nicolas and Gertrudis Falcon de la Garza. I believe the tronco couple's name of Ticio (?) and Maria Zapata (who was the first wife of Juan Lopez de Avila) is incorrect. I'm trying to double check my hypothesis that Ticio Davila and Maria Zapata are really Juan Lopez de Avila and Juana Trujillo, since Nicolas and Bernardo are noted as brothers in the dispensa. By the way, there is a "baptism" record for Sebastian Antonio de Avila with an 1802 date, but the record states that Sebastian had been baptized (but not in 1802-- the note is merely added in 1802). This note is located in the 1736-1755 bautismos de castas.

Thank you so much for your information, and I will look into the Diaz de Leon connection.

Have you heard of Pedro Ygnacio de Avila & Josefa de Soto? Are you familiar where the testamentos for Pinos would be located? This involves one of my brick wall families, so this dispensa could help me break through that.

Rosalinda

Comentario

Hi Rosalina,

This is brilliant - I descend from Bernardo, and I’ve tracked these lines thoroughly, so I’m sure I can help you crack this.

Let me look this over, and I’ll see what I have. In the meantime, upon looking at my notes, Nicolas de Avila-Trujillo could NOT have been married to Magdalena Contreras, since he was born in 1696, and Nicolas de Avila and Magdalena Contreras were already having children the first decade of the 1700s.

You’re on track!

Manny Diez Hermosillo

Comentario

Hi Rosalinda,

You’re right, Juan Lopez de Avila and Juana de Trujillo are the correct tronco for this tree, which reminds us how foggy the descendants' & testigos’ memories can be. I have the Bernardo side down to Joseph Ygnacio Raphael de Avila (though not his wife), and it corresponds to the tree in the dispensa. Nicolas and Bernardo are brothers, though, as you mention, it’d be nice to seal it with marriage or burial records for Nicolas de Avila and Gertrudis de la Garza, as well as others.

The earliest baptism I have for one of their children is for Joseph Bonificio, who was baptized 27 Jan 1727, Pinos. He was born on Salitre, where her family lived (between there and San Nicolas, where she was born), and where they were likely married. Unless we have an earlier birth, we’re looking at them marrying before early 1726, and in Pinos. I have some time this evening, I’ll dig through the Pinos archives.

Regarding “Ticio,” on no other record have I seen Juan de Avila referred to as “Ticio,” so it might have been a nickname, or something like “fulano,” or “what's-his-name.” And both Nicolas and Bernardo were born long after Phelipa Zapata died, while giving birth to her first child. Juana de Trujillo was their mother, as their baptism records establish.

I'll start looking through my Diaz de Leon's and Becerra's, as well, to see who's daughter this Lugarda was - it was a very popular name.

Great find! It’s hard to sift through cloudy memories and hurried notaries!

apparently Estefana had different parents. I show Tadeo Diaz and Josefa Torres.

The Tadeo Diaz you refer to is apparently not this one. That Tadeo was married to Genoveva Leanos between 1819 and 1848 and had many children, one of whom is Florentino.

Estefana was born in January 1830. Unless she was an illegitimate child, you have the wrong father.
