Someone asked a while back why the last name "Salado" was taken by some of their children, Cristobal, Lucas and Nicolas. I think I stumbled on the answer, if you go up 4 generations it looks like this.
Bernardo Ruiz de Esparza, his mother, Ana Francisca de Gabay, her mother, Petrolina Moctezuma (still being debated), her father, Diego de Arias de Sotelo, and last his father, Capitan Antonio Sotelo y Salgado.
I am not 100% sure on this, but I too wondered where the last name "Salado" came from, and Salgado sounds very close.
I found a link to a book that mentions the Sotelo y Salgado family.

Here in nuestrosranchos there has been some duscussion about the origin of the use of the lastname Salado among the Ruíz de Esparza family and so far I can tell you that no relationship can be established between the Salgados you mention whose "linaje" is shown in the book that you mention : "Nobiliario, Armas y Triunfos de Galicia....", and the "Salados" that appear in Nueva Galicia related to the Ruíz de Esparza and the Fernández de Vaulus y Siordia families.
What seems to be unquestioned is that the first documented "Salado" in Nueva Galicia is Juanes de Salado who married around 1585 Petrona Gutiérrez and these couple were the parents of Bernardo Salado born around 1585, Jerónima de Salado born around 1587 and Diego Salado baptized on may 2, 1593 in Mexico City.
Bernardo Salado married around 1605 Juana Fernández de Vaulus y Siordia Navarro de Gabay, daughter of Pedro Fernández de Vaulus and María Navarro de Gabay.
This Juana Fernández de Vaulus y Navarro was cousin of the children of Lope Ruíz de Esparza, misteriously some of the children of Lope Ruíz de Esparza are also called "Salados" as is the case of María Salado Ruíz de Esparza born around 1613 who married Nicolás de Ulloa around 1635; Bernardo Ruíz de Esparza Salado who married Catalina Lozano on feb-28th-1634.
The descendants of Juana Fernández de Vaulus and Bernardo Salado could use righteously the lastname Salado, but why would the children of Lope ?
Some time ago I read a book written by Victoriano Salado Álvarez and he says that he is a descendant of Juanes de Salado but he canot mention the whole link between he and that Juanes, nevertheless he mentions on "proceso de Inquisición" that was held against this family of Salados , the process was iniciated in 1675 by one servant of Bernarda Salado de Siordia who was a widow with five living children :Juana, Constanza, Bernardo, María y Catlina.
Juana and Constanza were already married by that time and Bernardo who was around 40 years old was not married.
The servant that accused these Salados was a mulata who declared tha se witnessed some rituals performed by the family that were against the Catholic religion.
I remember that a special prosecutor was comissioned to invetigate the matter and he found that this family was well respected in the area and that Doña Bernarda Salado de Siordia was reputed as part of the renowned family of the "Esparzas"; that her daughter Juana was married to the encomendero Hernán Flores de la Torre, and Constanza married to a wealthy "arriero" called Francisco Ponce; the case was finally DISMISSED.
The mystery about the lastname Salado remains till we find some more data.

I forgot telling you that the name of the father of Diego Arias de Sotelo has been already mentioned here in nuestrosranchos several times and was not Antonio Sotelo Salgado but Antonio de Sotelo y Cisneros son of Pedro de Sotelo and Beatríz de Cisneros.
Pedro de Sotelo was the son of Lope de Sotelo who died in 1447 and founded in his will a chapel in the church of San Andrés in Zamora.
The Salados Mystery
Carlos, thank you for setting the record straight. I could not find the posts you were talking about. Also, I did not want to follow the wrong lineage family. This is why I mentioned I was not 100% sure so I could get feedback on the right information. Thanks again for clearing this up. Now I can correct my family tree.
