Ronnie,

If you look at the children of José Muñoz de Nava on the site of Javier
Sanchiz Ruiz you will notice a source of info which is Luz Montejano
Hilton, Expedientes de la Serie de Matrimonios, Sagrada Mitra de
Guadalajara which might mean there is another dispensa that has conflicting
information. This would not be the first time for this to happen. I have
seen dispensas with errors at least six different times. Twice with Macías
Valadez family members, once with Moreno de Ortega, once with Villalobos,
once with Santoyo, and another one mentioned here on Nuestros Ranchos. You
should attempt to find the dispensas for the following people.

http://gw5.geneanet.org/sanchiz?lang=es;p=juan+francisco;n=munoz+de+nav…

Can you give me more info about where at familysearch.org you found Jose
Munoz de Nava,listed as son Francisco Munoz de Nava and leonor Ramirez de
Hermosillo, married to Micaela Gomez de Mendoza?

Hola Ronnie,

I suspected it was at the old site but I couldn't find it. I've found it
now. It is most likely based off a family group sheet submitted by Jaime
Holcombe Isunza found in film number 1396255. You should order the film and
copy the family group sheets in it that he has submitted because he would
note his sources at the bottom of the page. You can order it at the
following page -

https://www.familysearch.org/films/lookup/products/view/film/1396255/

In case someone else wants to see the old family search page for this
couple it is at -

Hola Ronnie,

The dispensa you just mentioned states that Leonor Ramírez de Hermosillo
was the cousin of Agustín Garcia de Hermsillo. It also states that Leonor
Ramírez de Hermosillo was the grandmother of the groom. If this information
is correct then the information that is on Javier Sanchiz Ruiz's site is
incorrect. It would be best to find more records to corroborate this info.
One way would be to find the dispensa of the original couple in question -
Jose Munoz de Nava married to Micaela Gomez de Mendoza on Feb 10, 1716
Tepatitlán by looking through Guadalajara Matrimonios 1716-1718 film 167985
which seems to be the only volume that hasn't been indexed that would have
the dispensa for that particular marriage.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-13935-86?

Once the rest of the dispensas have been indexed we might find the
dispensas that Javier Sanchiz Ruiz used for his site.

Have you looked through all of the ones that have been indexed that mention
the Muñoz de Nava, García de Hermosillo, or Ramírez de Hermosillo surnames.

Ronnie,

It didn't take as long as I thought it would to find the record. It shows how helpful it can be to keep track of which films containing dispensas have which dates and which ones haven't been indexed.

It's at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-14963-82?

Joseph Muñoz de Nava was definitely the son of Francisco Muñoz de Nava and Leonor Ramírez de Hermosillo.

It would be nice to know which dispensa caused confusion so I'll keep that in mind while they continue to be indexed.

Thank you, Armando. And that would be the dispensas indexed at

Yes, that is all you need for confirmation that José was the son of Francisco Muñoz de Nava and Leonor Ramírez de Hermosillo. There is now no doubt. Errors I have seen have been with grandparents and great grandparents. José would have known who his parents were.

By the way, the other Joseph Muñoz that was the son of Francisco Muñoz and Margarita Tiscareño married Antonia de Carrion y López de Oropesa circa 6 April 1703 based on the Información Matrimonial record that Robert Fulton indexed. In this record he uses the compound surname Muñoz de Hermosillo. They were the parents of Alexo Muñoz de Hermosillo.

Hola, Sergio.

Saludos,
Armando

The clergyman Lorenzo Carrillo Dávila is stating the names of his parents and uncle, and says that the latter founded a capellanía and named him (Lorenzo) as first capellán (chaplain). He wants to be ordained as sub-deacon in order to take over the Capellanía.

As I understand it, a capellanía was an inheritance that somehow could produce money (like a shop, a place that could be rented, etc.) and such money would be used to pay masses on behalf of the founder, and to sustain the capellán, usually a clergyman related to the founder. It was a trust and the capellán was the beneficiary.

when I was in Mexico in 2003 we went to El Limon, Jalisco since my cousins husbands family had lived there (Santana) He was looking for a marriage record for his gr-grandmother that was not online.  The priest said no and then they discovered they were cousins so he had the girl bring out the book wrapped in cellophane.. When he opened the book the pages turned to dust in front of us.. it broke our hearts.. we had him seal it up again.
We should be so grateful for the great number of records that are available to us.

HELP WITH MY RODARTE / LOPEZ LINE

I have reached a block wall with my maternal line and could really use some help.

I am attempting to find my ancestors on my Rodarte line.

Yvonne,
It seems that at least 4 children to this couple were born in Monterrey,
Nuevo Leon. Starting with Felipa, 24 May 1869; Ma. Virginia, 21 Sep 1870;
Antonio, 14 Apr 1872 and Fidencia, 8 Jan 1874 (this one from Nuevo Laredo,
Tamaulipas.) Have you looked for Sabino's & Sipriana's marriage in Nuevo
Leon or Tamaulipas?

Help with Tecolotlan, Tuxcacuesco and Autlan: Joseph de Santana and Juana Lopez-Bueso

Hello Sergio,

The two Joseph de Santana's you speak of are not the same person. The first Joseph you speak of that is married to Juana Lopes Bueso is my 9th GreatGrandfather and I have recently been working on that line. I found a death record for that Joseph that states he died in Tecolotlan on 25 November 1717 and was indeed married to Juana Lopes Bueso.
They were the parents of the 2nd Joseph de Santana you speak of that was married to Maria Gonzalez Corona. You are right he married a 2nd time with Efigenia de Zambrano in 1719 and married again in 1724 to Efigena Garcia de Alba. He died in Ejutla on 24 September 1747. I could not find a marriage record for Maria Corona, but here is a link to the marriage record with Efigenia Garcia de Alba:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18715-10103-83?cc=1874591&wc….

Also you'll find a genealogical tree in the Diocesis of Guadalajara, Marriage Dispensas that shows Joseph Santana was the son of Juana Huezo who was the daughter of Nicolas Huezo. Here is that link:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18414-37063-10?cc=1874591&wc…

I don't know about the Captain though.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Juan!

That was extremely helpful! Clearly they are not the same person, since the fisrt died in 1717 and the second was getting married in 1719 and 1724.

My only question is whether you have a document that proves that the second Joseph de Santana is the son of the first?

Thanks!

Sergio Salés

Comment

Never mind, the dispensa was sufficient, since it showed Jose de Santana as son of Juana Bueso, and thus with the last name it can be safely deduced that he was indeed the son of Joseph de Santana and Juana Lopes Bueso.

Thanks again!

HI Joseph,

Do you know where I can have access to padrones of Tlaltenango, zacatecas before 1930? Also Land ownership information?

Let me know. I really would appreciate your help.

Go to the files area of the group and under "Books and Articles" look for
"Census Records for Latin America by Lyman Platt"
(http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15262) click on the one for
Aguascalientes and Zacatecas and tilt your head 90 degrees and look for
several Tlaltenango Padrones before 1930

And from the LDS website here is a list of several Padrones before 1930:

Unfortunately these films are not online to my knowledge and you'll have to
order them to be viewed at your local family history center

With regards to land ownership records I only know of the records for the
Guadalajara dioceses but not specifically for Tlaltenango.

the record had important info but left me with some questions. gregorio's aprents were already dead before 81803, so he had his uncle(named diego)'s permission to marry agipita marquez. i wonder his uncle is the same diego flores who was married to gertrudis de la torre, and then when after his first wife died, he married phelipa enriquez.

Mexican inquisition documents on Familysearch?

Just curious, but does anyone know if there's any Mexican Inquisition documents online on Familysearch.com, or elsewhere that we can look at?

Chris,

You can usually find numerous inquisition documents on PARES, I had an aunt by the name of María Méndez de Torres who was accused of witchcraft in 1672 in Zamora, Michoacán. Her inquisition documents that mention her brother as a witness and her parents and grandparents and great grandparents. It was interesting to note that someone would actually accuse her of this, since it was well known the position they had in the cabildo and amongst society as one of the principal families of Zamora in the XVI century in the Obispado de Michoacán. One of her great grand nephews would later become the 1st or 2nd governor of Michoacán in the recent-declared republic in 1823, Telésforo Méndez de Torres.

I hope PARES will prove to be a resourceful tool for, there exist so many archives that are vital for our research, learn how to access them and study all you can, you´ll be surprised what you´ll find!

no instructions on how to use. Very frustrating.

What is the record information. the date ? a copy of the link ? what image number ?

Recording the Image Number from LDS online records, for my own records... Bad Idea ?

I have been reconcidering my practice of recording page numbers, entry number for the person (If given), and also the IMAGE NUMBER.

Comments

Comment

I have been recording image numbers on all my entries for the past year when I started my genealogy research. I have found it extremely useful whenever I needed to go back to locate and review a record. Downloading and or printing all these records just seems like an arduous task. There have been many times that I have found a record that was not in correct chronological order. Sometimes the parish records alternate dates between the main church and an auxiliary location. And of course sometimes the date recorded is inaccurate (for example Jan 2013 is recorded as Jan 2012).
Well in fact the Jalisco parish records I research were updated on Feb 25. To my surprise I noticed that my entries for marriages for Juchitlan 1860-1878 records no longer point to the correct image! Upon further inspection I discovered that they added about 50-80 images to this particular collection, which makes absolutely no sense since the new images added were for marriages from 1922. I do not yet know if any other collection records now have new image numbers. Now I am torn between updating the image numbers or just deleting them altogether. Either way, it will be a lot of work since I have almost 3,000 people in my tree. How frustrating!

David Serna

I too have found some recent changes to online files where the total number of images has been increased. I still see value in recording the image numbers.

Comment

When they started putting the microfilms online, every single image had a code number which appeared as you downloaded it. Later they got rid of it. Nevertheless, I think it is a good idea to write down both the microfilm number and the image number, even if either becomes useless in the future. Some records are relatively easy to find without image number since all the records in the series follow a chronological order. But if you have a section with 3000 images and no strict chronological order (as with some of the Dispensas), then an image number becomes a must.
Victoriano Navarro

Comment

David

I would not go so far as to say this is a bad idea, but you need to know the issues with such a citation.

The FHL is simply a repository of a copy of these records. The film number, image number are simply from their system of cataloging and presenting the record. The url of the source is simply the current electronic repository, which (1) may change as systems are updated or (2) could simply go away if the system becomes unfunded or unsupported (for the FHL this is highly unlikely).

I think the proper citation for the record (for church or civil records) should be:
author (Catholic Church or Civil Authorities)
Parish (for church only) and location
record type (baptisms, marriages, etc)
volume number or year(s) covered
page or folio number (if used)
record number if used

Along with this information, you should note the repository (FHL), their film and image number, as well as the date you extracted the information.

Family Search does provide some guidance on citing records; here are a couple of examples. Personally, I think their citations are incomplete: if you were look at the 1930 census for the Jose Lara record from a different source, how would you find this record?

From the 1930 Mexico National Census

"México, censo nacional, 1930," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M2H9-LC7 : accessed 02 Mar 2013), José Lara in entry for Luz Lara, 1930.

From the indexed (and image linked) church records

"México, Distrito Federal, registros parroquiales y diocesanos, 1514-1970," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F32V-2DK : accessed 02 Mar 2013), Alonso García and Matilde Pontones, 1924.

I think that the main thing to keep in mind is that the FHL is simply a repository of a copy of these records, and not the author.

Comment

David Serna Thank you for the guidance ... I do note the parish, book number and page no. but i have never noted the LDS film source numbers. It is always nice to have others to bounce ideas off . thanks for the help.

Comment

I have a minor disagreement with George on this issue. First, let me say that I agree completely that all of the information George lists is important, including the FHL film and image numbers; but I think the film and image numbers are extremely important for the reason that, for many of the early years, the films contain not only mixed dates, but also mixed events—that is, baptisms, marriages, confirmations, and burials may be mixed within one film number.

I have taken great pains to generate an index of the contents of the films I have accessed over the past year and a half, which has proven invaluable to me, especially when I return to a particular film again and again.

Here is one, almost comical, example of how a film can contain mixed information; it is FHL Film 280854 from Ocotlán. The FHL catalogue says that this film is "Bautismos 1610-1723 (incluye algunos matrimonios)", but this is the 'true' catalogue of this film (as accurately as I have been able to define it):

@i005: vol. 1, bautismos, 1610–1623
@i044: matrimonios, 1610—1630
@i048: bautismos, 1634
@i049: matrimonial tables (I haven't quite figured this one out yet)
@i052: bautismos y matrimonios, mixed, 1636–1639
@i055: bautismos, 1636
@i064: vol. 2, bautismos, 1639–1664
@i138: matrimonios, 1639–1664
@i169: bautismos (españoles), 1639–1664
@i180: matrimonios, 1648–1651
@i184: entierros, 1651–1655
@i188: vol. 3, bautismos, 1664–1684
@i269: casamientos, 1664–1684
@i335: casamientos y bautismos (images are upside-down), 1694–1669
@i338: vol. 4, bautismos, 1667–1694
@i377: casamientos (upside-down), 1694–1669
@i396: bautismos, 1652–1695
@i401: bautismos, 1694 (entries are mixed)
@i403: matrimonios, 1694–1723
@i406: vol. 5, bautismos, 1695–1723
@i523: matrimonios (upside-down), 1723–1694

So why do I bother to go to all this trouble to catalogue more than 220 films so far (and counting)? Because if I find a reference in FamilySearch that says that a marriage took place in, say, Ocotlán on a particular date in 1672, I know that is can be found on FHL film 280854 between images 377 and 396, and I don't have to search the entire film to locate the record. Yes, the online images may be changed or go away entirely; but I suspect the likelihood of that's happening is small, and in the meantime, my documentation points me to the specific image on the particular film, and that, after all, is the purpose of documentation—to allow others to replicate your source material directly without their having to reproduce your search.

One further comment on why I catalogue the FHL Films I use and use image numbers in my citations: some—perhaps many—of the FHL film descriptions are incorrect; for example, this is the FHL online catalogue description of FHL Film 221879 (Lagos de Moreno): "Confirmaciones 1728 -- Bautismos 1607-1640 -- Matrimonios 1638 -- Confirmaciones 1680 -- Casamientos 1605-1637 -- Confirmaciones 1634 -- ? 1612-1634 -- Defunciones, Matrimonios 1638-1634 -- Bautismos 1647-1649, 1627-1628, 1615-1620 -- Matrimonios 1612-1635 -- Defunciones 1681, 1659-1673". Well, in cataloging this film, I discovered that, between images 324 and 329, there are marriages that date from 1586! Incredibly, I found a marriage record that I needed from 1588, which I would never have found had I not had my catalogue; it is the earliest record I have found online thus far on any FHL film ...
