of his History of Totatiche which includes transcriptions of the
original land deeds by the Spanish crown and a very detailed census.

I know that Rosalinda has been in touch with him, and my parents who
are now living part-time in Mexico, have met his on a number of
ocassions. He may be someone interesting to interview. Let me know
if you are interested and we can try to get in touch with him.

Joseph,

Just an opinion from a different perspective. What I got from what
Norma Angelica Mendoza Sandoval wrote is that they are currently
struggling to launch their radio project and I really doubt that they
would relinquish the privilege of making their debut with an
unpublished material.

Maybe you can reformulate your proposal and offer them to upload their
audio tapes some time "after" they have aired them first. Make it
very clear that you would give proper credits and add a link to their
website, etc.

El Salitrillo, Zacatecas

Emilie,

The word "partido" has a lot of definitions. The one that applies here
is the following:

12. m. Distrito o territorio de una jurisdicción o administración que
tiene por cabeza un pueblo principal. (From the "Real Academia
Española" http://buscon.rae.es/diccionario/drae.htm)

You have to consider that the entry from "Diccionario Geográfico,
Histórico y Biográfico de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos." is an old one
and does not necessarily reflect current word usage. Not even the
political divisions of the states and municipalities are guaranteed to
be the same today. But being an old book and having old records is
what makes this resource valuable.

For the current political division of Zacatecas check the official web
page: http://www.zacatecas.gob.mx/ (Click "Estado" at the top menu
bar and then "Municipios" at the left side links.) Indeed Jerez is
now an autonomous "Municipio".

Regards.

otros integrantes del Grupo Ranchos con un español mucho mas pulido y

Les reto a los otros integrantes que hablan mejor español, que alcen

You wouldn't be shaming the group. . .your Spanish from my perspective
appears to be great. Okay

boy am I hoping she will but she hasn't written back yet. I just sent
off the email to her yesterday. I'm hoping she is going to take my
proposition to other decision makers in the group to consider the
proposal.

That would be great if you can connect.  I can understand
quite a bit of Spanish, but can't think on my feet fast enough to speak
it.  At least you give it a go, you are not shy.

I will try. . .if i can't get those that are fluent to help me
interview in Spanish I'll do it, but people should be forwarned it will
be like a 5 year old speaking to a grown up. let's see what happens. .
.maybe good things will come about and we can find talents bilingual
folks volunteering sometime soon.

thanks for your compliments and support. . .su abrazo recibido y otro a

So what did she say, Joseph?  Will she send you tapes or snippets of
their programming for your podcasts?  That would be great if you can
connect.  I can understand quite a bit of Spanish, but can't think on my
feet fast enough to speak it.  At least you give it a go, you are not
shy.  Nothing ventured nothing gained.  I am sure they appreciate your
efforts to speak the language, and only the really mean people there will
criticize your not having a full grasp of el Castellan.  That is why I said
that you deserve a lot of credit for what you do.  You keep coming up with
so many ways to get information for us.  I send you un abrazo fuerte.
We all help others as you told me to continue doing, but we don't all have your
talents in finding resources.

El Salitrillo, Zacatecas

Oh, thanks, Victor,

My ancestors must have been living in the Salitrillo that was in the
municipality of Tepetongo, partido de Jerez, since my father was born in
Jerez.  What is a partido?  I thought Jerez was a municipality,
no?

Help With Questions

Joseph,

How about asking if there are official Bracero Program statistics
from the early 1900s? I'm sure there must be something because every
worker was issued an ID card.

Also, I recommend anyone interested in the subject from a general
perspective to take a look at the following publication at the
University of Texas (in Spanish):

Here's a quote:

lugares como proveedoras de migrantes: Jalisco, Michoacán y
Guanajuato.
(Gamio, 1930) (ver Cuadro 1).
